Background: The local infectious origin and the putative role of Cutibacterium acnes (CA) of a particular subtype of discopathy (Modic 1) are still debated.
Purpose: To establish the association of CA in intervertebral disc (IVD) and Modic 1 discopathy in patients with low back pain.
Methods: The prevalence of bacteria in IVD samples obtained by anterior approach in patient with chronic low back pain harboring Modic type 1, 2 or no Modic changes was compared to that measured in IVD samples obtained by posterior approach for sciatica.

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major bacterial pathogen responsible for hospital-acquired infections. Although its epidemiology is considered as non-clonal, certain international high-risk multidrug-resistant clones have been recognized.
Aim: From the first report of an intra-hospital outbreak due to an SHV2a-producing P.

The aim of this study was to provide contemporary data on chronic total occlusion (CTO) prevalence and management in a large unselected population representing the daily activity of cathlabs, in the greater Paris area, and to compare percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) features in patients with and without CTO. Procedures were collected from the CARDIO-ARSIF (Agence Régionale de Santé Ile de France) registry from 2012 to 2015. Patients with acute coronary syndrome or previous coronary artery bypass grafting were excluded.

Background: Therapeutic strategies for electrical storm (ES) in patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) are not well defined.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the acute and long-term results of ventricular tachycardia (VT) radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) as a treatment of ES in patients with ARVC.
Methods: This multicenter study retrospectively enrolled 23 consecutive patients with ARVC (mean age 43.

Predictors of early and late failure of pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis (CP) have not been established. Early and late outcomes of a cumulative series of 81 (mean age 60 years; mean EuroSCORE II, 3.3%) consecutive patients from three European cardiac surgery centers were reviewed.

A nationwide, multicenter retrospective survey was conducted to assess both, the real-life incidence of grade 3/4 ICI-induced colitis treated with anti-TNFα, in patients with advanced melanoma, and the consequence of this therapeutic strategy on disease outcome. All patients with advanced melanoma treated with anti-TNFα agents for severe ICI-related colitis in the participating centers were included.

Introduction: Frequent premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) can lead to symptoms, such as cardiomyopathy and increased mortality. Beta-blockers are recommended as first-line therapy to reduce PVC burden; however, the response is unpredictable. The objective of this study is to determine whether PVC diurnal-variability patterns are associated with different clinical profiles and predict drug response.

Background: Currently, few studies investigated the economic burden of atopic dermatitis (AD) in adult patients and specifically the estimation of out-of-pocket costs. Patients with skin disorders primarily use comfort care to ease dryness, itch or pain, and the costs of comfort care are not subject to any reimbursement from mandatory or complementary insurance.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to measure the medical and non-medical expenses paid by the patient.

The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is higher in myeloma patients receiving immunomodulatory compounds. A VTE prophylaxis using low-molecular-weight heparin or aspirin is therefore proposed. Apixaban is an oral direct anti-Xa.

Background: An increased risk of thrombosis has been reported in immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), but the characteristics, risk factors of occurrence, recurrence and management of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) have been poorly investigated.
Aims: To describe VTE and ITP characteristics, distribution of VTE risk factors and their impact on VTE features and recurrence.
Methods: A retrospective study of patients with ITP and VTE registered in databases of three reference French centres of ITP.

Splenectomy in addition to immunotherapy with rituximab can provide quick and sometimes durable disease control in patients with splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL). However, systemic chemotherapy is ultimately required in many cases. The BRISMA (Bendamustine-rituximab as first-line treatment of splenic marginal zone lymphoma)/IELSG (International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group)36 trial is an open-label, single arm phase II study designed by the IELSG in cooperation with the Fondazione Italiana Linfomi and the lymphoma Study Association according to Simon's two-stage method.

Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKD) is the most common enzyme defect of glycolysis and an important cause of hereditary, nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. The disease has a worldwide geographical distribution but there are no verified data regarding its frequency. Difficulties in the diagnostic workflow and interpretation of PK enzyme assay likely play a role.

Background: Transfusion-transmitted bacterial infections (TTBIs) are the main residual infectious complications of transfusions. Escherichia coli and platelet (PLT) concentrates may be epidemiologically associated, leading to severe, if not lethal, TTBIs. We investigated the genotypic and phenotypic reasons for this clinically deleterious combination.

Aims: Recent studies have shown that in more than half of apparently unexplained sudden cardiac arrests (SCA), a specific aetiology can be unmasked by a careful evaluation. The characteristics and the extent to which such cases undergo a systematic thorough investigation in real-life practice are unknown.
Methods And Results: Data were analysed from an ongoing study, collecting all cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Paris area.

A 59-year-old woman presented with progressive paresthesias of all of her limbs for 4 years, associated with neuropathic pain, tingling in the tongue and allodynia, consistent with small fiber neuropathy (SFN). Several systemic symptoms and signs were found on clinical examination and laboratory work-up. Neurological investigations including neurophysiologic test and skin biopsy supported the diagnosis of SFN.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of pacemaker mode programming on clinical outcomes in patients with high-degree atrioventricular conduction disturbance (AVCD) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Background: Although high-degree AVCD after TAVI can receive pacemaker, recovery of the AVCD is often observed. Specific pacemaker algorithms (AAI-DDD mode switch) are available which favor spontaneous atrioventricular conduction.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (Sm) is an archetypal environmental opportunistic bacterium responsible for health care-associated infections. The role of animals in human Sm infections is unknown. This study aims to reveal the genetic and phylogenetic relationships between pathogenic strains of Sm, both animal and human, and identify a putative role for animals as a reservoir in human infection.

Transthyretin familial amyloid polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) is a progressive, fatal, inherited disorder first identified in Portugal and now recognized in all continents. Over the past decade, thanks to the availability of the genetic test, our knowledge on the range of clinical expressions of this disorder has expanded, including different patterns and progression rates of the neuropathy, as well as aspects of the cardiomyopathy, which can be prominent. In the mean time, new tools are being developed to detect earlier TTR amyloid deposition such as cardiac scintigraphy with technetium-labelled pyrophosphate tracers or small nerve fiber alterations from skin biopsies, or using neurophysiological approaches as well as magnetic resonance neurography (MRN).

The Rapid Polymyxin NP test has been recently developed to rapidly detect polymyxin resistance in Enterobacteriaceae. Here we evaluated this test for detecting MCR-1/MCR-2-producing Enterobacteriaceae using a collection of 70 non-redundant strains either recovered from the environment, animals, or humans. Sensitivity and specificity were found to be 100%.
