Solid mixtures of ammonia and water, the so-called ammonia hydrates, are thought to be major components of solar and extra-solar icy planets. We present here a thorough characterization of the recently reported high pressure ()-temperature () phase VII of ammonia monohydrate (AMH) using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments in the ranges 4-10 GPa, 450-600 K. Our results show that AMH-VII exhibits common structural features with the disordered ionico-molecular alloy (DIMA) phase, stable above 7.

This paper reports the results obtained for a distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) exposed to different fluences of proton particles: 10, 10 and 10 p/cm. Dedicated laboratory setups were developed to assess the irradiation-induced changes in this device. Multiple parameters defining the QCL performances were investigated prior to and following each irradiation step: (i) voltage-driving current; (ii) emitted optical power-driving current; (iii) central emitting wavelength-driving current; (iv) emitted spectrum-driving current; (v) transversal mode structure-driving current, maintaining the system operating temperature at 20 °C.

Lymph node metastases in non-well differentiated thyroid cancer (non-WDTC) are common, both in the central compartment (levels VI and VII) and in the lateral neck (Levels II to V). Nodal metastases negatively affect prognosis and should be treated to maximize locoregional control while minimizing morbidity. In non-WDTC, the rate of nodal involvement is variable and depends on the histology of the tumor.

Introduction: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains the leading cause of infections treated in the intensive care units (ICU). In a personalised care approach, we hypothesise that the duration of treatment of VAP can be reduced in function of the response to treatment.

Methods And Analysis: The Antimicrobial Stewardship for Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in Intensive Care (ASPIC) trial is a pragmatic national multicentre, phase III, non-inferiority, comparative randomised (1:1) single-blinded clinical trial.

Asthma, rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis (AD) are interrelated clinical phenotypes that partly overlap in the human interactome. The concept of "one-airway-one-disease," coined over 20 years ago, is a simplistic approach of the links between upper- and lower-airway allergic diseases. With new data, it is time to reassess the concept.

Polyphyllin G, a pennogenyl saponin extracted from Paris polyphylla, has been shown to possess antitumor effects. In this study, we demonstrated that doxycycline, an antibiotic medicine, could significantly enhance the sensitivities of osteosarcoma cell lines to polyphyllin G. As the cells were pretreated with doxycycline at non-toxic concentrations and then co-exposed to polyphyllin G, this combination could induce a rapid cell death distinct from apoptosis.

Plants respond to oxygen deprivation by activating the expression of a set of hypoxia-responsive genes (HRGs). The master regulator of this process is a small group of transcription factors belonging to group VII of the ethylene response factors (ERF-VIIs). ERF-VIIs are highly unstable under aerobic conditions due to the continuous oxidation of their characteristic Cys residue at the N terminus by plant cysteine oxidases (PCOs).

Biomolecular Medicine, Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Huddinge, Sweden.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising carriers for the delivery of a variety of chemical and biological drugs. However, their efficacy is limited by the lack of cellular specificity. Available methods to improve the tissue specificity of EVs predominantly rely on surface display of proteins and peptides, largely overlooking the dense glycocalyx that constitutes the outermost layer of EVs.

Article Synopsis
  • The "smoking paradox" refers to lower mortality rates in smokers among STEMI patients, particularly in the context of modern primary PCI protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A large retrospective study revealed that among 16,083 STEMI patients, active smokers had better postprocedural blood flow and lower mortality rates compared to both non-smokers and previous smokers.
  • The findings suggest that despite initial challenges in treatment, active smoking was linked to improved heart health outcomes in this patient population, indicating the need for further investigation into this unexpected relationship.
