Background: Diabetic kidney disease populations are categorized as high risk for fasting in Ramadan due to various potential fasting-related complications. Insulin analogues are recommended to be used in place of human insulin during fasting, as they carry a lower risk of hypoglycaemia and stable glycaemic variability. A paucity of data exits on the safety and efficacy of different basal insulin types during fasting for this population.

Combinatorial biosynthesis of novel aminoglycoside antibiotics via pathway engineering.

AMB Express

September 2024

Faculty of Pharmacy, University Technology MARA (UiTM), Campus Puncak Alam, Bandar Puncak Alam, Puncak Alam, 42300, Selangor, Malaysia.

With the current spread of clinically relevant multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, insufficient unearthing of new anti-infectives, and the high cost required for approval of new antimicrobial agents, a strong need for getting these agents via more economic and other alternative routes has emerged. With the discovery of the biosynthetic pathways of various antibiotics pointing out the role of each gene/protein in their antibiotic-producing strains, it became apparent that the biosynthetic gene clusters can be manipulated to produce modified antibiotics. This new approach is known as the combinatorial biosynthesis of new antibiotics which can be employed for obtaining novel derivatives of these valuable antibiotics using genetically modified antibiotic-producing strains (pathway engineering).

Istamycins (ISMs) are 2-deoxyfortamine-containing aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGAs) produced by Streptomyces tenjimariensis ATCC 31603 with broad-spectrum bactericidal activities against most of the clinically relevant pathogens. Therefore, this study aimed to statistically optimize the environmental conditions affecting ISMs production using the central composite design (CCD). Both the effect of culture media composition and incubation time and agitation rate were studied as one factor at the time (OFAT).

Objective: Owing to the rising incidence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) and the high mortality rates associated with such bacterial infections post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), we investigated the MDRO colonization rate prior to transplantation using an active surveillance approach and determined its impact on subsequent infection during the pre-engraftment period.

Methods: A single-center observational study was conducted, and surveillance cultures from multiple body sites, including the rectum, nasal cavity, and groin, were performed at admission to determine MDRO colonization. Serological tests were used to detect certain viruses and toxoplasmosis before HSCT.

Evaluation of Phosphorus Storage and Performance of Broilers Using Phytase Synthetic Enzyme.

Arch Razi Inst

February 2023

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, College of Pharmacy, University of Mosul, Mosul-41001, Iraq.

Phytic acid is a stored form of phosphorus in cereals, 65 to 70% of phosphorus in plant sources is phytate, and broilers are only able to use part of the phosphorus in plant sources. To meet the needs of chickens, it is necessary to use other artificial resources, which not only impose part of the cost of the breeding period because of its presence in the manure but is one of the factors polluting the environment. This study aimed to use different levels of phytase enzyme to reduce dietary phosphorus levels.

Digital impression provides several advantages in implant prosthodontics; however, its use in full-arch rehabilitations, especially immediately after surgery, has yet to be validated. The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyse the fit of immediate full-arch prostheses, fabricated using conventional or digital impressions. Patients requiring a full-arch immediate loading rehabilitation were divided into three groups: T1 (digital impression taken immediately after surgery), T2 (Preoperative digital impression, guided surgery-prefabricated temporary bridge) and C (conventional impression taken immediately after surgery).

Emerging evidence suggests that cognitive impairments may result from various factors, such as neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, impaired neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, amyloid β protein (Aβ) deposition, and gut dysbiosis. Meanwhile, dietary polyphenol intake in a recommended dosage has been suggested to reverse cognitive dysfunction via various pathways. However, excessive intake of polyphenols could trigger unwanted adverse effects.

Background: Management strategies of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) need to be tailored to the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV, exacerbations, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of individual patients. In this study, we analyzed the association and correlation between the FEV, exacerbations, and PROs of patients with stable COPD.

Methods: This was a post-hoc analysis of pooled data from two cross-sectional studies that were previously conducted in Malaysia from 2017 to 2019, the results of which had been published separately.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on understanding Malaysians' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to mental health during the later stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, involving a nationwide survey with over 2,100 participants.
  • - Results showed that while respondents had good knowledge about COVID-19, with an average knowledge score of 10 out of 12, their attitudes and practices were less positive, indicating a disconnect between what they knew and how they acted.
  • - The study concluded that although knowledge was high, it did not lead to improved attitudes or practices, suggesting a need for targeted health education to bridge these gaps in the context of ongoing pandemic challenges.
