Background: In Myanmar, progress towards malaria elimination has stagnated in some areas requiring deployment of new tools and approaches to accelerate malaria elimination. While there is evidence that networks of community-based malaria workers and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) can reduce malaria transmission in a variety of settings, evidence for the effectiveness of other interventions, such as topical repellents, is limited. Since malaria transmission in Myanmar occurs outdoors, mainly among forest-goers, this study tested the effectiveness of topical repellents in combination with supplemental ITN distribution and strengthened networks of malaria workers.

Introduction: As part of a laboratory strengthening program in Malawi to achieve and maintain International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 15189 accreditation, we intended to mentor selected HIV molecular laboratories to achieve this accreditation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mentorship pivoted to a hybrid model using an Internet-based approach and on-site mentorships. We describe the implementation of this strategy, successes, and challenges.

Background: HIV testing and starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) are pivotal in treating people living with HIV (PLHIV) but sustaining PLHIV on treatment remains challenging. We assessed retention and attrition in community client-led antiretroviral distribution groups (CCLADs) in Uganda and identified positive deviant practices that foster long-term retention.
Methods: Using explanatory mixed methods, we collected longitudinal medical data from 65 health facilities across 12 districts in East Central Uganda.

Background: Before 2018, the use of parallel tuberculosis (TB) reporting systems was resource intensive with duplication of efforts and hence the need to select one that contributed to better TB case notification at the National TB and Leprosy Program (NLTP) in Uganda. We sought to analyse the difference in reporting rates between the two systems in order to improve NTLP TB case notification rates, logistics management, and planning for better health service delivery initiatives.
Methods: We conducted a comparative study to assess TB case notification between the web-based DHIS2 and the district TB supervisor-led health management information system between January 2016 to December 2017.

We conducted a randomized, controlled trial (RCT) to investigate our hypothesis that the interactive chatbot, Vitalk, is more effective in improving mental wellbeing and resilience outcomes of health workers in Malawi than the passive use of Internet resources. For our 2-arm, 8-week, parallel RCT (ISRCTN Registry: trial ID ISRCTN16378480), we recruited participants from 8 professional cadres from public and private healthcare facilities. The treatment arm used Vitalk; the control arm received links to Internet resources.

Background: Since 2003, the government of Ethiopia has trained and deployed more than 42,000 Health Extension Workers across the country to provide primary healthcare services. Background: Health facility-based directly observed therapy (HF DOT) is the main strategy for the management of patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR TB) in Uganda, however, this still yields sub-optimal treatment outcomes. We set out to assess the effectiveness of community-based directly observed therapy (CB DOT) for the treatment of DR TB in Uganda.
Methods: Using a previously developed patient-centered model for CB DOT, we assigned community health workers (CHWs) as primary caregivers to patients diagnosed with DR TB.

The global pandemic situation of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has been ongoing for more than 2 years with the emergence of different variants. With the rapid development of vaccines, countries including Myanmar rolled out vaccination programs to reduce the morbidity and mortality due to COVID-19 with the ultimate goal to end the pandemic. This study seeks to explore the acceptance of the general adult population towards the COVID-19 vaccines administered by the Ministry of Health, and barriers to vaccine acceptance.

Introduction: The Uganda Ministry of Health recommends facility- and community-based differentiated antiretroviral therapy (DART) models to support person-centred care for eligible clients receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). Healthcare workers assess client eligibility for one of six DART models upon initial enrolment; however, client circumstances evolve, and their preferences are not routinely adjusted. We developed a tool to understand the proportion of clients accessing preferred DART models and compared the outcomes of clients accessing preferred DART models to the outcomes of clients not receiving preferred DART models.

This study examines the biopsychosocial predictors of drug use and dependence among Filipino drug users enrolled in community-based drug rehabilitation. Data from 925 clients revealed that the severity of drug use, cigarette and alcohol use, recovery skills, and mental health problems predict drug dependence. Family support, life skills, and psychological well-being are indirect predictors of severity of use.

We aimed to elucidate the specific roles and responsibilities of expert clients in service delivery among adolescents living with HIV in Eswatini, and to provide recommendations for enhancing adolescent service provision among expert clients and similar lay health workers throughout low- and middle-income countries. An exploratory qualitative descriptive methodology using conventional content analysis was used to meet our study aims. We recruited 20 expert clients and 12 key informants (programme managers, programme coordinators and nurses) to participate in semi-structured interviews, and we arranged four focus group discussions among adolescents living with HIV with seven to ten participants per focus group.

The World Health Organization recommends the scale-up of tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) for persons at risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB) as a key component to end the global TB epidemic. We sought to determine the feasibility of integrating testing for latent TB infection (LTBI) using interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) into the provision of TPT in a resource-limited high TB burden setting. We conducted a parallel convergent mixed methods study at four tertiary referral hospitals.

Introduction: To address maternal iron-deficiency anemia and low uptake of iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) among antenatal care (ANC) clinic attendees in East-Central Uganda, the Anemia Implementation Science Initiative embedded enhanced quality improvement (QI) activities into an integrated health project utilizing QI methodologies.
Methods: To address 2 bottlenecks of stock-outs and inadequate health education for pregnant women during ANC, an enhanced QI intervention was implemented from July 2019 to September 2020 in 2 districts. We conducted a mixed-methods effectiveness quasi-experimental study to assess whether the intervention increased the availability of IFAS in the intervention districts.
