The multiparametric molecular cell and tissue analysis in vitro and in vivo is characterized by rapid progress in the field of image generation technologies, sensor biotechnology, and computational modeling. Fascinating new potentials in unraveling the detailed functions of single cells, organs, and whole organisms are presently emerging and permit the close monitoring i.e.

Purpose: To analyse hepcidin serum and urine levels during radiotherapy for prostate cancer.
Methods: In 18 patients undergoing radiotherapy for prostate cancer, blood, plasma, and urine samples were taken before and during radiotherapy. Complete blood cell count, pro-hepcidin-, ferritin-, transferrin-, IL-1beta-, IL-6-, and TNF-alpha concentration was determined.

Purpose: To prospectively analyze hepcidin, hemojuvelin, and ferroportin-1 expression after x-irradiation of rat liver and isolated rat hepatocytes.
Materials And Methods: The treatment of the rats and this study were approved by the local committee and the public authority on animal welfare. Rat livers in vivo and isolated rat hepatocytes in vitro were irradiated.

We describe a patient who experienced a fatal ipsilateral basal ganglia hemorrhage within an hour after carotid angioplasty and stent placement. In the few similar cases published there were no prodromata, but hyperacute onset of severe neurologic deterioration corresponding to intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Our findings suggest that besides the delayed ICH that is associated with hyperperfusion syndrome (HPS), a second type of hyperacute and usually fatal ICH exists that resembles hypertensive hemorrhage.

Purpose: The transplantation of donor hepatocytes is considered a promising option to correct chronic liver failure through repopulation of the diseased organ. This study describes a novel selective external-beam irradiation technique as a preparative regimen for hepatocyte transplantation.
Methods And Materials: Livers of dipeptidylpeptidase IV (DPPIV)-deficient rats were preconditioned with external-beam single-dose irradiation (25 Gy) delivered to two thirds of the liver.

Background: The visual combination of different modalities is essential for many medical imaging applications in the field of Computer-Assisted medical Diagnosis (CAD) to enhance the clinical information content. Clinically, incontinence is a diagnosis with high clinical prevalence and morbidity rate. The search for a method to identify risk patients and to control the success of operations is still a challenging task.

Background: Finite element method (FEM) analysis for intraoperative modeling of the left ventricle (LV) is presently not possible. Since 3D structural data of the LV is now obtainable using standard transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) devices intraoperatively, the present study describes a method to transfer this data into a commercially available FEM analysis system: ABAQUS.
Methods: In this prospective study TomTec LV Analysis TEE Software was used for semi-automatic endocardial border detection, reconstruction, and volume-rendering of the clinical 3D echocardiographic data.

We here report on a case of a blastic tumor, recently described to belong to a new entity sharing phenotypic similarities with blood derived plasmocytoid dendritic cells and formerly regarded as belonging to the group of natural killer cell lymphomas. Besides immunophenotypic characteristics such as the absence of T- cell markers and almost complete absence of markers of the myeloid lineage, these tumors express CD4, CD56 and CD123, the receptor for interleukin-3. Moreover, using the comparative genomic hybridisation technique, CGH, we demonstrate a gain of chromosome 7q, 22 and a loss of chromosome 3p and 13q.

Familial dyskeratotic comedones is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis, which presents with disseminated keratotic papules and comedo-like lesions. The disease usually manifests in childhood. The histology of the lesions is characterized by a crater-like invagination of the epidermis filled with parakeratotic keratin.

Chromosomal translocations affecting the IGH locus and various oncogene loci are recurrent in many types of systemic B-cell lymphomas. Hardly any data exist, however, on such translocations in primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas (PCBCL). Here, a series of 29 PCBCL was investigated by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization with probes for the IGH, MYC, BCL6, and MLT1 loci.

The diagnostic and prognostic importance of recurrent chromosomal aberrations in systemic B cell lymphoma is well documented. In contrast, limited data exist on genetic changes in primary cutaneous B cell lymphoma. In this study we investigated chromosomal aberration patterns in two types of primary cutaneous B cell lymphoma with a different clinical behavior.

In Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), progressive neuronal cell death probably occurs as a result of a change in conformation of the physiological prion protein (PrP(C)). There is evidence of participation of the lymphatic system and in particular of lymphocytes in the intracorporeal transportation of the pathological prion protein (PrP(Sc)) in new variant CJD and scrapie. Using fluorescence cytometry, we investigated a possible alteration of PrP(C) on lymphocytes of patients with sporadic CJD.

We report the case of a 69 year old patient, who underwent transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) device change (Medtronic GEM VR 7227 Cx Active Can) because the ICD reached its replacement indicators. Preoperative chest X-ray and intraoperative defibrillation threshold tests and high voltage impedance did not show lead fracture of the five year old lead (Transvene 6936-65). At the second postoperative day the alarm of the newly implanted ICD device was activated because of high impedance in the painless lead impedance measurement (PLI) and the lead was replaced.

The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) has built up a web-site to support international scientific exchange and facilitate organizational tasks. Regular monitoring is required to get information on whether the site is actually used and by whom. Main aspects of the evaluation are function, structure and contents.

HELP-Multicentre Study, University Hospital Goettingen, Germany.
The efficacy of the heparin-induced extracorporeal LDL-precipitation (HELP)-apheresis procedure has been studied in an open prospective multicentre trial. After 2 years of regular weekly HELP-treatment the data from 39 of 51 patients could be evaluated according to the study criteria. Twelve of the initially recruited study patients were omitted from the evaluation either because of premature termination of the treatment or because they did not fulfil the exact guidelines of the study protocol.
