Inhibition of CHI3L1 decreases N-cadherin and VCAM-1 levels in glioblastoma.

Pharmacol Rep

November 2024

Division of Histology and Embryology, Department of Human Morphology and Embryology, Wroclaw Medical University, T. Chałubińskiego 6a, Wroclaw, 50-368, Poland.

The protein CHI3L1 contributes to cancer development by several mechanisms, including stimulation of angiogenesis and invasion as well as immunomodulatory effects. These properties make it a potential target for the development of targeted therapies in precision medicine. In this context, the particular potential of CHI3L1 inhibition could be considered in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), whose tumors exhibit high levels of angiogenesis and increased CHI3L1 expression.

New insights into the role of the CHI3L2 protein in invasive ductal breast carcinoma.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Immunology, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Ludolf-Krehl Street 13-17, 68167, Mannheim, Germany.

Chitinase-like proteins have multiple biological functions that promote tumor growth, angiogenesis and metastasis. Expression of CHI3L2, which is similar in structure to CHI3L1, is detected in glioma cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in glioma and breast cancer. However, its exact role remains unclear.

  • The study assessed the comfort, functionality, and style of professional footwear among nurses, looking at 120 clinical nurses aged 40-50 who wore specific footwear for at least 7 hours a day.
  • Key measurements were taken using the CQ-ST podoscope, along with surveys regarding footwear perception, and the analysis revealed important correlations between foot structure and footwear comfort.
  • Results suggest that the medical footwear tested meets nurses' needs and emphasizes the importance of offering various widths for different shoe sizes, especially for women with specific foot conditions.

: This study aimed to find if a relationship exists between antero-posterior malocclusions and the level of musculoskeletal disorders in adults, including body posture and static foot analysis. : In all, 420 participants were recruited through convenience sampling (Kraków University students and patients of a local dentist's practice). Following general medical interviews, dental examinations and consideration of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 90 healthy volunteers (ages 19-35) were enrolled and assigned to three groups ( = 30) based on occlusion type (Angle's molar Class I, II or III).

: The Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Motor Performance and Sensory Assessment Scale (FMA) is the most commonly used and recommended outcome measure for the sensorimotor impairment of the upper and lower limbs in stroke patients. The aim of this study was to perform cross-cultural translation and adaptation of the scale into Polish and to evaluate the FMA's reliability of motor performance and sensation of the upper and lower limb sections among ischemic stroke patients. : The Polish version of the FMA (FMA-PL) was developed using a forward-backward translation performed by a group of experts and then evaluated by a panel of judges according to international guidelines.

Background: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), also known as exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), is typically caused by strenuous and/or unaccustomed physical exercise. DOMS/EIMD manifests itself in reduced muscle strength and performance levels, increased muscle soreness, swelling, and elevated levels of inflammatory biomarkers. Numerous randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews (SRs) of a wide variety of physiotherapy interventions for reducing the signs and symptoms of DOMS/EIMD have been published.

There is a growing need for a mouthguard sheet material with higher shock absorption and dispersion capacity than those obtained by conventional materials. A five-layer mouthguard sheet material was previously developed using laminated ethylene vinyl acetate and polyolefin copolymer resin. In this study, the shock absorption capacity and dispersion capability of the new sheet material were investigated and compared with those of other materials.

Background: The digit ratio (2D:4D), the ratio of the lengths of second (2D) to the fourth (4D) fingers, is a proxy indicator of prenatal androgen exposure. On average, males display lower 2D:4D than females. Previous studies have shown that lower 2D:4D ratios were associated with better sports and physical abilities.

Background: Recent studies have indicated that the skin lymphatic system and interstitium may play a role in the pathophysiology of arterial hypertension (AH).

Objectives: We aimed to determine whether the set of pathway parameters described previously in rodents would allow for the distinction between hypertensive and normotensive patients.

Material And Methods: Molecular and histopathological parameters from the skin and blood of patients with AH (AH group, n = 53), resistant AH (RAH group, n = 32) and control (C group, n = 45) were used, and a statistical multivariate bootstrap methodology combining partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and selectivity ratio (SR) were applied.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of different storage solutions on the preservation of domestic cat ovaries during cold-storage.
  • Findings indicate that storing whole ovaries in SP+ solution for 48 hours maintains better follicular morphology compared to DPBS, while UW solution is preferable for ovarian tissue fragments.
  • It is recommended that ovarian fragmentation be avoided prior to cold-storage, as it negatively impacts follicular structure preservation.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a crucial process with significance in the metastasis of malignant tumors. It is through the acquisition of plasticity that cancer cells become more mobile and gain the ability to metastasize to other tissues. The mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) is the return to an epithelial state, which allows for the formation of secondary tumors.

It is now widely recognized that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess the capacity to differentiate into a wide array of cell types. Numerous studies have identified the role of lncRNA in the regulation of MSC differentiation. It is important to elucidate the role and interplay of microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the regulation of signalling pathways that govern MSC function.

Biol Sport

October 2023

Department of Sports Medicine and Human Nutrition, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University School of Physical Education in Kraków, Poland.

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of an eight-week Paleo diet on the health status (body composition, haematology and biochemistry of blood and urine) and the level of physical capacity (aerobic and anaerobic) of professional handball players.
