The treatment of relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with a dismal prognosis. The allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is frequently performed as salvage therapy. Reduced intensity conditioning protocols have been developed with the aim of reducing the leukemia burden without increasing their toxicity.

Background: It is unknown whether decompressive craniectomy improves clinical outcome for people with spontaneous severe deep intracerebral haemorrhage. The SWITCH trial aimed to assess whether decompressive craniectomy plus best medical treatment in these patients improves outcome at 6 months compared to best medical treatment alone.
Methods: In this multicentre, randomised, open-label, assessor-blinded trial conducted in 42 stroke centres in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, adults (18-75 years) with a severe intracerebral haemorrhage involving the basal ganglia or thalamus were randomly assigned to receive either decompressive craniectomy plus best medical treatment or best medical treatment alone.

Purpose: Data comparing lung ultrasound (LUS) and chest X-rays (CXRs) have increased over the past years. However, there still is a lack of knowledge as to how these modalities compare with one another in the critical care setting, and several factors, including artificial study conditions, limit the generalizability of most published studies. Our study aimed to analyze the performance of LUS in comparison with CXRs in real-world critical care practice.

Introduction: Sarcomas are rare cancers and very heterogeneous in their location, histological subtype, and treatment. Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of sarcoma patients has rarely been investigated in longitudinal studies.
Methods: Here, we assessed adult sarcoma patients and survivors between September 2017 and February 2020, and followed-up for one year in 39 study centers in Germany.

Background: Combined, platinum-based thoracic chemoradiotherapy (TCR) is the current state-of-the-art treatment for patients with limited disease (LD) small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). There is only limited data available regarding the effect of comorbidities on survival following TRC. The purpose of this study is to assess the age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (ACCI) as a predictor of overall survival in LD-SCLC patients undergoing TCR.

We changed our practice to include better preoperative utilisation of a clinical risk score (TWIST) and DUS. This led to a significant increase in the incidence of finding TT from 18% to 53%.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate preoperative blood-ocular barrier disruption via laser flare photometry (LFP) in patients diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), and to analyse possible associations with symptom duration and anatomical parameters.
Methods: We retrospectively analysed consecutive patients presenting with RRD at a single centre between January 2016 and March 2020. LFP was performed in both eyes after pupillary dilatation prior to RRD surgery.

Objective: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are a group of rare malignant tumours with a high and heterogenous disease burden. As evidence is scarce, we analysed the prevalence of increased emotional distress and identified distress-associated factors in these patients.
Methods: The PROSa-study (Burden and medical care of sarcoma) was conducted between 2017 and 2020 in 39 study centres.

Background: The optimal endovascular strategy for reperfusing distal medium-vessel occlusions (DMVO) remains unknown. This study evaluates angiographic and clinical outcomes of thrombectomy strategies in DMVO stroke of the posterior circulation.
Methods: TOPMOST (Treatment for Primary Medium Vessel Occlusion Stroke) is an international, retrospective, multicenter, observational registry of patients treated for DMVO between January 2014 and June 2020.

CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have evolved as a new standard-of-care (SOC) treatment in patients with relapsed/refractory (r/r) large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL). Here, we report the first German real-world data on SOC CAR T-cell therapies with the aim to explore risk factors associated with outcomes. Patients who received SOC axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel) or tisagenlecleucel (tisa-cel) for LBCL and were registered with the German Registry for Stem Cell Transplantation (DRST) were eligible.

Background: Sarcomas are rare cancers of high heterogeneity. Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) has been shown to be a prognostic factor for survival in other cancer entities but it is unclear whether this applies to sarcoma patients.
Patients And Methods: HRQoL was prospectively assessed in adult sarcoma patients from 2017 to 2020 in 39 German recruiting sites using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30).

Background: The use of ultrasonography in the intensive care unit (ICU) is steadily increasing but is usually restricted to examinations of single organs or organ systems. In this study, we combine the ultrasound approaches the most relevant to ICU to design a whole-body ultrasound (WBU) protocol. Recommendations and training schemes for WBU are sparse and lack conclusive evidence.

Background: A hallmark of many respiratory conditions is the presence of nocturnal symptoms. Nevertheless, especially in children there is currently still a huge diagnostic gap in detecting nighttime symptoms, which leads to an underestimation of the frequency in clinical practise.
Methods: We evaluated the clinical applicability and determined the formal test characteristics of the LEOSound ® system, a device for digital long-time recording and automated detection of acoustic airway events.

Background: Anesthesia leads to impairments in central and peripheral thermoregulatory responses. Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia is hence a common perioperative complication, and is associated with coagulopathy, increased surgical site infection, delayed drug metabolism, prolonged recovery, and shivering. However, surveys across the world have shown poor compliance to perioperative temperature management guidelines.

Advanced radiation techniques can reduce the severity of neurocognitive sequelae in young brain tumor patients. In the present analysis, we sought to compare neurocognitive outcomes after proton irradiation with patients who underwent photon radiotherapy (RT) and surgery. Neurocognitive outcomes were evaluated in 103 pediatric brain tumor patients (proton RT = 26, photon RT = 30, surgery = 47) before and after treatment.
