The study evaluated the application of a novel high-pressure microbial inactivation method combining dense carbon dioxide with modified atmosphere packaging on organic fresh-cut squash (Cucurbita moschata). Approximately 4 g or 32 g of squash was packed in plastic pouches filled with CO to test two different gas-to-product ratios and treated with the high-pressure method at previously optimized process conditions (45 °C, 6.0 MPa and 40 min).

This study investigates the synthesis of corn starch nanocrystals (SNCs) via sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Esterification of oleic acid (OA) with SNCs was carried out using Maghnite-H as a catalyst, a non-polluting, eco-friendly proton-exchanged montmorillonite-based green catalyst suitable for various chemical processes. Optimization of synthesis parameters, including reaction temperature, duration, and catalyst quantity, was conducted using response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design incorporating three factors and three levels.

Advanced control strategy for AC microgrids: a hybrid ANN-based adaptive PI controller with droop control and virtual impedance technique.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Diagnostics of Electrical Equipment, Institute of Electrodynamics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Beresteyskiy, 56, Kyiv-57, Kyiv, 03680, Ukraine.

In this paper, an improved voltage control strategy for microgrids (MG) is proposed, using an artificial neural network (ANN)-based adaptive proportional-integral (PI) controller combined with droop control and virtual impedance techniques (VIT). The control strategy is developed to improve voltage control, power sharing and total harmonic distortion (THD) reduction in the MG systems with renewable and distributed generation (DG) sources. The VIT is used to decouple active and reactive power, reduce negative power interactions between DG's and improve the robustness of the system under varying load and generation conditions.

In this study, we systematically explored the stability and isomerism of neutral and dehydrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in various charge states, focusing on anthracene, acridine, and phenazine. Our findings highlight key aspects that deepen the understanding of these molecules' reactivity and stability, relevant in both laboratory and astrophysical contexts. Structural symmetry and the presence of nitrogen atoms significantly impact PAH stability and reactivity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated antibiotic resistance in bacteria from three wastewater treatment plants (WTP) to understand how they contribute to the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR).
  • Water samples were analyzed for antibiotic residues, and 88 Gram-negative bacilli were tested for resistance to 18 beta-lactam antibiotics, using advanced methods like HPLC and the VITEK-2 system.
  • Results showed that natural lagoons had the highest levels of ESBL-producing bacteria, with Klebsiella pneumoniae as the most common isolate, indicating that these environments could facilitate the development of antibiotic resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) continues to be a major health challenge globally, even with improved treatment options.
  • This study evaluated the impact of empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor typically used for managing type 2 diabetes, on heart function in ACS patients by analyzing data from four randomized controlled trials with a total of 701 participants.
  • Results showed that empagliflozin significantly improved certain left cardiac parameters, like reducing left ventricular end-systolic volume and mass, although it did not significantly change left ventricular ejection fraction or end-diastolic volume, indicating its potential as a complementary treatment in ACS cases.

Improvement of human performance in healthcare systems by taking into account physician behavior.

J Health Organ Manag

August 2024

Department of Maintenance in Instrumentation, Lab of Industrial Production and Maintenance Engineering, Institute of Maintenance and Industrial Safety, University of Oran 2 Mohamed Ben Ahmed, Oran, Algeria.

Purpose: Efficiency standards, similar to industrial measures like overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), are being used in healthcare systems more and more. Performance indicator models applied to machines assume a constant completion time. However, for human resources, the completion time of a task may vary depending on the stress experienced.

This study evaluated the reliability of the emulsified liquid membrane (ELM) extraction technique for recovering and separating metals, focusing on Nickel (Ni(II)) and Samarium (Sm(III)), both used in electrochemical devices. Key contributions include determining optimal conditions for creating a stable water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. The optimal conditions were found to be a 5-minute emulsification time, 4 wt.

Background & Objectives: Rigid ring and Flexible band are techniques used to repair tricuspid valve regurgitation. The comparison between both techniques' effectiveness is controversial in the literature. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the safety and efficacy of rigid ring versus flexible band for tricuspid valve repair in patients with tricuspid valve regurgitation.

December 2023

Biology of Development and Differentiation Laboratory, Oran 1 University, Ahmed Ben Bella, Department of Biology, Faculty of Nature and Life sciences.

Background: Breast phyllodes tumors (BPT) have variable malignant potential, their histological classification remains insufficient for an accurate diagnosis.

Objectives: We attempted to investigate CD10 (Cluster of differentiation 10) and EGFR (Epidermal growth factor receptor) expression in BPT in order to highlight their diagnostic and prognostic values.

Methods: Eight patients with BPT are recruited from January 2014 to December 2020 and immunohistochemical assessment of CD10 and EGFR is realized.

Introduction: Pharmacogenetic markers, such as the ATP Binding Cassette (ABCB1) and cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A5 enzymes, play a crucial role in personalized medicine by influencing drug efficacy and toxicity based on individuals' or populations' genetic variations. This study aims to investigate the genetic polymorphisms of CYP3A5 (rs776746) and ABCB1 (rs1045642) in the West Algerian population and compare the genotypes and allelic distributions with those of various ethnic groups.

Methods: The study involved 472 unrelated healthy subjects from the Western Algerian population.

Article Synopsis
  • - Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) face a greater risk of acute myocardial infarction (MI), and the study evaluates the effects of the diabetes medication empagliflozin on cardiac outcomes in these patients post-MI.
  • - The meta-analysis included five studies with 751 patients and found that empagliflozin improved left ventricular ejection fraction and volumes, indicating better heart function, but did not significantly affect markers for heart failure or blood sugar control.
  • - Despite improvements in some echocardiographic measures, empagliflozin did not show benefits in preventing heart failure hospitalizations or reducing mortality in diabetic patients after an acute MI.
