As more cases of COVID-19 are studied and treated worldwide, it had become apparent that the lethal and most severe cases of pneumonia are due to an out-of-control inflammatory response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. I explored the putative causes of this specific feature through a detailed genomic comparison with the closest SARS-CoV-2 relatives isolated from bats, as well as previous coronavirus strains responsible for the previous epidemics (SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV). The high variability region of the nsp3 protein was confirmed to exhibit the most variations between closest strains.

We develop a method to investigate the effect of noise timescales on the first-passage time of nonlinear oscillators. Using Fredholm theory, we derive an exact integral equation for the mean event rate of a leaky integrate-and-fire oscillator that receives constant input and temporally correlated noise. Furthermore, we show that Fredholm theory provides a unified framework to determine the system scaling behavior for small and large noise timescales.

Size and structure of the sequence space of repeat proteins.

The coding space of protein sequences is shaped by evolutionary constraints set by requirements of function and stability. We show that the coding space of a given protein family-the total number of sequences in that family-can be estimated using models of maximum entropy trained on multiple sequence alignments of naturally occuring amino acid sequences. We analyzed and calculated the size of three abundant repeat proteins families, whose members are large proteins made of many repetitions of conserved portions of ∼30 amino acids.

How do we understand the emotional content of written words? Here, we investigate the hypothesis that written words that carry emotions are processed through phylogenetically ancient neural circuits that are involved in the processing of the very same emotions in nonlanguage contexts. This hypothesis was tested with respect to disgust. In an fMRI experiment, it was found that the same region of the left anterior insula responded whether people observed facial expressions of disgust or whether they read words with disgusting content.

Recently, we sequenced the genome, and subsequent comprehensive bioinformatic analysis, herein reported, revealed an unprecedented number of cellulosome-related components, including 78 cohesin modules scattered among 31 scaffoldins and more than 200 dockerin-bearing ORFs. Structural Properties of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Driven by Mechanical Interlayer Coupling.

Structural identification of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) is presented through a robust procedure based on the latest generation of transmission electron microscope, making possible a statistical analysis based on numerous nano-objects. This approach reveals that inner and outer tubes of DWNTs are not randomly oriented, suggesting the existence of a mechanical coupling between the two concentric walls. With the support of atomic-scale modeling, we attribute it to the presence of incommensurate domains whose structures depend on the diameters and helicities of both tubes and where inner tubes try to achieve a local stacking orientation to reduce strain effects.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare satisfaction, clinical scores, and complications of patients operated on anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) in outpatient setting compared to patients operated in the conventional hospitalization.

Patients And Methods: This prospective non-randomized study compared 30 patients (mean age 31 ± 9 years) operated on outpatient setting for an isolated ACLR matched 1:1 according to age, gender, body mass index, delay to surgery, and preoperative clinical score (IKDC) to 30 patients operated for an ACLR in our conventional hospitalization department during the same period. All the patients were operated on by the same surgeon.
