Transition metal oxides are promising candidates for the next generation of spintronic devices due to their fascinating properties that can be effectively engineered by strain, defects, and microstructure. Heterogeneities in structure and polarization have been employed to enhance the energy storage properties of ferroelectric films. The presence of nonpolar phases, however, weakens the net polarization. Here, we achieve a slush-like polar state with fine domains of different ferroelectric polar phases by narrowing the large combinatorial space of likely candidates using machine learning methods.

Background: The heterogeneous phenotype of diabetic nephropathy (DN) from type 2 diabetes complicates appropriate treatment approaches and outcome prediction. Kidney histology helps diagnose DN and predict its outcomes, and an artificial intelligence (AI)-based approach will maximize clinical utility of histopathological evaluation. Humans are unique in their sophisticated culture and societal structures, their complex languages, and their extensive tool use. According to the human self-domestication hypothesis, this unique set of traits may be the result of an evolutionary process of self-induced domestication, in which humans evolved to be less aggressive and more cooperative. However, the only other species that has been argued to be self-domesticated besides humans so far is bonobos, resulting in a narrow scope for investigating this theory limited to the primate order.

Background And Objectives: Limited data is available on children with evidence of silent central nervous system demyelination on MRI. We sought to characterize the population in a US cohort and identify predictors of clinical and radiologic outcomes.

We investigated the longitudinal effects of the Second Step Child Protection Unit (CPU; Committee for Children) on student outcomes through a randomized controlled trial. Eight schools with a total sample including 2,031 students were assigned randomly to the CPU intervention or the wait-list control condition. We employed a multi-process latent growth model using a structural equation modeling framework which simultaneously analyzed student outcome growth via the effects of the intervention.

Endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 (Esm-1) is a secreted proteoglycan that attenuates inflammation. Alcohol and cannabis use progression milestones in adolescence (such as ages at first use, first intoxication and at onset of regular use) may inform the development of alcohol and cannabis use disorders. Although parent, sibling, and peer behavior and alcohol-related cognitions have been shown to be associated with alcohol milestone attainment, findings have been mixed; further, those factors' associations with cannabis use milestones are unknown. This study examined whether progression through such milestones differed as a function of perceived peer/sibling deviancy, parental rule-setting, and substance use outcome expectancies in a racially diverse adolescent sample.

Perovskite offers a framework that boasts various functionalities and physical properties of interest such as ferroelectricity, magnetic orderings, multiferroicity, superconductivity, semiconductor, and optoelectronic properties owing to their rich compositional diversity. These properties are also uniquely tied to their crystal distortion which is directly affected by lattice strain. Therefore, many important properties of perovskite can be further tuned through strain engineering which can be accomplished by chemical doping or simply element substitution, interface engineering in epitaxial thin films, and special architectures such as nanocomposites.

A metal-organic polyhedron (MOP) with four paramagnetic Fe(III) centers was studied as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probe. The MOP was characterized in solution by using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies, Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry, and in the solid state with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Water proton T relaxation properties were examined in solution and showed significant enhancement in the presence of human serum albumin (HSA).
