Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition substantially impacting patients' quality of life; the pathogenesis remains unclear, and treatment is complex and not yet standardized. Observational data are increasingly being used to evaluate therapeutics in "real-life" interventions, and the development of e-cohorts is offering new tools for epidemiological studies at the population level.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and treatment history of HS participants in the Community of Patients for Research (ComPaRe) cohort and to compare these to other cohorts.

Shear wave cardiovascular MR elastography using intrinsic cardiac motion for transducer-free non-invasive evaluation of myocardial shear wave velocity.

Changes in myocardial stiffness may represent a valuable biomarker for early tissue injury or adverse remodeling. In this study, we developed and validated a novel transducer-free magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) approach for quantifying myocardial biomechanics using aortic valve closure-induced shear waves. Using motion-sensitized two-dimensional pencil beams, septal shear waves were imaged at high temporal resolution.

Nutritional status and anxious and depressive symptoms in anorexia nervosa: a prospective study.

The interweaving of malnutrition and symptoms of anxiety and depression in anorexia Nervosa (AN) is mentioned without any consensus regarding the course of anxious-depressive symptoms in relation to nutritional status in the course of treatment of patients with AN. The objectives of the current study in a large sample of AN inpatients were to assess the relationships between anxiety and depression symptoms and nutritional status both over the course of inpatient treatment and at discharge. 222 consecutive inpatients with AN (DSM-IV TR) were assessed (entrance and discharge) for duration of illness, psychiatric treatments, sociodemographic data and with psychometric scales for different psychopathological symptoms [depressive (BDI), anxiety and depressive (HAD scale), obsessive-compulsive (MOCI) and social phobia (LSAS fear score)].

Development of SARA , a New Video-Based Tool for the Assessment of Ataxia at Home.

Background: Clinical scales such as the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) cannot be used to study ataxia at home or to assess daily fluctuations. The objective of the current study was to develop a video-based instrument, SARA , for measuring ataxia severity easily and independently at home.

Methods: Based on feasibility of self-application, we selected 5 SARA items (gait, stance, speech, nose-finger test, fast alternating hand movements) for SARA (range, 0-28).

Background: Changes in brain stiffness can be an important biomarker for neurological disease. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) quantifies tissue stiffness, but the results vary between acquisition and reconstruction methods.

Purpose: To measure MRE repeatability and estimate the effect of different reconstruction methods and varying data quality on estimated brain stiffness.

Photoactivated Nanoscale Temperature Gradient Detection Using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy as a Direct Nanothermometry Method.

Nanoparticle-mediated thermal treatments have demonstrated high efficacy and versatility as a local anticancer strategy beyond traditional global hyperthermia. Nanoparticles act as heating generators that can trigger therapeutic responses at both the cell and tissue level. In some cases, treatment happens in the absence of a global temperature rise, damaging the tumor cells even more selectively than other nanotherapeutic strategies.

Mass-spectrometry analysis of the human pineal proteome during night and day and in autism.

The human pineal gland regulates day-night dynamics of multiple physiological processes, especially through the secretion of melatonin. Using mass-spectrometry-based proteomics and dedicated analysis tools, we identify proteins in the human pineal gland and analyze systematically their variation throughout the day and compare these changes in the pineal proteome between control specimens and donors diagnosed with autism. Results reveal diverse regulated clusters of proteins with, among others, catabolic carbohydrate process and cytoplasmic membrane-bounded vesicle-related proteins differing between day and night and/or control versus autism pineal glands.

Association between Baseline Cortisol Serum Concentrations and the Effect of Prophylactic Hydrocortisone in Extremely Preterm Infants.

Objective: To define nomograms of serum cortisol values before 24 hours of postnatal life for extremely preterm infants and determine whether baseline cortisol values affect the benefit/risk ratio of prophylactic hydrocortisone to improve survival without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).

Study Design: We performed a predefined secondary analysis of the multicenter randomized controlled PREMILOC trial that included inborn infants delivered before 28 weeks of gestation. Nomograms of baseline serum cortisol values measured in 325 enrolled patients were determined for male and female neonates and correlated to perinatal events.

Prenatal biochemical diagnosis of two forms of congenital diarrheal disorders (congenital chloride diarrhea and congenital sodium diarrhea): A series of 12 cases.

Objective: Congenital diarrheal disorders (CDDs) are a group of rare diseases among which some present as inherited disorders of intestinal electrolyte transportation: congenital chloride diarrhea (CCD) and congenital sodium diarrhea (CSD) with prenatal manifestations, mainly polyhydramnios, leading to premature delivery. Frequency and perturbations of various peripheral blood cell populations before and after eculizumab treatment in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.

While red blood cells (RBCs) and granulocytes have been more studied, platelets and reticulocytes are not commonly used in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) flow-cytometry and less is known about susceptibility to complement-mediated destruction and effects of anti-complement therapy on these populations. We performed flow-cytometry of RBCs and granulocytes in 90 PNH patients and of platelets and reticulocytes in a subgroup (N = 36), to unveil perturbations of these populations during PNH disease course before and after anti-complement treatment. Inhibition of macrophage proliferation dominates plaque regression in response to cholesterol lowering.

Statins induce plaque regression characterized by reduced macrophage content in humans, but the underlying mechanisms remain speculative. Studying the translational APOE*3-Leiden.CETP mouse model with a humanized lipoprotein metabolism, we find that systemic cholesterol lowering by oral atorvastatin or dietary restriction inhibits monocyte infiltration, and reverses macrophage accumulation in atherosclerotic plaques.

New Concept of Power Generation Using TEGs: Thermal Modeling, Parametric Analysis, and Case Study.

In this manuscript, an innovative concept of producing power from a thermoelectric generator (TEG) is evaluated. This concept takes advantage of using the exhaust airflow of all-air heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and sun irradiation. For the first step, a parametric analysis of power generation from TEGs for different practical configurations is performed.

Implementation of a Medical Ethics Course in Undergraduate Dental Education and Assessment of Knowledge and Attitudes.

Objectives: A medical ethics course was launched in 2012 in a French University Dental School. We compared knowledge and attitudes, before and after implementation of that course. The aim of this study was to compare students who received an ethics course (third year) to those who did not have such training, however, most of them did have some clinical traineeship.

Nonredundant Roles of Platelet Glycoprotein VI and Integrin αIIbβ3 in Fibrin-Mediated Microthrombus Formation.

Objective: Fibrin is considered to strengthen thrombus formation via integrin αIIbβ3, but recent findings indicate that fibrin can also act as ligand for platelet glycoprotein VI. Approach and Results: To investigate the thrombus-forming potential of fibrin and the roles of platelet receptors herein, we generated a range of immobilized fibrin surfaces, some of which were cross-linked with factor XIIIa and contained VWF-BP (von Willebrand factor-binding peptide). Multicolor microfluidics assays with whole-blood flowed at high shear rate (1000 s) indicated that the fibrin surfaces, regardless of the presence of factor XIIIa or VWF-BP, supported platelet adhesion and activation (P-selectin expression), but only microthrombi were formed consisting of bilayers of platelets.

Monogenic diabetes characteristics in a transnational multicenter study from Mediterranean countries.

Background: Diagnosis of monogenic diabetes has important clinical implications for treatment and health expenditure. However, its prevalence remains to be specified in many countries, particularly from South Europe, North Africa and Middle-East, where non-autoimmune diabetes in young adults is increasing dramatically.

Aims: To identify cases of monogenic diabetes in young adults from Mediterranean countries and assess the specificities between countries.

Introduction: Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) efficiently eliminates fluconazole. However, the routes of elimination were not clarified. Adsorption of fluconazole by filters is a pending question.

Improved stenosis outcome in stroke-free sickle cell anemia children after transplantation compared to chronic transfusion.

We report here the 3-year stenosis outcome in 60 stroke-free children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) and an abnormal transcranial Doppler history, enrolled in the DREPAGREFFE trial, which compared stem cell transplantation (SCT) with standard-care (chronic transfusion for 1-year minimum). Twenty-eight patients with matched sibling donors were transplanted, while 32 remained on standard-care. Stenosis scores were calculated after performing cerebral/cervical 3D time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography.

Endoscopic Endonasal Pituitary Surgery For Nonfunctioning Pituitary Adenomas: Long-Term Outcomes and Management of Recurrent Tumors.

Risk stratification scores for patients with acute heart failure in the Emergency Department: A systematic review.

Aims: This study aimed to systematically identify and summarise all risk scores evaluated in the emergency department setting to stratify acute heart failure patients.

Methods And Results: A systematic review of PubMed and Web of Science was conducted including all multicentre studies reporting the use of risk predictive models in emergency department acute heart failure patients. Exclusion criteria were: (a) non-original articles; (b) prognostic models without predictive purposes; and (c) risk models without consecutive patient inclusion or exclusively tested in patients admitted to a hospital ward.
