Amniotic Fluid as a Potential Treatment for Vocal Fold Scar in a Rabbit Model.

J Voice

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT; Department of Surgery, University Utah, Salt Lake City, UT.

Objectives/hypothesis: Vocal fold (VF) injury and chronic inflammation can progress to scarring, which is notoriously difficult to treat. Human amniotic fluid (AF) has potential for VF wound healing in a rabbit model, and we hypothesized that AF would demonstrate wound healing properties superior to hyaluronic acid (HA) over time.

Study Design: Randomized, controlled trial.

Using Preference Cards to Support a Thoughtful, Evidence-based Orthopaedic Surgery Practice.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

April 2024

From the University Utah, Salt Lake City, UT (Dr. Bellaire); University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI (Dr. Nichol and Dr. Noonan); and Stanford University Medical Center, Stanford, CA (Dr. Shea).

Introduction: When orthopaedic surgeons begin or relocate their careers, they must communicate effectively about their instrumentation and equipment needs. 'Preference Cards' or 'Pick Lists' are generated by and for individual surgeons at the time of hire and can be updated over time to reflect their needs for common cases. Currently, such decisions are made without formal guidance or preparation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces a new method that uses continuous-time movement models (CTMMs) to analyze animal tracking data, allowing researchers to quantify interactions among individuals within animal populations more accurately than traditional GPS data methods.* -
  • By inferring full movement trajectories, the method can detect interactions that occur between GPS tracking points, as well as indirect interactions where individuals are at the same location but at different times.* -
  • Simulations showed that using this new method improved the accuracy of estimating interaction rates and spatial distributions, which is crucial for understanding the social structures of species like wild pigs and mule deer in relation to disease spread.*

Self-organized iron-oxide cementation geometry as an indicator of paleo-flows.

Sci Rep

June 2015

Department of Geological Sciences, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47405, USA.

Widespread iron oxide precipitation from groundwater in fine-grained red beds displays various patterns, including nodulation, banding and scallops and fingers. Hematite nodules have been reported also from the Meridiani Planum site on Mars and interpreted as evidence for the ancient presence of water on the red planet. Here we show that such patterns can autonomously emerge from a previously unrecognized Ostwald ripening mechanism and they capture rich information regarding ancient chemical and hydrologic environments.

Objective: To assess the association between oral antidiabetic drug (OAD) treatment concordance with National Kidney Foundation (NKF) guidelines and related economic and clinical outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and stage 3 to 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Methods: Analysis of nationwide health administrative claims and laboratory findings for the years 2005 to 2010 for a commercially insured U.S.

Unlabelled: Radiation Dose continues to be a concern with respect to all diagnostic imaging using ionizing radiation, but especially so with CT imaging. We have always known how to reduce radiation dose in CT - for example, simply turning down the system output (e.g.

Introduction And Hypothesis: The purpose of this study is to describe risk factors for post-operative urinary tract infection (UTI) the first year after stress urinary incontinence surgery.

Methods: Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed on data from 1,252 women randomized in two surgical trials, Stress Incontinence Surgical Treatment Efficacy trial (SISTEr) and Trial Of Mid-Urethral Slings (TOMUS).

Results: Baseline recurrent UTI (rUTI; ≥3 in 12 months) increased the risk of UTI in the first 6 weeks in both study populations, as did sling procedure and self-catheterization in SISTEr, and bladder perforation in TOMUS.

The nucleotide sequences of two segments of 6,737 ntp and 258 nto of the 18.4-kb circular mitochondrial (mt) DNA molecule of the soft coral Sarcophyton glaucum (phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, subclass Octocorallia, order Alcyonacea) have been determined. The larger segment contains the 3' 191 ntp of the gene for subunit 1 of the respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (ND1), complete genes for cytochrome b (Cyt b), ND6, ND3, ND4L, and a bacterial MutS homologue (MSH), and the 5' terminal 1,124 ntp of the gene for the large subunit rRNA (1-rRNA).

Pairs of intrafascicular electrodes were implanted within single fascicles of the nerve innervating the gastrocnemius muscle in cats. Measurements were made of fatigue induced in the muscle by single and dual channel tetanic stimulation. The level and rate of fatigue induced by concurrent dual channel stimulation (pulses presented simultaneously to the two electrodes) did not differ significantly from that induced by single channel stimulation.
