Hum Brain Mapp

December 2024

Department of Neurosciences and Mental Health, Fondazione IRCS Cà Granda Ospedale Policlinico, Milano, Italy.

Data aggregation across multiple research centers is gaining importance in the context of MRI research, driving diverse high-dimensional datasets to form large-scale heterogeneous sample, increasing statistical power and relevance of machine learning and deep learning algorithm. Site-related effects have been demonstrated to introduce bias in MRI features and confound subsequent analyses. Although Combating Batch (ComBat) technique has been recently reported to successfully harmonize multi-scale neuroimaging features, its performance assessments are still limited and largely based on qualitative visualizations and statistical analyses.

ECHO (Epidemiology of Cancer Healthcare & Outcomes), Department of Behavioural Science and Health, Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, UCL (University College London), 1-19 Torrington Place, London WC1E 7HB, UK. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines discrepancies in cancer case status and diagnosis dates between cancer registry (CR) data and electronic health records (EHRs) for five types of cancer over a period from 1999 to 2018.
  • Among the findings, agreement in cancer diagnoses varied significantly between datasets, with combined CPRD-HES data confirming 84% to 92% of diagnoses compared to CR, but lower rates for individual data sources like HES and CPRD.
  • The research concludes that while combined primary and secondary care data may often reflect case status accurately, inconsistencies in diagnosis dates could affect cancer risk estimates and diagnostic pathways in studies.

The potential effects of climate change on non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis in children.

Paediatr Respir Rev

October 2024

Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, Queensland Children's Hospital, Brisbane, Australia; Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia; Child Health Division, Menzies School of Health Research, Darwin, Australia.

Climate change may have devastating effects on the pathogenesis of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis in children since it affects the biological cycle of the respiratory pathogens and alters the human respiratory defense mechanisms. Bronchiectasis in children has been identified as an emerging global epidemic that has attracted the attention of the medical community over recent years. Pediatric pulmonologists should be aware of the consequences of climate change on children with bronchiectasis and plan strategies to ameliorate these effects.

Fugitive Acromegaly: A Historical, Clinical, and Translational Perspective.

Front Horm Res

November 2024

Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, Tufts Medical Center - Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

The term 'fugitive acromegaly' was introduced by the neurosurgeons Bailey and Cushing in 1928 to describe subjects manifesting signs and symptoms of somatotroph hyperfunction with pituitary insufficiency. Currently, it identifies patients with subtle acromegalic dysmorphisms and inconsistent hormonal profile, possibly presenting only with hyperprolactinemia and related clinical symptoms. Patients have rapidly growing, locally invasive, relapsing pituitary macrotumors that can be classified as either acidophil stem cell tumors (ASCTs) or sparsely granulated somatotroph tumors (SGSTs), both of PIT1-lineage.

Aim: One-third of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) do not achieve full remission and have high relapse rates even after treatment, leading to increased medical costs and reduced quality of life and health status. The possible specificity of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) neurobiology is still under investigation, with risk factors such as higher inflammatory markers being identified. Given recent findings on the role of choroid plexus (ChP) in neuroinflammation and hippocampus in treatment response, the aim of the present study was to evaluate inflammatory- and trophic-related differences in these regions along with ventricular volumes among patients with treatment-sensitive depression (TSD), TRD, and healthy controls (HCs).

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with translocation t(8;16)(p11;p13) represents a rare entity that has been categorized as a disease-defining recurring cytogenetic abnormality with adverse risk in the 2022 European LeukemiaNet classification. This rating was mainly based on a retrospective analysis comprising patients from several large clinical trials, which, however, included only 21 patients treated with allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT). Therefore, the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation performed a registry study on a larger cohort to evaluate the role of alloSCT in t(8;16) AML.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among women, and the incidence among younger women has shown the greatest increase over the last decades, in particular for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Moreover, the prognosis of women post-AMI is poor when compared with men of similar ages. Since the 1990s, an abundant literature has highlighted the existing differences between sexes with regard to presentation, burden, and impact of traditional risk factors and of risk factors pertaining predominantly to women, the perception of risk by women and men, and the pathophysiological causations, their treatment, and prognosis.
