This study investigated the power of two-level hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to explain variability in intervention effectiveness between participants in context of single-case experimental design (SCED) research. HLM is a flexible technique that allows the inclusion of participant characteristics (e.g.

Globalization and climate change facilitate the spread and establishment of invasive species throughout the world via multiple pathways. These spread mechanisms can be effectively represented as diffusion processes on multi-scale, spatial networks. Such network-based modeling and simulation approaches are being increasingly applied in this domain.

Background: The proportion of motor vehicle crash fatalities involving alcohol-impaired drivers declined substantially between 1982 and 1997, but progress stopped after 1997. The systemic complexity of alcohol-impaired driving contributes to the persistence of this problem. This study aims to identify and map key feedback mechanisms that affect alcohol-impaired driving among adolescents and young adults in the U.

We have entered an era in which scientific knowledge and evidence increasingly inform research practice and policy. As there is an exponential increase in the use of personalized trials, there is a remarkable growing interest in the quantitative synthesis of personalized trials. One technique that is developed and can be applied for this purpose is meta-analysis.

As is well known, the late Husserl warned against the dangers of reifying and objectifying the mathematical models that operate at the heart of our physical theories. Although Husserl's worries were mainly directed at Galilean physics, the first aim of our paper is to show that many of his critical arguments are no less relevant today. By addressing the formalism and current interpretations of quantum theory, we illustrate how topics surrounding the mathematization of nature come to the fore naturally.

Gamete formation from germline stem cells (GSCs) is essential for sexual reproduction. However, the regulation of GSC differentiation is incompletely understood. Set2, which deposits H3K36me3 modifications, is required for GSC differentiation during Drosophila oogenesis.

Background: Behavioral health outpatients are at risk for self-harm. Identifying individuals or combination of risk factors could discriminate those at elevated risk for self-harm.
Methods: The study population (N = 248,491) included New York State Medicaid-enrolled individuals aged 10 to 64 with mental health clinic services between November 1, 2015 to November 1, 2016.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 8 (SCA8), a dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CTG•CAG expansion, is unusual because most individuals that carry the mutation do not develop ataxia. To understand the variable penetrance of SCA8, we studied the molecular differences between highly penetrant families and more common sporadic cases (82%) using a large cohort of SCA8 families (n = 77). We show that repeat expansion mutations from individuals with multiple affected family members have CCG•CGG interruptions at a higher frequency than sporadic SCA8 cases and that the number of CCG•CGG interruptions correlates with age at onset.

Emerging clinical data from the current COVID-19 pandemic suggests that ~ 40% of COVID-19 patients develop neurological symptoms attributed to viral encephalitis while in COVID long haulers chronic neuro-inflammation and neuronal damage result in a syndrome described as Neuro-COVID. We hypothesize that SAR-COV2 induces mitochondrial dysfunction and activation of the mitochondrial-dependent intrinsic apoptotic pathway, resulting in microglial and neuronal apoptosis. The goal of our study was to determine the effect of SARS-COV2 on mitochondrial biogenesis and to monitor cell apoptosis in human microglia non-invasively in real time using Raman spectroscopy, providing a unique spatio-temporal information on mitochondrial function in live cells.

Aging is paradoxically associated with a deteriorated immune defense (immunosenescence) and increased basal levels of tissue inflammation (inflammaging). The lung is particularly sensitive to the effects of aging. The immune cell mechanisms underlying physiological lung aging remain poorly understood.

A chemiluminescent probe has been developed, consisting of phenoxy-dioxetane moiety covalently attached to trans-cyclooctene. The inverse electron demand Diels-Alder reaction with tetrazine produces a cycloaddition product which undergoes a series of spontaneous rearrangements resulting in emission of green light. The chemiluminescent probe can be applied to study bioconjugation chemistry with tetrazine-modified biomaterials, which have recently been shown to have great potential for anticancer drug delivery.

Background: Emerging research has elucidated pathophysiological relationships among diabetes, disability, cognitive impairment, and incident dementia. However, the relationships between diabetes, disability, and dementia have been largely underexamined in Latino populations, which have a disproportionate prevalence of diabetes and its complications.
Aims: This study examines diabetes as a risk factor for subsequent disability and dementia risk in a Mexican-origin older adult sample.

The widespread use of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has led to the accelerated aging of the HIV-infected population, and these patients continue to have a range of mild to moderate HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Infection results in altered mitochondrial function. The HIV-1 viral protein Tat significantly alters mtDNA content and enhances oxidative stress in immune cells.

This paper is a review of a particular approach to the method of maximum entropy as a general framework for inference. The discussion emphasizes pragmatic elements in the derivation. An epistemic notion of information is defined in terms of its relation to the Bayesian beliefs of ideally rational agents.

Background: The immune pathways in Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain incompletely understood. Our recent study indicates that tissue-resident group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) accumulate in the brain barriers of aged mice and that their activation alleviates aging-associated cognitive decline. The regulation and function of ILC2 in AD, however, remain unknown.

Italy is an anomaly among its peers in the European Union (EU) because of its resistance to LGBTQ+ inclusion, acceptance, and legitimation. The acquisition of civil liberties-especially the right to same-sex marriage-remains a dream deferred for queer Italians, and the prioritization of transgender rights has just begun to be seen in broader political discourse. This paper investigates homophobia in Italy, and the social constructs and institutions that support it.

The ability to accurately and consistently discover anomalies in time series is important in many applications. Fields such as finance (fraud detection), information security (intrusion detection), healthcare, and others all benefit from anomaly detection. Intuitively, anomalies in time series are time points or sequences of time points that deviate from normal behavior characterized by periodic oscillations and long-term trends.

Elucidating the structure of RNA and RNA ensembles is essential to understand biological functions. In this work, we explored the previously uncharted reactivity of bis-chloropiperidines (B-CePs) towards RNA. We characterized at the molecular level the different adducts induced by the fast reacting compound B-CeP 1 with RNA.

Tree-ring chronologies underpin the majority of annually-resolved reconstructions of Common Era climate. However, they are derived using different datasets and techniques, the ramifications of which have hitherto been little explored. Here, we report the results of a double-blind experiment that yielded 15 Northern Hemisphere summer temperature reconstructions from a common network of regional tree-ring width datasets.

We propose a novel approach for building a classification/identification framework based on the full complement of RNA post-transcriptional modifications (rPTMs) expressed by an organism at basal conditions. The approach relies on advanced mass spectrometry techniques to characterize the products of exonuclease digestion of total RNA extracts. Sample profiles comprising identities and relative abundances of all detected rPTM were used to train and test the capabilities of different machine learning (ML) algorithms.
