Objective: Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) is a transcriptional factor that activates multiple genes including Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) in response to hypoxia and promotes neoangiogenesis.
Methods: Expression of HIF-1alpha VEGF, and GLUT-1 were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and microvessel density (MVD) was determined by CD 34 immunostaining in 100 endometrioid type endometrial adenocarcinoma, FIGO Stages I-IV.
Results: High expression of HIF-1alpha, VEGF and GLUT-1 were significantly more prevalent in advanced stages than early stages (p<0.

Pulmonary extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare manifestation of myelofibrosis. We encountered a unique case of pulmonary extramedullary hematopoiesis occurring in a 59-year-old white man, where in addition to the typical foci of interstitial hematopoietic cells, a surgical lung biopsy showed airspace and arterial wall involvement. Airspace foci were associated with acute and organizing alveolar hemorrhage, while within arteries the hematopoietic elements had a striking predilection for the vascular intima.

Aim: Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) reduce arrhythmic mortality in a wide range of patients with poor left ventricular (LV) function. However, whether ICD therapy is equally effective in younger and older patients remains uncertain. To address this question, we compared ICD-documented ventricular tachyarrhythmia burden in patients < 75 years of age (Group 1) and >or= 75 years of age (Group 2).

In this study, clinical, parasitological, macroscopical, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations were performed on 19 kids and 11 lambs (30 animals) with neonatal diarrhoea to detect the presence of Coronavirus, Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia intestinalis. Clinically, severe dehydration, yellowish-green to brown coloured diarrhoea and death were observed. Mortality rates were 10-30% in the examined flocks.

The presence of surface-active material in the lung alveolus has been known for several decades as being essential for normal lung function. Surfactant is essential for reducing the surface tension at the alveolar air-liquid interface. Pulmonary surfactant is composed of 90% lipids and 10% proteins.

The presence of surface-active material in the lung alveolus has been known for several decades as being essential for normal lung function. The host defense and controlling inflammatory processes of the lung are the major functions of SP-A and SP-D. SP-A and SP-D were originally demonstrated in alveolar type II cells, but recent studies have shown extrapulmonary expression of SP-A and SP-D indicating systemic roles of these proteins.

Background: Experimental models of traumatic brain injury (TBI), using a variety of techniques and species, have been devised with the aim of producing repeatable lesions resembling those found in head injuries. There are various TBI models mentioned in the literature. In experimental head trauma models, emphasis has been placed on the severe head injuries.

Aim: To determine the concentrations of surfactant protein (SP)-A and SP-D in synovial fluid samples from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and healthy controls and correlate them with rheumatoid factor, C-reactive protein (CRP), immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgM, and IgG, total protein, and total lipid content.
Methods: The concentrations of SP-A, SP-D, CRP, IgA, IgM, IgG, and rheumatoid factor were measured in the synovial fluid of 7 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 3 samples of healthy synovial fluid obtained at autopsy. The bands obtained by specific antibodies in Western blotting to determine the surfactant protein concentration were analyzed densitometrically and synovial fluid total phospholipids and protein content were analyzed spectrophotometrically.

Decompressive surgery or craniectomy (DC) is a treatment option, which should be considered when the intracranial pressure (ICP) cannot be treated by conservative methods. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the benefits of decompressive craniectomy in patients with intractable posttraumatic intracranial hypertension and to evaluate the patient selection criteria for this management protocol. In this study, 100 patients with severe head injuries were involved.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of environmental light-dark changes on the outcome of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) using an experimental rodent model. The functions of endogenous and exogenous melatonin on the outcome of injury were also investigated
Methods: Mild traumatic brain injury was experimentally induced in 56 male Sprague-Dawley rats using a weight-drop device. Animals were divided into four groups of 14 each as follows: (i) sham-operated (trauma only, normal day-night cycle), (ii) treated with melatonin (trauma+melatonin, normal day-night cycle), (iii) darkness-induced (trauma+48 h constant dark), and (iv) treated with melatonin and darkness-induced (trauma+48 h constant dark+melatonin).

Twelve sheep from 7 different flocks consisting of approximately 150-250 animals each were diagnosed with coenurosis caused by the larval stage of Taenia multiceps. Ataxia, incoordination, drowsiness, hind leg paralysis and coma were the most prominent clinical symptoms. Monocytosis and lymphocytosis were observed upon hematological examination.

Early human trophoblast shows dramatic invasive properties during early pregnancy. A tightly-regulated activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is considered to be of critical importance for the control of trophoblast invasion. The aim of the present study was to determine MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 protein expression in decidual endometrium during the first trimester of pregnancy (22-42 days post coitus) with special attention to their expression patterns in endometrial compartments.
