Several studies indicate a relationship between maternal gut microbiota alteration and increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in offspring. The possibility of compensating for such metabolic dysfunction at a very early stage of disease via maternal treatment has not been enough explored. Here, we examined in BTBR mouse model of ASD the effect of maternal treatment with the gut microbial metabolite butyrate (BUT) on the behavioral and synaptic plasticity deficits in juvenile and adult offspring.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares outcomes of robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) and percutaneous thermal ablation (PTA) in patients with renal cell carcinoma in a solitary kidney.
  • Results showed both methods had similar complication rates, but the recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate was higher with RAPN (96.1%) compared to PTA (86.8%).
  • The authors suggest PTA is a viable option for treating kidney cancer in frailer patients, despite a potential higher recurrence risk, due to its ability to allow for re-treatment if necessary.

Aims/hypothesis: Antibodies specific to oxidative post-translational modifications (oxPTM) of insulin (oxPTM-INS) are present in most individuals with type 1 diabetes, even before the clinical onset. However, the antigenic determinants of such response are still unknown. In this study, we investigated the antibody response to oxPTM-INS neoepitope peptides (oxPTM-INSPs) and evaluated their ability to stimulate humoral and T cell responses in type 1 diabetes.

Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer Group, Liver Unit, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi Sunyer, Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red Enfermedades Hepáticas y Digestivas, Barcelona 08036, Spain.

Background: Dermatologic adverse events (DAEs) are associated with a better outcome in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) irrespective of the therapeutic agent received. The exact mechanisms associated with the development of DAEs are unknown although several studies point to direct toxicity of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) to the skin or an immune-mediated reaction triggered by the oncologic treatment. As is the case in other conditions, individual genetic variants may partially explain a higher risk of DAEs.

Glucose and glutamine play a crucial role in the metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells. Proliferating cells metabolize glucose in the aerobic glycolysis for energy supply, and glucose and glutamine represent the primary sources of carbon atoms for the biosynthesis of nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids. Glutamine is also an important nitrogen donor for the production of nucleotides, amino acids, and nicotinamide.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive deterioration of cognitive functions. Cortical and hippocampal hyperexcitability intervenes in the pathological derangement of brain activity leading to cognitive decline. As key regulators of neuronal excitability, the voltage-gated K channels (K) might play a crucial role in the AD pathophysiology.

Borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) account for approximately 15% of all epithelial ovarian cancers. In 80% of cases the diagnosis of BOTs is done at stage I and more than a third of BOTs occurs in women younger than 40 years of age wishing to preserve their childbearing potential; the issue of conservative surgical management (fertility-sparing treatment) is thus becoming of paramount importance. At early stages, the modalities of conservative treatment could range from mono-lateral cystectomy to bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.

We address a three-tier numerical framework based on nonlinear manifold learning for the forecasting of high-dimensional time series, relaxing the "curse of dimensionality" related to the training phase of surrogate/machine learning models. At the first step, we embed the high-dimensional time series into a reduced low-dimensional space using nonlinear manifold learning (local linear embedding and parsimonious diffusion maps). Then, we construct reduced-order surrogate models on the manifold (here, for our illustrations, we used multivariate autoregressive and Gaussian process regression models) to forecast the embedded dynamics.

In persons with congenital severe hemophilia A (HA) living in high-income countries, twice weekly intravenous infusions of extended half-life (EHL) factor VIII (FVIII) products, or weekly/biweekly/monthly subcutaneous injections of emicizumab are the gold standard home treatments to grant days without hurdles and limitations. Once weekly/twice monthly infusions of EHL Factor IX (FIX) products achieve the same target in severe hemophilia B (HB). Gene therapy, which is likely to be licensed for clinical use within 1-2 years, embodies a shift beyond these standards.
