Novel hydrophobized hyaluronan (HA) derivatives, containing ω-phenylalkanoic acids (ω-PAA, 4-phenylbutyric acid, 6-phenylhexanoic, 8-phenyloctanoic or 11-tolylundecanoic acids) were prepared by esterification. Mixed anhydrides obtained after reaction of the carboxyl acid moiety and benzoyl chloride were found to be active acylating agents, affording hydrophobized HA in good yield and under mild conditions. The reactivity of the aromatic fatty acids towards esterification has decreased with the increasing length of the aliphatic spacer between the aromatic substituent and carboxylic acid moiety.

Objective: To evaluate the intensity of the fetal inflammatory response, characterized by umbilical cord blood IL-6 levels, and neonatal outcome in the preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) pregnancies using the pulsatile fetal splenic vein flow pattern.

Methods: Women with singleton pregnancies complicated by PPROM at a gestational age between 24 + 0 and 36 + 6 weeks were included in the study. Doppler evaluation of the fetal splenic vein flow was performed.

Exposure to iodomethane and dichloromethane associated with a confusional state.

Neurotoxicology

June 2011

Department of Neurology, Pardubice Regional Hospital, Inc., Faculty of Health Studies, University Pardubice, Pardubice, Czech Republic.

Dichloromethane and iodomethane are colorless relatively volatile liquids, which are used as solvents in chemical manufacturing processes. The major route of exposure is via inhalation and to a lesser extent through the skin and digestive tract. Both substances are characterized by significant neurotoxic effects.

A set of 1160 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values evaluating effect of substitution on the antimycobacterial activity of the previously published 2-(substituted benzyl)sulfanyl benzimidazoles, benzoxazoles, and benzothiazoles has been analyzed by the methods of multidimensional analysis (exploratory analysis, 2D-nonlinear mapping (NLM), principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA), multiple linear regression (MLR)). The antimycobacterial activity of 2-(subst. benzyl)sulfanyl derivatives of benzimidazole (BIM), 5-methylbenzimidazole (5-Me-BIM), benzoxazole (BOZ), and benzothiazole (BTZ) increased in the order of BTZ View Article and Find Full Text PDF

A critical comparison of the various PCA methods on the absorbance matrix data concerning the complexation equilibria between SNAZOXS and Cd(2+), Co(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+) and Zn(2+) or Naphtylazoxine 6S and Cd(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+) and Zn(2+) at 25 degrees C is performed. The number of complex species in a complex-forming equilibria mixture is the first important step for further qualitative and quantitative analysis in all forms of spectral data treatment. Therefore, the accuracy of the nine selected index functions for the prediction of the number of light-absorbing components that contribute to a set of spectra is critically tested using the principal component PCA algorithm INDICES in S-Plus software.

In-situ measurement of reversible photodarkening in ion-conducting chalcohalide glass.

Opt Express

University Pardubice, Faculty of Chemical Technology, Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Research Centre, Legion's sq. 565, 53210 Pardubice, Czech Republic.

We report the kinetics of below band-gap light induced photodarkening in (80-x)GeS(2)-20Ga(2)S(3)-xAgI (x = 0 and 20 mol %) bulk chalcogenide glasses by measuring the time evolution of transmission spectra at every 10 milliseconds. The results prove clearly the enhancement of photosensivity upon doping of AgI compound in glasses. It is interesting to find that PD observed in AgI-doped glass totally disappears two hours later after the laser exposing even at room temperature.

Reconstruction of an orbital floor fracture in a 4-year-old child.

Acta Medica (Hradec Kralove)

June 2009

Regional Hospital Pardubice, University Pardubice, Faculty of Medical Studies, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Czech Republic.

The authors present a case of a 4-year-old girl with an orbital floor fracture. During surgery absorbable collagenous mesh (Pelvicol) was placed between the bone wall and the orbital periosteum. Pelvicol was selected as a natural xenogeneic tissue (porcine dermis) ready for first use in the reconstruction of the orbital floor fracture.

Transformation in the PC-aided biochemical data analysis.

Clin Chem Lab Med

June 2000

Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemical Technology, University Pardubice, Czech Republic.

Data transformations enable expression of original data in a new scale, more suitable for data analysis. In computer-aided interactive analysis of biochemical and clinical data an exploratory data analysis often finds that the sample distribution is systematically skewed or does not accept a sample homogeneity. Under such circumstances the original data should be transformed.
