Background: The specific objectives of this study are to identify the carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) type based on computerized tomography angiography (CTA) results, determine the cut-off diameter of the superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) and internal jugular vein (IJV) in CCF patients, and to evaluate the correlation between diameters of the right and left SOV and IJV with CCF type and location.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of data from 35 CCF patients at our institution was conducted between January 2016 and October 2022. The analysis separated the vascular diameters of the right and left SOV and IJV, which were compared to 35 non-CCF patients.

Background: Diagnosis for HIV in infants is hard to determine, particularly in limited-resource areas. A delay in the diagnosis of HIV-infected infants will lead to high morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this project is to construct a model of an HIV-positive infant and develop a useful and practical scoring system to estimate the likelihood of mother-to-child transmission that can be applied in the field.

Background Malaysia has been one of the most prominent destination countries for medical tourism. The industry received significant government support to create a conducive environment for its growth, such as the provision of an investment tax allowance for the facilities participating in medical tourism and the establishment of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) to coordinate collaboration between various industry stakeholders to promote medical tourism activities at the international level and facilitate inbound medical tourists. The establishment of the MHTC facilitates collaboration between various industry stakeholders.

Background: Recent evidence suggests an elevated risk of cognitive impairment and dementia in individuals with atrial fibrillation (AF), irrespective of stroke occurrence. AF, known to reduce brain perfusion, particularly through silent cerebral ischemia, underscores the intricate relationship between cardiac and cerebral health. The heart plays a crucial role in supporting normal brain function, and rhythm control, a standard AF treatment, has demonstrated enhancements in brain perfusion.

When a tooth is diseased or damaged through caries, bioactive molecules are liberated from the pulp and dentin as part of the natural response to injury and these are key molecules for stimulating stem cell responses for tissue repair. Incorporation of these extracellular-matrix (ECM)-derived molecules into a hydrogel model can mimic in vivo conditions to enable dentin-pulp complex regeneration. Here, a chitosan/alginate (C/A) hydrogel is developed to sequester bovine ECM extracts.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effectiveness of a mobile technology-supported health intervention in reducing all-cause mortality in rural Indonesia, where cardiovascular disease is a significant concern.
  • - Data from over 22,000 participants were collected over five years, showing that those in intervention villages had an 18% lower risk of death compared to those receiving usual care.
  • - Findings suggest that this type of intervention could enhance survival rates, particularly in upper-middle-income countries, while highlighting education and marital status as factors influencing mortality risk.

The intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is the most frequently used method of reversible contraception with high efficacy. Despite these benefits, rare complications, such as spontaneous migration of the device into adjacent organs, particularly the bladder, are possible. Minimally invasive surgery is a safe and effective procedure with few complications for the management of migrated IUCDs.

Prognostic evaluation of quick sequential organ failure assessment score in ICU patients with sepsis across different income settings.

Crit Care

January 2024

Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, National University Hospital, National University Health System, Singapore, Singapore.

Background: There is conflicting evidence on association between quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) and sepsis mortality in ICU patients. The primary aim of this study was to determine the association between qSOFA and 28-day mortality in ICU patients admitted for sepsis. Association of qSOFA with early (3-day), medium (28-day), late (90-day) mortality was assessed in low and lower middle income (LLMIC), upper middle income (UMIC) and high income (HIC) countries/regions.

Synthesis, density functional theory and kinetic studies of aminopyridine based α-glucosidase inhibitors.

Future Med Chem

October 2023

H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi, Karachi, 75270, Pakistan.

The current study aimed to develop new thiourea derivatives as potential α-glucosidase inhibitors for the management of hyperglycemia in patients of Type 2 diabetes, with a focus on identifying safer and more effective antidiabetic agents. New thiourea derivatives () were synthesized through single-step chemical transformation and evaluated for α-glucosidase inhibition. Kinetic studies identified the mode of inhibition, free energy and type of interactions were analyzed through density functional theory and molecular docking.

Background And Aim: Metabolic syndrome is present in 7% of adolescents and 19 to 35% in obese adolescents, and the cause of this condition has not been fully understood. Early identification of the risk involved could be an initial step in preventing a metabolic syndrome. Increased waist circumference, which is a parameter of central obesity, is also risk factor for this condition.

Background: Despite the plausibility that diabetes may increase the risk of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) due to various diabetes related complications and co-morbidity, findings from epidemiological studies on the relationship between diabetes and MVCs remained inclusive mainly due to heterogeneity in the study design and failure to complete consideration of potential confounders. This study re-visited this putative association with an improved study design.

Method: This study employed a controlled before-after study design and included 1,264,280 people aged 18-75 years with T2D newly diagnosed from 2009-2014 and an equal number of age-, sex-, and time-matched controls.

Objective: In 2019, we highlighted the disparities in scientific production between high-income countries (HICs) and low- to middle-income countries (LMICs) by emphasizing how scientific research was underrepresented in the latter. The present study aimed to investigate research productivity in neurosurgery of low-income countries (LICs) and LMICs for the years 2018-2020 and to compare it with the results of our previous study for 2015-2017.

Methods: We performed a retrospective bibliometric analysis using PubMed and Scopus databases to record all the reports published in 2018-2020 by investigators affiliated with neurosurgical departments in LICs and LMICs.
