Domestic and peer violence in secondary school among adolescents: can telemedicine help?

Domestic and peer violence in Macedonia is similar to other developed nations. It is present among adolescents and their families. A study was conducted on 664 secondary school students throughout Macedonia.

Parosteal osteosarcoma.

In this retrospective clinical study, 6 cases of osteosarcoma of the bone have been analyzed. Five patients were with parosteal osteosarcoma and one with periosteal osteosarcoma. The study was performed at the Clinic for Orthopaedic Surgery in Skopje, Macedonia, from 1995 to 2005.

Dentinal hypersensitivity following scaling and root planing: comparison of low-level laser and topical fluoride treatment.

The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of low-level laser irradiation to traditional topical fluoride treatment for treatment choices of dentinal hypersensitivity following scaling and root planing. The experimental group (15 patients) was treated with low-energy-level diode laser at each site of dentinal hypersensitivity following scaling and root planning. The control group (15 patients) received topical fluoride treatment (protective varnish for desensitization).

Methodological and organizational aspects of newborn screening for congenital hypothyroidism in Macedonia.

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is the most common preventable cause of mental retardation. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to the prevention of severe intellectual deficit. Neonatal screening in a blood spot from the heel of the newborn between the 2nd and 5th day after birth and determination of thyroid stimulation hormone (TSH) level by fluoroimmunoassay (DELFIA method) is the commonly used approach for the timely detection and therapy of congenital hypothyroidism.

Functional outcome and quality of life after coronary artery bypass surgery in patients with severe heart failure and hibernated myocardium.

Background: Myocardial viability is an important parameter, predictive of improvement in left ventricular function after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). We wanted to define the relationship between the extent of hibernated myocardium and improvement in ejection fraction function and quality of life after CABG.

Methods: Sixty-five consecutive patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy (mean LVEF <40%) undergoing surgical revascularization were studied with (99m)Tc-sestamibi myocardial perfusion Gated SPECT imaging (MPI) to assess preoperative myocardial viability.

Effect of clofibrate on the enzymes associated with oxidative stress in Wistar rat liver.

Background: A diversity of endogenous and exogenous compounds have been demonstrated to cause proliferation of peroxisomes and variety of associated effects in rodents. The aim of our study was to see the effect of clofibrate on the enzymes associated with oxidative stress.

Methods: Male Wistar rats weighting 250-350 g were treated with clofibrate in a dose of 250 mg/1000 g/ 24 h for 12 days.

The impact of ambient temperature on mortality among the urban population in Skopje, Macedonia during the period 1996-2000.

Background: This study assesses the relationship between daily numbers of deaths and variations in ambient temperature within the city of Skopje, R. Macedonia.

Methods: The daily number of deaths from all causes, during the period 1996-2000, as well as those deaths from cardiovascular diseases, occurring within the city of Skopje were related to the average daily temperature on the same day using Multiple Regression statistical analyses.

Relation between retrobulbar circulation and progression of diabetic retinopathy.

Aims: To investigate retrobulbar circulatory parameters in type 2 diabetic patients with and without diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression.

Methods: This was a prospective cohort study. One eye of 35 diabetic patients with background DR (BDR) were included in the study.

Earthquake consequences and measures for reduction of seismic risk.

Earthquakes are one of the most destructive of all natural disasters. This article discusses the consequences of earthquakes on material property. In addition, measures for the control and reduction of the consequences of earthquakes are described.
