Chronic endometritis (CE) is a persistent inflammatory condition of the endometrium characterized by abnormal infiltration of plasma cells into the endometrial stroma. Frequently associated with repeated implantation failure, recurrent pregnancy loss, and infertility, CE significantly impacts women's health, contributing to conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding and endometriosis. Treatment typically involves antibiotic therapy; however, the efficacy of these treatments is increasingly compromised by the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Crimes without a body: reflections on a case series of online crimes.

Forensic Sci Res

December 2023

Section of Clinical Criminology and Forensic Psychiatry, Interdisciplinary Department of Medicine, University of Aldo Moro, Bari, Italy.

There is a large volume of online crimes. The aim of this work is to reflect on virtual crimes that are apparently different but actually have commonalities. In these cases, the corporeal sphere that mediates interpersonal relationships is absent, and perceptions of the real world and emotional regulation may be altered, which poses the risk of destructive behaviours.

Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Department of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and Ionian Area - (DiMePRe-J), University of "Aldo Moro", University of Bari "Aldo Moro", Piazza Giulio Cesare N. 11 Cap 70124, Bari, Italy.

Background: Clinical evidence suggests that pregnant women are more vulnerable to COVID-19, since they are at increased risk for disease progression and for obstetric complications, such as premature labor, miscarriage, preeclampsia, cesarean delivery, fetal growth restriction and perinatal death. Despite this evidence, pregnant women are often excluded from clinical trials, resulting in limited knowledge on COVID-19 management. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to provide better evidence on the efficacy and safety of available COVID-19 treatment in pregnant women.

Recent advances in anticancer treatment have significantly improved the survival rate of young females; unfortunately, in about one third of cancer survivors the risk of ovarian insufficiency and infertility is still quite relevant. As the possibility of becoming a mother after recovery from a juvenile cancer is an important part of the quality of life, several procedures to preserve fertility have been developed: ovarian surgical transposition, induction of ovarian quiescence by gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH-a) treatment, and oocyte and/or ovarian cortical tissue cryopreservation. Ovarian tissue cryostorage and allografting is a valuable technique that applies even to prepubertal girls; however, some patients cannot benefit from it due to the high risk of reintroducing cancer cells during allograft in cases of ovary-metastasizing neoplasias, such as leukemias or NH lymphomas.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol X

September 2023

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, ASTT LECCO, Alessandro Manzoni Hospital, Dell'Eremo Street 11, Lecco, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Uterine arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are a rare, high-risk cause of uterine bleeding that can be difficult to diagnose through ultrasound.
  • Two cases during the postpartum period showed episodes of bright red blood loss linked to AVMs, which were confirmed via imaging techniques like transvaginal ultrasound and angiography.
  • There are currently no established guidelines for managing AVMs, but the cases discussed opted for a conservative treatment approach to preserve the patients' fertility, aiming to contribute to the limited existing literature on the topic.

Norovirus (NoV) is regarded as a common cause of acute gastrointestinal illness worldwide in all age groups, with substantial morbidity across health care and community settings. The lack of in vitro cell culture systems for human NoV has prompted the use of cultivatable caliciviruses (such as feline calicivirus, FCV, or murine NoV) as surrogates for in vitro evaluation of antivirals. Essential oils (EOs) may represent a valid tool to counteract viral infections, particularly as food preservatives.

The Role of Hormonal Replacement Therapy in BRCA Mutated Patients: Lights and Shadows.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2023

Oncology Unit IRCSS Istituto Tumori "Giovanni Paolo II", Department of Interdisciplinary Medicine (DIM), University of Bari "Aldo Moro", 70124 Bari, Italy.

All cancers develop as a result of mutations in genes. DNA damage induces genomic instability and subsequently increases susceptibility to tumorigenesis. Women who carry mutations of BRCA 1 and BRCA2 genes have an augmented risk of breast and ovarian cancer and a markedly augmented probability of dying because of cancer compared to the general population.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) causes upper respiratory tract disease (URTD) and sporadic outbreaks of virulent systemic disease (FCV-VSD). The basis for the increased pathogenicity of FCV-VSD viruses is incompletely understood, and antivirals for FCV-VSD have yet to be developed. We investigated the clinicoepidemiology and viral features of three FCV-VSD outbreaks in Australia and evaluated the in vitro efficacy of nitazoxanide (NTZ), 2'-C-methylcytidine (2CMC) and NITD-008 against FCV-VSD viruses.
