The stingless bee Frieseomelitta varia Lepeletier 1836 (Hymenoptera: Apidae) is an essential pollinator in natural and agricultural ecosystems in the Neotropical region. However, these bees may be exposed to pesticides during foraging, which can affect both individuals and their colonies. One example comes from the use of pyraclostrobin (a fungicide) and thiamethoxam (an insecticide) for pest control in pepper crops, which F.

Glyphosate is the most commercialized herbicide in Brazil and worldwide, and this has become a worrying scenario in recent years. In 2015 glyphosate was classified as potentially carcinogenic by the World Health Organization, which opened avenues for numerous debates about its safe use regarding non-target species' health, including humans. This review aimed to observe the impacts of glyphosate and its formulations on the gut microbiota, as well as on the gut microstructure and animal metabolism.

Background: Movement behaviours, such as sedentary behavior (SB) and physical inactivity, have become a public health issue due to their implications for physical and mental health. The literature indicates that the university environment influences the movement behaviors of university students, and the strategies adopted during the pandemic may have favored a decrease in the practice of physical activity and an increase in the time dedicated to SB in this population. We aimed to evaluate the association of SB and moderate to vigorous leisure-time physical activity (MVPA) with presence of symptoms of mental disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a significant contributor to cancer-related deaths globally. Systemic therapy is the only treatment option for HCC at an advanced stage, with limited therapeutic response. In this study, we evaluated the antitumor potential of four N-acylhydrazone (NAH) derivatives, namely LASSBio-1909, 1911, 1935, and 1936, on HCC cell lines.

Molecular hybridization between structural fragments from the structures of curcumin (1) and resveratrol (2) was used as a designing tool to generate a new N-acyl-cinnamoyl-hydrazone hybrid molecular architecture. Twenty-eight new compounds were synthesized and evaluated for multifunctional activities related to Parkinson's disease (PD), including neuroprotection, antioxidant, metal chelating ability, and Keap1/Nrf2 pathway activation. Compounds 3b (PQM-161) and 3e (PQM-164) were highlighted for their significant antioxidant profile, acting directly as induced free radical stabilizers by DPPH and indirectly by modulating intracellular inhibition of t-BOOH-induced ROS formation in neuronal cells.

Laboratory of Toxicants and Drugs Analysis - LATF, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Federal University of Alfenas - Unifal-MG, Gabriel Monteiro da Silva St. 700, 37130-000, Alfenas, MG, Brazil. Electronic address:

Methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP) are among the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics, drugs, and foods. These compounds have been associated with toxic effects due to the overuse of products with parabens in their formulation. The toxicity of parabens may be correlated to endocrine disruption, owing to their ability to mimic the actions of estradiol.

Mercury is a naturally occurring metal found in various inorganic and organic forms within the environment. Due to its high toxicity, there is global concern regarding human exposure to this element. The combination of high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) is commonly used to analyze the different forms of mercury in a sample due to its high sensitivity and ability to selectively detect mercury.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers utilized a ligand-fishing technique with immobilized 3CL protease on magnetic beads, which allowed them to identify and isolate active peptides that further enhanced inhibition to 82.7%.
  • * Molecular simulations and additional testing revealed that four out of seven identified peptides were effective at inhibiting the 3CL protease, indicating the potential of these seaweed-derived peptides as antiviral agents against COVID-19.

Introduction: An event of increasing interest during host-pathogen interactions is the polarization of patrolling/naive monocytes (MOs) into macrophage subsets (MФs). Therapeutic strategies aimed at modulating this event are under investigation.

Methods: This review focuses on the mechanisms of induction/development and profile of MФs polarized toward classically proinflammatory (M1) or alternatively anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotypes in response to bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.

Classical scoring functions may exhibit low accuracy in determining ligand binding affinity for proteins. The availability of both protein-ligand structures and affinity data make it possible to develop machine-learning models focused on specific protein systems with superior predictive performance. Here, we report a new methodology named SAnDReS that combines AutoDock Vina 1.

The Croton genus (Euphorbiaceae) is recognized as a promising source for identifying bioactive compounds with antiproliferative activity. However, knowledge on the chemical composition and activity of Croton floribundus, Croton echinocarpus, and Croton zehntneri is limited. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the antiproliferative activity of these species on cells derived from tumoral breast, lung, and melanoma cells, and primary fibroblasts derived from human skin.

Metamizole, as known as dipyrone or novaminsulfone is widely used, especially in Latin America, for its analgesic and antipyretic function. However, several countries have banned it due to the risk of agranulocytosis, skin necrosis, and other serious adverse effects. To assess the safety of metamizole compared to other commonly used non-opioid analgesics (paracetamol, ibuprofen, and acetylsalicylic acid).

Daily agro-industrial waste, primarily cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose, poses a significant environmental challenge. Harnessing lignocellulolytic enzymes, particularly endo-1,4-β-xylanases, for efficient saccharification is a cost-effective strategy, transforming biomass into high-value products. This study focuses on the cloning, expression, site-directed mutagenesis, purification, three-dimensional modeling, and characterization of the recombinant endo-1,4-β-xylanase (XlnA) from in .

Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Federal University of Alfenas UNIFAL-MG, Rua Gabriel Monteiro da Silva, 700, Centro, Alfenas, MG, 37130-001, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • - Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a serious fungal infection that requires long-term antifungal treatment; this study explored low-level LASER therapy (LLLT) as a potential complementary treatment to enhance recovery.
  • - The research involved infecting mice with P. brasiliensis and applying LLLT on alternate days, which resulted in a reduction of cell influx at the infection site while increasing the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines that help fight the fungus.
  • - The findings indicated that LLLT improved healing by decreasing the number of viable fungi and increasing fibrocytes, suggesting that it may benefit PCM patients as an additional treatment option.
