Functional brain dysconnectivity measured with resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) has been linked to cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. This study investigated the effects on functional brain connectivity of Integrated Psychological Therapy (IPT), a cognitive behavioral oriented group intervention program, in 31 patients with schizophrenia. Patients received IPT or an equal intensity non-specific psychological treatment in a non-randomized design.

The mammalian calvarial vault is an ancient and highly conserved structure among species, however, the mechanisms governing osteogenesis of the calvarial vault and how they might be conserved across mammalian species remain unclear. The aim of this study was to determine if regional differences in osteogenic potential of the calvarial vault, first described in mice, extend to humans. We derived human frontal and parietal osteoblasts from fetal calvarial tissue, demonstrating enhanced osteogenic potential both and of human frontal derived osteoblasts compared to parietal derived osteoblasts.

Background And Aim: After the first Italian case of Covid-19, the Government imposed the complete closure of all areas involved by the spread of the virus to contain transmissions. There was a massive reorganization of Hospitals, a stop of all elective activities and a convertion of many hospitals in "Covid Centers''. AITOG (Associazione Italiana Traumatologia e Ortopedia Geriatrica) conducted a retrospective study on all proximal femur fractures surgeries that occurred in this period, to find out whether the pandemic and the correlated lockdown somehow changed the incidence of these events.

Langmuir monolayers at gas/liquid interfaces provide a rich framework to investigate the interplay between multiscale geometry and mechanics. Monolayer collapse is investigated at a topological and geometric level by building a scale space M from experimental imaging data. We present a general lipid monolayer collapse phase diagram, which shows that wrinkling, folding, crumpling, shear banding, and vesiculation are a continuous set of mechanical states that can be approached by either tuning monolayer composition or temperature.

Background: Rivaroxaban is a direct inhibitor of activated Factor X (FXa), an anti-inflammatory protein exerting a protective effect on the cardiac valve and vascular endothelium. We compare the effect of Warfarin and Rivaroxaban on inflammation biomarkers and their contribution to heart valve calcification progression and renal preservation in a population of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3b - 4.
Methods: This was an observational, multicenter, prospective study enrolling 347 consecutive CKD stage 3b - 4 patients newly diagnosed with AF: 247 were treated with Rivaroxaban and 100 with Warfarin.

Cushing's disease requires accurate diagnosis, careful treatment selection, and long-term management to optimise patient outcomes. The Pituitary Society convened a consensus workshop comprising more than 50 academic researchers and clinical experts to discuss the application of recent evidence to clinical practice. In advance of the virtual meeting, data from 2015 to present about screening and diagnosis; surgery, medical, and radiation therapy; and disease-related and treatment-related complications of Cushing's disease summarised in recorded lectures were reviewed by all participants.

Located at the level of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane, stromal interacting molecule 1 (STIM1) undergoes a complex conformational rearrangement after depletion of ER luminal Ca. Then, STIM1 translocates into discrete ER-plasma membrane (PM) junctions where it directly interacts with and activates plasma membrane Orai1 channels to refill ER with Ca. Furthermore, Ca entry due to Orai1/STIM1 interaction may induce canonical transient receptor potential channel 1 (TRPC1) translocation to the plasma membrane, where it is activated by STIM1.

To date, in personalized medicine approaches, single-cell analyses such as circulating tumour cells (CTC) are able to reveal small structural cell modifications, and therefore can retrieve several biophysical cell properties, such as the cell dimension, the dimensional relationship between the nucleus and the cytoplasm and the optical density of cellular sub-compartments. On this basis, we present in this study a new morphological measurement approach for the detection of vital CTC from pleural washing in individual non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. After a diagnosis of pulmonary malignancy, pleural washing was collected from nine NSCLC patients.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) show an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and mortality. Many factors are implicated in the pathogenesis of CVD in patients with T2DM. Among the factors involved, chronic hyperglycemia and the cluster of CVD risk factors, such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obesity, play a major role.

The glycaemic index (GI) is a food metric that ranks the acute impact of available (digestible) carbohydrates on blood glucose. At present, few countries regulate the inclusion of GI on food labels even though the information may assist consumers to manage blood glucose levels. Australia and New Zealand regulate GI claims as nutrition content claims and also recognize the GI Foundation's certified Low GI trademark as an endorsement.

Palytoxin (PLTX) and its congeners are emerging toxins held responsible for a number of human poisonings following the inhalation of toxic aerosols, skin contact, or the ingestion of contaminated seafood. Despite the strong structural analogies, the relative toxic potencies of PLTX congeners are quite different, making it necessary to isolate them individually in sufficient amounts for toxicological and analytical purposes. Previous studies showed poor PLTX recoveries with a dramatic decrease in PLTX yield throughout each purification step.

Ciguatoxins (CTXs) are polyether marine biotoxins that can cause ciguatera poisoning (CP) after the consumption of fish or invertebrates containing sub ppb levels; concentrations that present a challenge for current extraction and analysis methods. Here, a newly developed and (partly) validated single-day extraction protocol is presented. First, the fish sample is broken-down by enzymatic digestion, followed by extraction and extract clean-up by defatting and two solid-phase extractions.

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic may have a deleterious impact on patients with autoimmune systemic diseases (ASD) due to their deep immune-system alterations.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of symptomatic Covid-19 and its correlations with both organ involvement and ongoing treatments in a large series of Italian ASD patients during the first wave of pandemic.
Methods: Our multicenter telephone 6-week survey included 3,029 unselected ASD patients enrolled at 36 tertiary referral centers of northern, central, and southern Italian macro-areas with different diffusion of the pandemic.

Importance: Juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare form of ALS characterized by age of symptom onset less than 25 years and a variable presentation.
Objective: To identify the genetic variants associated with juvenile ALS.
Design, Setting, And Participants: In this multicenter family-based genetic study, trio whole-exome sequencing was performed to identify the disease-associated gene in a case series of unrelated patients diagnosed with juvenile ALS and severe growth retardation.

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide; however, its impact on health outcomes and adverse effects is not fully understood. The current review aims to establish an update about the benefits of coffee consumption on health outcomes highlighting its side effects, and finally coming up with an attempt to provide some recommendations on its doses. A literature review using the PubMed/Medline database was carried out and the data were summarized by applying a narrative approach using the available evidence based on the literature.

S1P is the final product of sphingolipid metabolism, which interacts with five widely expressed GPCRs (S1P). Increasing numbers of studies have indicated the importance of S1P in various pathophysiological processes. Recently, we have identified a pepducin (compound KRX-725-II) acting as an S1P receptor antagonist.
