Metastasis to sartorius muscle from a muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Case Rep Med

January 2015

A University Urology Clinic, University of Athens, Laiko Hospital, 17 Agiou Thoma Street, 11527 Athens, Greece.

Bladder cancer constitutes the ninth most common cancer worldwide and approximately only 30% of cases are muscle invasive at initial diagnosis. Regional lymph nodes, bones, lung, and liver are the most common metastases from bladder cancer and generally from genitourinary malignancies. Muscles constitute a rare site of metastases from distant primary lesions even though they represent 50% of total body mass and receive a large blood flow.

High grade myofibroblastic sarcoma of paratesticular soft tissues.

Case Rep Oncol Med

September 2014

1st University Urology Clinic, Laiko Hospital, University of Athens, 17 Agiou Thoma Street, Attiki, 11527 Athens, Greece.

Tumors of the paratesticular region most often arise from the soft tissue surrounding the spermatic cord and the epididymis or from the soft tissue (dartos muscle) of the scrotal wall. Paratesticular tumors, despite their rarity, present a high incidence of malignancy (30%), and the therapeutic approach of choice is surgical resection with negative margin. The grade, the histology type, the presence of metastases during the diagnosis, the size of the tumor, the age of the patients, and the surgical margins are all important prognostic factors.

Phase II drugs currently being investigated for the treatment of hypogonadism.

Expert Opin Investig Drugs

December 2014

University Urology, Manhattan Medical Research , 215 Lexington Ave, Floor 20, New York, NY 10016 , USA +1 212 686 9015 ; +1 212 686 8607 ;

Introduction: Hypogonadism is the most common endocrine disorder, which affects men of all age groups. Recent shifts in public awareness, increased screening and recognition of symptoms and updated diagnostic criteria have led to an increase in men diagnosed as hypogonadal, including middle-aged and older men who previously would have been considered eugonadal. The increase in testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has paralleled an increase in advancements of treatment options.

View Article and Find Full Text PDF

The evaluation and treatment of hypogonadal men has become an important part of urologic practice. Fatigue, loss of libido, and erectile dysfunction are commonly reported, but nonspecific symptoms and laboratory verification of low testosterone (T) are an important part of evaluation in addition to a detailed history and physical examination. Significant intraindividual fluctuations in serum T levels, biologic variation of T action on end organs, the wide range of T levels in human serum samples, and technical limitations of currently available assays have led to poor reliability of T measurements in the clinical laboratory setting.

Purpose: Overactive bladder affects 12% to 17% of the general population and almost a third experience urinary incontinence, which may severely impact health related quality of life. Oral anticholinergics are the mainstay of pharmacological treatment but they are limited by inadequate efficacy or side effects, leading to a high discontinuation rate. We report the results of the first large (557 patients), phase 3, placebo controlled trial of onabotulinumtoxinA in patients with overactive bladder and urinary incontinence inadequately managed with anticholinergics.

Introduction: Men with hypogonadism exhibit decreased serum testosterone levels and may experience a constellation of clinical symptoms, including decrease in muscle mass, loss of sexual desire, impotence, and infertility. While previous studies have shown that implantation of extended release testosterone pellets can provide therapeutic levels of testosterone over several months, additional data are needed to establish this approach as the standard of care for male hypogonadism.

Aim: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of testosterone pellets over 6 months as a treatment for male hypogonadism in a clinical practice setting.
