The primary objective was to investigate the association between partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO 2 ) change after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) initiation and neurologic outcome in neonates treated for respiratory failure. A retrospective analysis of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) database including newborns supported by ECMO for respiratory indication during 2015-2020. The closest Pre-ECMO (Pre-ECMO PaCO 2 ) and at 24 hours after ECMO initiation (H24 PaCO 2 ) PaCO 2 values allowed to calculate the relative change in PaCO 2 (Rel Δ PaCO 2 = [H24 PaCO 2 - Pre-ECMO PaCO 2 ]/Pre-ECMO PaCO 2 ).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how cerebral autoregulation (CA) is affected in children undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), particularly focusing on variations in arterial CO2 (PaCO) and O2 (PaO) tensions, which are linked to neurological outcomes and mortality.
  • Data was retrospectively analyzed from 30 children treated with ECMO in a pediatric intensive care unit, examining correlations between regional cerebral oxygen saturation, mean arterial blood pressure, and CA through various calculated indices.
  • Results showed the highest cerebral oxygenation reactivity index (COx) on the first day of ECMO, with significant but weak correlations between COx, PaCO, and the limits of

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes self-limiting acute hepatitis in humans that can eventually result in acute liver failures or progress to chronic infections. While in tropical and sub-tropical areas, HEV infections are associated with important waterborne epidemics, in Northern countries, HEV infections are autochthonous with a zoonotic origin. In the past decade, it has become clear that certain HEV genotypes are zoonotic and that swine, and more generally Suidae, are the main reservoir.

In Corsica, extensive pig breeding systems allow frequent interactions between wild boars and domestic pigs, which are suspected to act as reservoirs of several zoonotic diseases including hepatitis E virus (HEV). In this context, 370 sera and 166 liver samples were collected from phenotypically characterized as pure or hybrid wild boars, between 2009 and 2012. In addition, serum and liver from 208 domestic pigs belonging to 30 farms were collected at the abattoir during the end of 2013.

Megakaryopoiesis is a 2-step differentiation process, regulated by thrombopoietin (TPO), on binding to its cognate receptor myeloproliferative leukemia (MPL). This receptor associates with intracytoplasmic tyrosine kinases, essentially janus kinase 2 (JAK2), which regulates MPL stability and cell-surface expression, and mediates TPO-induced signal transduction. We demonstrate that JAK2 and MPL mediate TPO-induced proliferation arrest and megakaryocytic differentiation of the human megakaryoblastic leukemia cell line UT7-MPL.

Department of Urology, Saint-Louis Hospital, APHP, Paris, France; Department of Urology, Jewish General Hospital and Montreal General Hospital, McGill University, Montreal, Canada; INSERM 955, Team 7, University Paris 12, Créteil, France. Electronic address:

Context: Pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) in prostate cancer is the most effective method for detecting lymph node metastases. However, a decline in the rate of PLND during radical prostatectomy (RP) has been noted. This is likely the result of prostate cancer stage migration in the prostate-specific antigen-screening era, and the introduction of minimally invasive approaches such as robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).

Early type III endoleak with an Endurant endograft.

J Vasc Surg

December 2010

Department of Vascular Surgery, Hopital Henri-Mondor, APHP, University Paris 12, Créteil, France.

We report the case of an 81-year-old man who presented with an intraoperative type III endoleak after treatment with an Endurant endograft for a 60-mm abdominal aortic aneurysm. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a type III endoleak reported with this new device. It was most likely due to a tear in the polyester graft, the cause of which remains speculative.

Colorectal cancer in France.

Eur J Health Econ

January 2010

Paris Health Economics and Health Services Research Unit, AP-HP, LIC EA 4393, University Paris 12, Paris, France.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) presents a substantial health burden in France, as the third cause of new cancer cases after breast and prostate cancers and the second cancer mortality cause representing nearly 12% of cancer deaths and almost 10% of annual life year loss due to cancer. Its prognosis has dramatically improved since the 1970s due to earlier diagnosis and an increase in the number of cases eligible for surgery. The first cancer plan implemented for the period 2003-2006 led to further improvements via, amongst others, implementing a national cancer institute (INCA), developing research, improving the quality of care and facilitating access to innovative treatments.

Composite tissue allotransplantations (CTA), were introduced with the first successful hand transplantation and are now a part of reconstructive surgery armamentarium. These reconstructive procedures for non life-threatening indications remain rare due to adverse effects of the associated lifelong immunosuppressive therapy. Indeed, despite recent progress, immunosuppressive therapies remain non-specific to the type of donor and still bear significant risks of serious side effects.
