Inherently chiral multi-adducts of [60]fullerene represent unique chiral molecular tectons featuring fascinating optoelectronic properties. Herein we discuss the most recent progress in the synthesis of enantiomerically pure bis- and trisadducts of C60 with the inherently chiral trans-3 and all-trans-3 addition patterns utilizing cyclo-[n]-malonate tethers derived from (-)-dimethyl-2,3-O-isopropylidene-L-tartrate. Some future perspectives regarding the investigation of these chiral building blocks in modern areas of research are discussed.

Central venous cannulation is a commonly preformed procedure in many branches of medicine, particularly in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. The purpose of this study was to compare the landmark-guided technique to the ultrasound-guided technique for internal jugular vein cannulation in cardiovascular surgery patients. One hundred cardiovascular surgery patients, of whom 65 were male and 35 were female with ages ranging from 22 to 65, who had internal jugular cannulation between December 2010-March 2011 in our clinic were investigated prospectively.

The present study analyzed the possible anxiolytic, antidepressant and antioxidant proprieties of inhaled coriander volatile oil extracted from Coriandrum sativum var. microcarpum in beta-amyloid (1-42) rat model of Alzheimer's disease. The anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects of inhaled coriander volatile oil were studied by means of in vivo (elevated plus-maze and forced swimming tests) approaches.

We have synthesized and isolated two C2-symmetric enantiomerically pure trisadducts of C60 with an inherently chiral trans-3,trans-3,trans-3 addition pattern with the aid of an enantiopure cyclo-tris-malonate tether. An unexpected stereoisomerism was observed which was attributed to the spatial arrangement of spacers in the tether.

A pentakis-adduct of C60 with an incomplete octahedral addition pattern was synthesised via a one-pot procedure using a tether equipped with five malonate moieties. The five-fold Bingel cyclopropanation of C60 was completely regioselective and afforded a chiral, C2-symmetric pentakis-adduct which was easily separated by column chromatography on SiO2.

In this Article, we describe the synthesis of two optically pure diols bearing a 1,2-diol moiety masked as an isopropylidene acetal group and long alkyl chains comprised of 12 and 14 carbon atoms, respectively. The synthetic methodology that was developed offers a general way for the synthesis of optically pure diols with long alkyl chains. Diols (-)-4 and (-)-9 were subjected to a condensation reaction with malonyl dichloride to afford two cyclo-[2]-malonate tethers that were separated by column chromatography in optically pure form.

Lavender is used in traditional medicines in Asia, Europe, ancient Greece and Rome, and was mentioned in the Bible and in ancient Jewish texts. Also, lavender is reported to be an effective medical plant in treating inflammation, depression, stress and headache. The present study was undertaken in order to investigate the antioxidant and antiapoptotic activities of the lavender essential oils from Lavandula angustifolia ssp.

A new polymorph of 2-(benzotriazol-2-yl)acetic acid, C(8)H(7)N(3)O(2), crystallizes in the space group C2/c (Z = 8). The non-planar mol-ecule has a synplanar conformation of the carb-oxy group. The crystal structure features helices parallel to the b axis sustained by O-H⋯N hydrogen bonding which are similar to those in the known polymorph [Giordano & Zagari (1978 ▶).

Prolonged read-out process of a hologram recorded at near infrared with simultaneous green light exposure is measured in Ru-doped Bi12SiO20 crystal. The experimental results are confirmed by numerical simulations, suggesting two different traps involved in the space-charge transport mechanism. In addition, quasi-permanent holographic recording of image with fast updating speed by using two-wavelength recording is demonstrated.

In vitro and in vivo release of the theophylline, loaded in mixed polysaccharidic cellulose/chondroitin sulfate (C/CS) hydrogels has been evaluated. The C/CS hydrogels in various mixing ratios obtained by a crosslinking technique were supplementary characterized by swelling studies in a pH 2.2 acidic solution at 37 °C, simulating the gastrointestinal medium, as in vivo theophylline delivery was done by oral administration.

Mixed hydrogels based on natural, biodegradable and biocompatible polysaccharides, such as cellulose (C) and chondroitin sulphate (CS) in various mixing ratios were prepared by a crosslinking technique and characterized by swelling behaviour, FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, toxicity and biocompatibility tests. The mixed cellulose/chondroitin sulphate hydrogels have been loaded with 7-[2-nitroxiacetyl-oxy-3-(4-acetyl-amino-phenoxy)-propyl]-8-morpholino-1,3-dimethyl-xanthine, a novel nitric oxide donor compound with a lower toxicity and a higher anti-inflammatory activity than its parent molecules, paracetamol and theophylline. Swelling and release kinetics have been also studied.

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is known to stimulate osteoblast or osteoprogenitor cell activity. We investigated the effect of locally applied PDGF from poly-D,L-lactide (PDLLA)-coated implants on fracture healing in a rat model. A closed fracture of the right tibia of four-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 40) was stabilised with implants coated with a biodegradable PDLLA versus implants coated with PDLLA and PDGF.

Different derivatives of Guanine (G) and Cytosine (C), which sterically enforce the Watson-Crick (WC) conformer, have been studied in CHCl(3) by means of broad-band transient absorption spectroscopy. Our experiments rule out the involvement of an Excited State Proton Transfer (ESPT), which dominates the excited state decay of GC in the gas phase. Instead, the ultrafast dynamics via internal conversion occurs in a polar environment mainly by relaxation in the monomer moieties.

Galactose-specific lectins (Gal-lectins) were isolated from the mitochondrial fraction of prostate post-operational hyperplasic tissue of two diagnoses: benign prostate hyperplasic tissue with low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGPIN) and benign prostate hyperplasic tissue with atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH). They had similar molecular weight and other properties. Effects of these lectins were investigated in vitro model experiments on bovine liver cells mitochondrial properties.

Soil salinization is increasing steadily in many parts of the world and causes major problems for plant productivity. Under these stress conditions, root-associated beneficial bacteria can help improve plant growth and nutrition. In this study, salt-tolerant bacteria from the rhizosphere of Uzbek wheat with potentially beneficial traits were isolated and characterized.

This work evaluates the (cor-)relations between selected biochemical responses to toxic Cd and the degree of Cd sensitivity in a set of pea genotypes. Ten genotypes were analysed that differ in their growth response to Cd when expressed as root or shoot tolerance indices (TIs). Concentrations of non-protein thiols (NPTs) and malondialdehyde (MDA), activity of chitinase, peroxidase (POX), and catalase significantly increased in all pea genotypes treated with Cd.
