Introduction: Peritoneal carcinomatosis is difficult to treat. Pressurized Intra-Peritoneal Aerosolised Chemotherapy (PIPAC) is a novel method of delivering chemotherapy to the peritoneal cavity, aiming for homogenous and deeper drug distribution. To date, limited chemotherapeutics have been used with promising results.

Objectives: Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally. A multitude of screening methods has been devised for early diagnosis, including the faecal immunochemical test (FIT). This qualitative review aims to discover the barriers and facilitators to the utility of the FIT from the general population's perspective.

Objective: This study was performed to explore in-depth, the issues and barriers pertaining to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening amongst the siblings of CRC patients in view of their higher risk of developing CRC.
Methods: A qualitative study of siblings of CRC patients was performed from August 2017 to October 2018. Semi-structured interviewed were performed until data saturation was achieved.

Background: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating cerebrovascular disease with high morbidity and mortality. Branching pattern of the lenticulostriate arteries from the middle cerebral artery makes them susceptible to formation of microaneurysms, which have been implicated in hypertensive ICH. Recurrence of hematoma due to delayed development of pseudoaneurysm after initial surgical evacuation is uncommon.

Background: Emergency surgery (ES) is the standard-of-care for left-sided obstructing colon cancer, with self-expanding metallic stents (SEMSs) and diverting colostomies (DCs) being alternative approaches. The aim of this study was to review the short- and long-term outcomes of SEMS versus ES or DC.
Methods: Embase and Medline were searched for articles comparing SEMS versus ES or DC.

Obstructed colorectal cancers (CRCs) continue to be challenging to manage. Apart from surgical resection, the use of self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) has become increasingly popular. SEMS could potentially allow for the conversion of an emergency operation into a semi-elective procedure, allow for the optimization of the patient's physiology, avoid the requirement for a stoma, as well as allow for a minimally-invasive approach to be adopted.

Introduction: Elderly patients with colorectal cancer are high-risk surgical candidates. ERAS protocols have been developed to mitigate against these risks. We performed this study to quantify the risks which elderly patients face and then to determine independent risk factors for short-term ERAS-specific outcomes.

Peritoneal metastasis (PM) frequently occurs in patients with gastric cancer (GC) and confers a dismal prognosis despite advances in systemic chemotherapy. While systemic chemotherapy has poor peritoneal penetration, intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy remains sequestered, resulting in high peritoneal drug concentrations with less systemic side-effects. The first application of IP treatment was hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) for gastric cancer peritoneal metastasis (GCPM); but was associated with an increased morbidity and mortality rate without significantly improving overall survival (OS).

Purpose: Metformin may have a role in reducing the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) and improving survival outcome. This meta-analysis explored the effect of metformin use on colorectal adenoma and cancer incidence, and colorectal oncological outcomes.
Methods: A database search was conducted on Medline, Embase and CNKI for studies comparing metformin vs.

Background: Studies in Caucasian populations suggest that interest among medical students in pursuing a surgical career is dwindling. We sought to investigate these trends and to evaluate the impact of resident teaching in a multiethnic Asian population.
Study Design: Between 2015 and 2017, 1780 Singaporean third- and fifth-year medical students completed a structured anonymized questionnaire following the completion of an 8-week general surgery rotation.

Intraperitoneal chemotherapy has shown promising results for the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis in gastric cancer. However, the implantation of an intraperitoneal chemotherapy port may be associated with catheter-related complications. The authors describe a case of cutaneous port-site recurrence secondary to tumour seeding from an intraperitoneal chemotherapy access port.

Background & Aims: There are few in vitro models for studying the 3-dimensional interactions among different liver cell types during organogenesis or disease development. We aimed to generate hepatic organoids that comprise different parenchymal liver cell types and have structural features of the liver, using human pluripotent stem cells.
Methods: We cultured H1 human embryonic stem cells (WA-01, passage 27-40) and induced pluripotent stem cells (GM23338) with a series of chemically defined and serum-free media to induce formation of posterior foregut cells, which were differentiated in 3 dimensions into hepatic endoderm spheroids and stepwise into hepatoblast spheroids.

Aim: This article aims to inform and share the experience of a Singaporean tertiary level neurosurgical unit in an academic medical centre during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Method: This is a descriptive study of our segregation team model which is designed with the aim of optimizing manpower and ensuring the safety and welfare of the neurosurgical unit, while maintaining and prioritizing excellent patient care.
Result: We describe our method of team segregation, rostering, and outline some principles that we adhere to in its design.

Transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) carried out synchronously with laparoscopy is a useful surgical technique in rectal cancer patients who are overweight or who have a narrow pelvis. This retrospective study aims to compare the safety and efficacy of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) laparoscopic TaTME of rectal cancer based on the short-term postoperative and oncological outcomes of 40 patients in Singapore who underwent laparoscopic TaTME. Forty patients underwent laparoscopic TaTME for rectal cancer in one of three centers in Singapore from October 2015 to August 2018.

These methods are susceptible to model misspecifications, which are commonly addressed by applying monotonic transformations (e.g.

Introduction: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs for patients undergoing colorectal surgery has yielded promising results. However, there remains controversy regarding the application of ERAS protocols in an elderly population. The aim of this review is to compare the clinical outcomes between ERAS versus conventional peri-operative care (Non-ERAS) for colorectal surgery in patients aged ≥ 65 years old.

Objectives: Colorectal cancer is among the top three most common cancers globally. In order to reduce the health burden, it is important to improve the uptake of colorectal cancer screening by understanding the barriers and facilitators encountered. There are numerous reports in the literature on the views of the general public on cancer screening.

The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic has become the focus of attention worldwide, and herein we seek to highlight the potential problem of ‘collateral mortality’ from delayed or deferred treatments in patients with cancer. We propose potential solutions to ensure continuity of care in the field of surgical oncology.
