Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (LBCM), Team Biotechnology and System Biology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), Bab-Ezzouar, Algiers, Algeria. Electronic address:

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a disabling tumor with poor response to chemotherapy. Here, we sought to explore a new chemotherapeutic approach based on a combined induction of cytotoxic ROS and targeting of autophagy and aerobic glycolysis as central contributors to OSCC carcinogenesis and chemoresistance. To this end, tongue OSCC was generated in BALB/c mice using 4NQO.

The epidemiological data regarding mortality rates of adults with sarcoidosis and non-ischemic cardiovascular disease (CVD) are limited. A retrospective observational analysis was conducted to identify trends and disparities related to sarcoidosis and non-ischemic cardiovascular disease mortality among the adult US population from 1999 to 2022. We used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WONDER database to extract death certificate data for the adult US population (≥25 years).

Objectives: To monitor the spread of invasive meningococcal disease due to group C of the clonal complex 10217 isolates beyond the sub-Saharan African meningitis belt.

Methods: Cases were confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction in blood or cerebrospinal fluid samples and further characterized by multi-locus sequence typing that defined sequence type and clonal complexes. Sequencing of gene (encoding the penicillin-binding protein 2) was also used to predict susceptibility to β-lactams.

Introduction: Effective medication adherence, is a real global challenge that emerges as a pivotal factor influencing asthma control, exacerbation frequency, hospitalization rates and ultimately, mortality, morbidity and health care costs. In light of this, our study aimed to assess therapeutic adherence levels among asthmatic patients and identify factors contributing to non-adherence.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional multicenter study, among asthmatic patients receiving outpatient or inpatient care across seven asthma centers located in two Algerian cities: Algiers (University Hospital Center of Benimessous, University Hospital Center of Bab el oued,EPSP of Zeralda, EPSP of Beraki and EPSP of Rouiba) and Constantine (Constantine University Hospital Center (CHU), EPSP of Constantine), between July and December 2023.

The exchange of medical images and patient data over the internet has attracted considerable attention in the past decade, driven by advancements in communication and health services. However, transferring confidential data through insecure channels, such as the internet, exposes it to potential manipulations and attacks. To ensure the authenticity of medical images while concealing patient data within them, this paper introduces a high-capacity and reversible fragile watermarking model in which an authentication watermark is initially generated from the cover image and merged with the patient's information, photo, and medical report to form the global watermark.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how men and women do after a heart procedure called TAVI, which helps with a problem called aortic stenosis.
  • It found that women faced more serious complications right after the procedure, like higher chances of dying and having strokes, compared to men.
  • However, men had a higher chance of needing to go back to the hospital within 30 and 90 days after the procedure, but both men and women got better faster from 2016 to 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • Snakebite envenoming (SBE) is a major public health problem in tropical areas, especially Africa, where it causes a high number of fatalities and serious health issues due to ineffective antivenom treatments.
  • This study focuses on developing nanobodies as a new type of treatment against cobra venoms, investigating toxic venom fractions and their interaction with acetylcholine receptors.
  • The research identified two particularly deadly venom fractions, F5 and F6, and demonstrated that combining specific nanobodies could neutralize these venoms effectively in mice, revealing the complex nature of cobra venom's lethal effects.

  • Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) primarily affects postmenopausal females, but recent data show that men have worse outcomes, especially with cardiogenic shock (TTC-CS).
  • In a study analyzing hospitalizations for TTC-CS, 74.1% of cases were female, yet male patients had higher mortality rates and complications such as cardiac arrest and acute kidney injury.
  • Despite males experiencing higher hospitalization costs and longer stays, there were no significant differences in readmission rates over 30, 90, and 180 days, suggesting stable mortality with declining use of certain treatments.

Introduction: Recent studies have demonstrated the growing interest in cardiovascular risk in Crohn's disease (CD), the aim of our work is to highlight the need for research into the frequency of arterial stiffness (AS) and its link with certain associated factors, particularly those related to inflammation.

Materials And Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study involving 118 patients with CD. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) measured by applanation tonometry was the criterion for calculating AS, the study also investigated the association of AS especially the indicators of inflammation, as well as the impact of anti-TNF alpha therapy on AS.

  • Prophages significantly influence the characteristics of pathogenic bacteria, yet their ecological and evolutionary roles, particularly in bacteria linked to gastric cancer, are not well understood.
  • A comprehensive analysis of 1,011 complete clinical genomes revealed that 29.5% contain prophages, with only 32.2% being complete, and their distribution varies by geography and ancestry but not by the disease status of hosts.
  • The study uncovered mechanisms of prophage inactivation and proposed a new model for regulating the lysogenic-lytic cycle, providing a deeper understanding of how prophages impact bacterial genetics and adaptation.
