Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the survival outcomes of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver cancer who achieved sustained virologic response (SVR) through either direct-acting antivirals (DAA) or interferon (IFN)-based therapy after surgical resection.
  • Results showed that both treatments had a high SVR rate and led to similar reductions in mortality and liver-related complications, regardless of whether patients had cirrhosis or experienced cancer recurrence.
  • The findings suggest that DAA therapy should be recommended for all patients with HCV-related liver cancer following curative surgery, as it is just as effective as IFN-based therapy in improving survival outcomes.

Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a prevalent retinal disease predominantly occurs in Asians that shares some similarities seen in neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Recent large multicenter clinical trials on intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents and photodynamic therapy (PDT) have shed lights on the management of PCV. The Taiwan National Health Insurance had granted limited anti-VEGF agents and PDT for patients with PCV after the approval of required data submission, especially fundus angiography, optical coherence tomography, and visual acuity.

Nonischemic cardiomyopathies (NICMs) are composed of variable disease entities, including primary and secondary cardiomyopathies. Determining the etiology of NICM provides pivotal roles of not only the understanding of the individual pathogenesis, but also the clinical management, such as risk stratification, pharmacological treatment, and intervention therapies. Despite the diverse causes of NICM, these cases mostly require clinical attention owing to progressive myocardial injury, resulting in ventricular dysfunction and heart failure.
