Background: Noninvasive detection of primary graft dysfunction (PGD) remains a major challenge. SERCA2a plays an important role in cardiac homeostasis and its dysregulation has been associated with ventricular dysfunction and rejection. This study aimed to determine the potential utility of plasma levels of SERCA2a as a biomarker of PGD.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a clinical entity with specific features that impacts significantly on patient quality of life (QoL). CRSwNP is often associated with asthma and is difficult to control and manage despite pharmacological and/or surgical treatment. Omalizumab, a monoclonal anti-IgE antibody, has emerged as a putative therapeutic option.

Acute rejection after heart transplantation increases the risk of chronic dysfunction. Disturbances in mitochondrial function may play a contributory role, however, the relationship between histological signs of rejection in the human transplanted heart and expression levels of circulating mitochondrial genes, such as the mitochondrial Ca uniporter (MCU) complex, remains unexplored. We conducted an RNA-sequencing analysis to identify altered mitochondrial genes in serum and to evaluate their diagnostic accuracy for rejection episodes.

Objectives: We propose a novel and simple method to determine the magnitude of the curve in scoliosis and its correlation with the Cobb angle.
Methods: Using multiple rounds of nominal group technique and an established consensus-building methodology, a multidisciplinary research group identified a simple method to value the curve deformity based on the vertebral pedicles.
Measurements: A mathematical study was performed to determine the relationship between the Cobb angle and the concavity-convexity quotient (CCQ).

Background: Encrustation of ureteral double J stents is a common complication that may affect its removal. The aim of the proposed study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new oral composition to prevent double J stent encrustation in indwelling times up to 8 weeks.
Methods: A double-blinded, multicenter, placebo-controlled trial was conducted with 105 patients with indwelling double J stents enrolled across 9 public hospitals in Spain.

Objectives: Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungus that has been associated with nosocomial outbreaks with high rates of mortality and transmission. The aim of this study was to perform a retrospective cohort analysis of risk factors and to build a scoring method for estimating the risk of candidaemia in colonized critically ill patients.
Methods: We performed a retrospective observational cohort study of patients aged ≥15 years colonized by C.

Background: Acute rejection is one of the most important direct contributors to mortality after heart transplantation. Advances in the development of novel non-invasive approaches for the early identification of allograft rejection are necessary. We conducted a non-targeted proteome characterization focused on identifying multiple plasmatic protein differences to evaluate their diagnostic accuracy for rejection episodes.

Accumulating evidence has confirmed that the expression of sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 2a (SERCA2a) is downregulated in heart failure and cardiac allograft rejection. Although many SERCA2a-related genes and proteins involved in the regulation of myocardial Ca fluxes have been explored, its related metabolites remain poorly studied. Our main objective was to identify circulating SERCA2a-related metabolites altered in cardiac allograft rejection and to determine whether these could serve as non-invasive biomarkers.

The establishment of precision medicine in cancer patients requires the study of several biomarkers. Single-gene testing approaches are limited by sample availability and turnaround time. Next generation sequencing (NGS) provides an alternative for detecting genetic alterations in several genes with low sample requirements.

Introduction: This report presents uterine smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential course with an unpredictable clinical behavior and late metastases. Metastases have been described to the humerus, lung, and peritoneum.
Case Presentation: Hereby we present the case of a 71-year-old woman with a past surgical history of hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy due to a smooth muscle tumor of unknown malignant potential, who was evaluated 6 years later after the appearance of a mass in the proximal third of the right lower limb.

Prostate brachytherapy treatment using permanent implantation of low-energy (LE) low-dose rate (LDR) sources is successfully and widely applied in Europe. In addition, seeds are used in other tumour sites, such as ophthalmic tumours, implanted temporarily. The calibration issues for LE-LDR photon emitting sources are specific and different from other sources used in brachytherapy.

Neoplasias affecting the aorta are usually due to a variety of thoracic and abdominal tumors, which are more common than primary tumors of the aortic wall. Those tumors that can invade the abdominal aorta are usually sarcomas, which are able to mimic, both clinically and radiologically, an aortic disease such as an aneurysm or a dissection. There are few clinical scenarios where surgical resection and aortic repair needs to be performed, and indications have not still been clearly established in the literature.

Harnessing the patient's own immune system against an established cancer has proven to be a successful strategy. Within the last years, several antibodies blocking critical "checkpoints" that control the activation of T cells, the immune cells able to kill cancer cells, have been approved for the use in patients with different tumours. Unfortunately, these cases remain a minority.

However, the anti-inflammatory effects of the AZD8999 monotherapy or in combination with corticosteroids are unknown. This study investigates the anti-inflammatory effects of AZD8999 in monotherapy and combined with fluticasone propionate in neutrophils from healthy and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients.

Introduction: Piriform fossa sinus tracts (PFSTs) are a cause of recurrent neck infections in the pediatric population. Conventional management required open resection, but over the last years minimally invasive approaches have been reported in an attempt to endoscopically obliterate the PFST, using different methods such as electrocautery, laser, trichloroacetic acid, or silver nitrate.
Materials And Methods: We undertook a retrospective review of the medical records of 12 children (aged 4 months to 14 years) with PFSTs treated with endoscopic sclerosis with diathermy (ESD) between 2010 and 2016 at a tertiary care children's hospital.

Aims: Ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) leads to impaired contraction and ventricular dysfunction, causing high rates of morbidity and mortality. Epigenomics allows the identification of epigenetic signatures in human diseases. We analyse the differential epigenetic patterns of the ASB gene family in ICM patients and relate these alterations to their haemodynamic and functional status.
