Toxins of the OA-group (okadaic acid, OA; dinophysistoxin-1, DTX-1) are the most prevalent in the fjords of southern Chile, and are characterized by their potential harmful effects on aquatic organisms. The present study was carried out to determine the acute toxicity of OA/DTX-1 on oxidative stress parameters in medaka () larvae. Medaka larvae were exposed to different concentrations (1.

Hypercoagulable state is linked to cancer progression; however, the precise role of the coagulation cascade is poorly described. Herein, we examined the contribution of a hypercoagulative state through the administration of intravenous Coagulation Factor Xa (FXa), on the growth of solid human tumors and the experimental metastasis of the B16F10 melanoma in mouse models. FXa increased solid tumor volume and lung, liver, kidney and lymph node metastasis of tail-vein injected B16F10 cells.

The Andes are the modern active example of a Cordilleran-type orogen, with mountain-building and crustal thickening within the upper plate of a subduction zone. Despite numerous studies of this emblematic mountain range, several primary traits of this orogeny remain unresolved or poorly documented. The onset of uplift and deformation of the Frontal Cordillera basement culmination of the Southern Central Andes is such an example, even though this structural unit appears as a first-order topographic and geological feature.

Background: The nonselective opioid receptor antagonist, naltrexone (NAL), reduces alcohol (ethanol [EtOH]) consumption in animals and humans and is an approved medication for treating alcohol abuse disorders. Proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived melanocortin (MC) and opioid peptides are produced in the same neurons in the brain, and recent preclinical evidence shows that MC receptor (MCR) agonists reduce excessive EtOH drinking in animal models. Interestingly, there is a growing body of literature revealing interactions between the MC and the opioid systems in the modulation of pain, drug tolerance, and food intake.

Autonomy has been hailed as the foremost principle of bioethics, and yet patients' decisions and research subjects' voluntary participation are being subjected to frequent restrictions. It has been argued that patient care is best served by a limited form of paternalism because the doctor is better qualified to take critical decisions than the patient, who is distracted by illness. The revival of paternalism is unwarranted on two grounds: firstly, because prejudging that the sick are not fully autonomous is a biased and unsubstantial view; secondly, because the technical knowledge of healthcare professionals does not include the ethical qualifications and prerogative to decide for others.

Objective: To compare the surface dose exposure to the lens of the eye and the thyroid gland received by patients undergoing spiral and conventional computed tomography (CT) examinations during dental implant pretreatment evaluation in critical radiosensitive structures of the maxillofacial region.
Study Design: Two groups of 10 patients each had a dental implant CT examination performed, with 5 patients in each group having maxillary and 5 having mandibular examinations. One group was examined with conventional CT and the other with spiral CT.
