Severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sBPD) requiring invasive mechanical ventilation is a heterogeneous disease process that contributes to morbidity and mortality in infants. As the most common lung disease of prematurity, sBPD has a multitude of overlapping cardiac, airway, pulmonary vascular, and infectious phenotypic presentations that progress through four different phases of care. Premature infants with sBPD are at a high risk of acute decompensation and subsequent cardiopulmonary arrest.

Introduction: Postpartum anaemia is often caused by iron deficiency with onset during the antepartum period and can be exacerbated by excessive blood loss at birth. Its prevalence is estimated as 50-80% in low-income and middle-income countries. It poses adverse consequences on the mother and negatively impacts her ability to care for her newborn.

Background: A range of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) MRI protocols are used in clinical practice but not all were specifically designed for diagnostic ascertainment. This can be confusing and no standard diagnostic SIJ MRI protocol is currently accepted worldwide.
Objective: To develop a standardised MRI image acquisition protocol (IAP) for diagnostic ascertainment of sacroiliitis.

This "Best Practices in User Consultation" article is the result of a 2022 International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) membership survey that collected valuable insights from the shared research laboratory (SRL) community and of a group discussion at the CYTO 2022 workshop of the same name. One key takeaway is the importance of initiating a consultation at the outset of a flow cytometry project, particularly for trainees. This approach enables the improvement and standardization of every step, from planning experiments to interpreting data.

Introduction: We describe female authorship trends in gastroenterology (GI) randomized controlled trial literature as a novel focus on gender bias in academic GI.
Methods: Using a systematic PubMed search, we extracted GI randomized controlled trial reports published from 2011 to 2022. We describe time trends in proportions of females among first and last authors overall and within GI subspecialties and high-impact journals.

Introduction: Infectious complications following regional anesthesia (RA) while rare, can be devastating. The objective of this review was to estimate the risk of infectious complications following central neuraxial blocks (CNB) such as epidural anesthesia (EA), spinal anesthesia (SA) and combined spinal epidural (CSE), and peripheral nerve blocks (PNB).
Materials And Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases to identify reference studies reporting infectious complications in the context of RA subtypes.

Introduction: Metformin is a first-line antihyperglycaemic agent for type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In addition to glycaemic control, it offers benefits related to cardiovascular health, weight neutrality and metabolic syndrome. However, its benefits in kidney transplant recipients remain unclear as metformin use is controversial in this population due to a lack of evidence and there are recommendations against its use in patients with poor kidney function.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose deaths are a public health crisis. One contributing factor is stigma towards people who use opioids. We developed and conducted a public-facing, half-day educational event designed to challenge misperceptions about OUD from a contemporary neuroscience perspective.

Background: The Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC) developers have created web-based calibration modules for the SPARCC MRI sacroiliac joint (SIJ) scoring methods. We aimed to test the impact of applying these e-modules on the feasibility and reliability of these methods.
Methods: The SPARCC-SIJ e-modules contain cases with baseline and follow-up scans and an online scoring interface.

While breastfeeding has long been an important, globally recognized aspect of population health, disparities exist across Canada. The Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) is a WHO/UNICEF best-practice program that helps ensure families receive evidence-based perinatal care and is associated with improved breastfeeding rates. However, <10% of hospitals in Canada are designated as 'Baby-Friendly'.

Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an intervention used in critically ill patients with severe cardiopulmonary failure that is expensive and resource intensive and requires specialised care. There remains a significant practice variation in its application. This systematic review will assess the evidence for key performance indicators (KPIs) in ECMO.

Objective: To estimate the impact on clinical outcomes and healthcare resource use from recommending that patients with 1-2 low-risk adenomas (LRAs) return to routine fecal immunochemical test (FIT) screening instead of surveillance colonoscopy, from a Canadian provincial healthcare system perspective.
Methods: The OncoSim-Colorectal microsimulation model simulated average-risk individuals eligible for FIT-based colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in Alberta, Canada. We simulated two surveillance strategies that applied to individuals with 1-2 LRAs (<10 mm) removed as part of the average risk CRC screening program: (a) Surveillance colonoscopy (status quo) and (b) return to FIT screening (new strategy); both at 5 years after polypectomy.

Objectives: Diabetes and obesity care for ethnocultural migrant communities is hampered by a lack of understanding of premigration and postmigration stressors and their impact on social and clinical determinants of health within unique cultural contexts. We sought to understand the role of cultural brokering in primary healthcare to enhance chronic disease care for ethnocultural migrant communities.
Design And Setting: Participatory qualitative descriptive-interpretive study with the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative in a Canadian urban centre.

Cachexia is a major cause of death in cancer and leads to wasting of cardiac and skeletal muscle, as well as adipose tissue. Various cellular and soluble mediators have been postulated in driving cachexia; however, the specific mechanisms behind this muscle wasting remain poorly understood. In this study, we found polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells (PMN-MDSCs) to be critical for the development of cancer-associated cachexia.
