Background: Individuals with anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs) and subclinical inflammatory changes in joints are at high risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment strategies to intercept this pre-stage clinical disease remain to be developed. We aimed to assess whether 6-month treatment with abatacept improves inflammation in preclinical rheumatoid arthritis.

Introduction: Difficult intubation is the situation when a skilled anesthetist has difficulties to manage airway using face mask, laryngoscopy, supraglottic device, tracheal intubation, surgery. Videolaryngoscope and flexible fibroscope (FFS) represent valid alternatives for difficult airway management, with some limitations. However, literature lacks of studies about the efficacy of the combined use of videolaryngoscope and FFS.

Video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy is the treatment of choice for early-stage lung cancer. It is safe and effective compared to open surgery, as demonstrated by a large body of scientific evidence over the last few decades. VATS lobectomy's evolution was driven by the need to decrease post-operative pain by reducing the extent of surgical accesses, maintaining the same oncological efficacy of open lobectomy with less invasiveness.

The effectiveness of clear aligners in correcting malocclusions is closely linked to the properties of the materials used to make them. The polymers used in the manufacture of clear aligners have well-established properties. However, the process of manufacturing clear aligners, known as thermoforming, involves thermal and mechanical shocks that may alter these properties.

Background: The initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic posed a real need for clinicians to identify patients at risk of poor prognosis as soon as possible after hospital admission.
Aims: The study aimed to assess the role of baseline anamnestic information, clinical parameters, instrumental examination, and serum biomarkers in predicting adverse outcomes of COVID-19 in a hospital setting of Internal Medicine.
Methods: Fifty-two inpatients consecutively admitted to the Unit of Internal Medicine "Baccelli," Azienda Ospedaliero - Universitaria Policlinico of Bari (February 1 - May 31, 2021) due to confirmed COVID-19 were grouped into two categories based on the specific outcome: good prognosis (n=44), patients discharged at home after the acute phase of the infection; poor prognosis, a composite outcome of deaths and intensive care requirements (n=8).

Background: An observational study involving patients recovered from COVID-19 was conducted in order to evaluate the presence/absence of vein wall thickness increasing, according to the severity of pulmonary involvement quantified with a CT-scoring system.
Methods: The venous wall thickness (VWT) of 31 patients (23 males and 8 females) with COVID 19 previously admitted to Federico II University Hospital of Naples was evaluated through ultrasound measurement of the common femoral Vein 1 cm proximal to the saphenous-femoral junction and the popliteal Vein 1 cm distal to the confluence of gemellary veins. Measurements were taken with an automated tool to avoid human error.

The literature features limited evidence on the natural history of the cystic dilatation of the ventriculus terminalis (CDVT) and its response to treatment. The goal of this study is to ascertain which impact the revised operative classification of CDVT had on the management of patients diagnosed over the past 10 years.Ten new clinical articles presenting a total of 30 cases of CDVT were identified and included for qualitative analysis.

Objective: In recent years, Candida spondylodiscitis has represented an increasingly emerging disease in clinical practice. This condition requires long-term antibiotic therapy and sometimes surgical treatments. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the epidemiology, clinical and radiological aspects, treatment protocols, and outcomes of Candida-mediated vertebral osteomyelitis.

The introduction of US-guided venipuncture in clinical practice has greatly facilitated the surgical approach to patients with hydrocephalus. Especially in infants and children, where it results in a lower technical failure rate, less time and fewer complications than the traditional referral method, this technique has become a clinical protocol. This dynamic or "real time" technique has become one of the anesthetist's tools.

One of the main challenges of newborn screening programs, which screen for inherited metabolic disorders, is cutting down on false positives (FPs) in order to avoid family stresses, additional analyses, and unnecessary costs. False positives are partly caused by an insubstantial number of robust biomarkers in evaluations. Another challenge is how to distinguish between diseases which share the same primary marker and for which secondary biomarkers are just as highly desirable.

Background: Intracranial mesenchymal tumors are a rare type of neoplasm (0.3% of all soft tissue tumors) characterized by a fusion of a family gene (usually , rarely ) to family genes (, and ) with a slow-growing and favorable prognosis. Mesenchymal tumors are most frequently localized in the subcutaneous tissue (typically in the limbs and hands) of young adults and have rarely been diagnosed in the central nervous system.

The authors report a singular case of post-operative exogenous fungal endophthalmitis caused by a non-pathogenic fungal agent: . A 75-year-old Caucasian woman with post-penetrating keratoplasty fungal endophthalmitis due to a nonpathogenic resistant to the current azoles anti-fungal agents, was treated with subtotal vitrectomy, intravitreal injection, and systemic voriconazole therapy. Complete resolution of the endophthalmitis occurred after two subsequent intravitreal injections and a 2-month-long systemic delivery of voriconazole.

Background: Interleukin-1 blockade with anakinra reduces high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels and prevents heart failure (HF) events after ST-segment myocardial infarction (STEMI). Sex-based differences in STEMI patients have been reported, but no data are available regarding response to anakinra.
Methods: We analyzed the systemic inflammation and composite end-point of new-onset HF or death in women and men with STEMI treated with anakinra from three different Virginia Commonwealth University Anakinra Response Trial (VCUART) randomized clinical trials.

Background: Type 2 sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitors (SGLT2i) are among the main therapeutic options for patients with chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of SGLT2i on the echocardiographic parameters of left (LV) and right (RV) ventricular function among outpatients with a long history of HFrEF, in optimized therapy.
Methods: We evaluated consecutive patients affected by HFrEF in whom the SGLT2i therapy was prescribed.

The leverage of digital facilities in medicine for disease diagnosis, monitoring, and medical history recording has become increasingly pivotal. However, the advancement of these technologies poses a significant challenge regarding data privacy, given the highly sensitive nature of medical information. In this context, the application of Blockchain technology, a digital system where information is stored in blocks and each block is linked to the one before, has the potential to enhance existing technologies through its exceptional security and transparency.

Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the smear layer and debris removal and antimicrobial activity of two dual-action irrigating solutions for continuous chelation (Triton; Brasseler, Savannah, USA and Dual Rinse HEDP; Medcem GmbH, Weinfelden, Switzerland) with a dual step irrigation protocol with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) followed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA).
Methods: Thirty single-rooted single-canal teeth were divided into three groups (n=10) and irrigated with Triton, Dual Rinse HEDP mixed with 6% NaOCl and 6% NaOCl/17% EDTA. The teeth were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to assess the canal wall cleanliness.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of developing venous thromboembolic events, which have a considerable impact on morbidity and mortality. Chronic inflammation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of thrombotic events in patients with IBD. However, many unresolved questions remain, particularly regarding the mechanisms that determine the persistent inflammatory state independent of disease activity.
