Cell- and tissue-specific glycosylation pathways informed by single-cell transcriptomics.

NAR Genom Bioinform

December 2024

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering,  University at Buffalo-SUNY, 308 Furnas Hall, Buffalo, NY 14260, USA.

While single-cell studies have made significant impacts in various subfields of biology, they lag in the Glycosciences. To address this gap, we analyzed single-cell glycogene expressions in the Tabula Sapiens dataset of human tissues and cell types using a recent glycosylation-specific gene ontology (GlycoEnzOnto). At the median sequencing (count) depth, ∼40-50 out of 400 glycogenes were detected in individual cells.

Parallel mechanical computing: Metamaterials that can multitask.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

December 2024

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University at Buffalo (State University of New York), Buffalo, NY 14260-4400.

Decades after being replaced with digital platforms, analogue computing has experienced a surging interest following developments in metamaterials and intricate fabrication techniques. Specifically, wave-based analogue computers which impart spatial transformations on an incident wavefront, commensurate with a desired mathematical operation, have gained traction owing to their ability to directly encode the input in its unprocessed form, bypassing analogue-to-digital conversion. While promising, these systems are inherently limited to single-task configurations.

Individual organisms can function as ecosystems inhabited by symbionts. Symbionts may interact with each other in ways that subsequently influence their hosts positively or negatively, although the details of how these interactions operate collectively are usually not well understood. Vane-dwelling feather mites are common ectosymbionts of birds and are proposed to confer benefits to hosts by consuming feather-degrading microbes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how physical activity measurement methods (self-reported vs. accelerometer) impact the association between the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) scores and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in older women.
  • A total of 4,243 participants with no prior CVD were analyzed over an average of 7.5 years, revealing 707 new CVD events during the study period, which demonstrated a lower risk of CVD with higher LE8 scores regardless of measurement method.
  • Results suggested that while accelerometer data may provide a more accurate assessment of physical activity for LE8 evaluation, self-reported measures can still be useful when accelerometers are not feasible.

Department of Psychology, University at Buffalo SUNY, Buffalo, NY, USA; Neuroscience Program, University at Buffalo SUNY, Buffalo, NY, USA; Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior Program, University at Buffalo SUNY, NY, USA. Electronic address:

The neuropeptide, arginine vasopressin (AVP), has been implicated in social communication across a diverse array of species. Many rodents communicate basic behavioral states with negative versus positive valence through high-pitched vocalizations above the human hearing range (ultrasonic vocalizations; USVs). Previous studies have found that Brattleboro (Bratt) rats, which have a mutation in the Avp gene, exhibit deficits in their USVs from the early postnatal period through adolescence, but the magnitude of this effect appears to decrease from the juvenile to adolescent phase.

J Clin Hypertens (Greenwich)

October 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health, School of Public Health and Health Professions, University at Buffalo - SUNY, Buffalo, New York, USA.

Few studies have reported on the accuracy of self-reported hypertension history among older postmenopausal women, which was this study's objective. Participants were postmenopausal women enrolled in the Osteoporosis and Periodontal Disease (OsteoPerio) study, an ancillary investigation of the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study (WHI-OS) at the Buffalo, New York, clinical site. Participants self-reported their history of physician diagnosed hypertension treated with medication at WHI-OS enrollment (1993-1998; n = 1342, mean age 63 years), then 3 years later at OsteoPerio enrollment (1997-2001; n = 1342), and again at OsteoPerio Year 5 follow-up (2002-2005; n = 1020).

Elastic periodic lattices act as mechanical filters of incident vibrations. By and large, they forbid wave propagation within bandgaps and resonate outside them. However, they often encounter "truncation resonances" (TRs) inside bandgaps when certain conditions are met.

Economic segregation is the geographical separation of people with different economic means. In this paper, we employ an archival study of attitudes in regions with varying degrees of economic segregation and a series of experimental studies measuring reactions to hypothetical levels of segregation to examine how segregation affects concerns about inequality. Combining correlational and experimental methods and examining attitudes about economic inequality in both the United States and South Africa, we show that when individuals of different means are segregated from each other, people are less likely to engage in economic comparisons and are therefore less concerned by inequality.

Inclusive teaching is teaching in a way that reaches all students in the classroom; this is beneficial for everyone, particularly for those with minoritized identities. Instructors play a critical role in scaffolding how students are exposed to and learn science content in the classroom. In this manuscript, we discuss how biology instructors can make their classrooms more inclusive with regard to sex and gender diversity content.

Does Surgical Removal of the Thymus Have Deleterious Consequences?

Neurology

June 2024

From the Department of Neurology & Rehabilitation Medicine (H.J.K.), George Washington University, DC; Department of Pharmacology & Physiology (L.L.K.), and Department of Biostatistics (G.R.C.), University of Alabama at Birmingham; INSERM (R.L.P.), Institute of Myology, Center of Research in Myology, Sorbonne University, Paris, France; Department of Surgery (C.D.W.), Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA; and Department of Surgery (Y.P.), and Department of Neurology (G.I.W.), Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo/SUNY, NY.

The role of immunosenescence, particularly the natural process of thymic involution during aging, is increasingly acknowledged as a factor contributing to the development of autoimmune diseases and cancer. Recently, a concern has been raised about deleterious consequences of the surgical removal of thymic tissue, including for patients who undergo thymectomy for myasthenia gravis (MG) or resection of a thymoma. This review adopts a multidisciplinary approach to scrutinize the evidence concerning the long-term risks of cancer and autoimmunity postthymectomy.

Industrial and textile waste trade: Multilayer network and environmental policy effects.

Waste Manag

April 2024

Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo-SUNY, Buffalo, NY 14261, USA.

Waste management is an international enterprise, and it is important to understand global flows of recyclable materials. The Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH) suggests that waste moves from high income nations with stringent environmental policy to low income nations with less environmentally stringent policy, by exploiting low labor and regulatory costs. This paper assesses the PHH thesis for slag/dross and textiles (SDT) wastes in PHH through novel integration of the multilayer network and gravity models.
