Sodium benzoate (E211) and potassium sorbate (E202) are two preservatives widely used alone or in combination in the food industry in Algeria. This study aims to estimate the dietary exposure of children and adolescents to these substances in Oran Province (Algeria) and to assess the risks incurred in consuming these two preservatives. For this, a total of 116 commercial food samples were analyzed for potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate content by HPLC, and a survey was carried out on 250 children and 765 adolescents using a consumption frequency questionnaire as the method.

On murine N2a cells, 7-ketocholesterol induced an oxiapotophagic mode of cell death characterized by oxidative stress (reactive oxygen species overproduction on whole cells and at the mitochondrial level; lipid peroxidation), apoptosis induction (caspase-9, -3 and -7 cleavage, PARP degradation) and autophagy (increased ratio LC3-II / LC3-I). Excess lipid intake can trigger liver lipid accumulation and oxidative responses, which can lead to metabolic disturbances and contribute to hepatic steatosis and obesity and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.   • This study is the first to assess the cancer risk associated with 16 PAHs in contaminated soil using various exposure pathways (ingestion, inhalation, dermal) and found that cancer risk values are near the upper limit of acceptable levels for both adults and children.

Hemorrhagic manifestations during COVID-19 infections are increasingly described in the literature. We report the first case of spontaneous subcapsular hematoma of the liver revealing a COVID-19 infection in a 44-year-old woman with no underlying health condition history, a computerized tomography evaluation showed an aspect of lung ground-glass opacities, with moderate impairment estimated at about 20%. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction confirmed the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection.

From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution.
