Autophagy is a vital cellular pathway in eukaryotic cells, including neurons, where it plays significant roles in neurodevelopment and maintenance. A crucial step in autophagy is the formation of the class III phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase complex 1 (PI3KC3-C1), which is essential for initiating autophagosome biogenesis. Beclin 1 is the key component of PI3KC3-C1, and its interactors have been reported to affect autophagy.

Design of asymmetric electrolytes for aqueous zinc batteries.

Commun Chem

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, 83 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong, 999077, P. R. China.

Aqueous Zn batteries are gaining increasing research attention in the energy storage area due to their intrinsic safety, potentially low cost and environmental friendliness; however, the zinc dendrite formation, zinc corrosion, passivation and the hydrogen evolution reaction induced by water at the anode side, and materials dissolution as well as intrinsic poor reaction kinetics at cathode side in aqueous systems, seriously shorten the cycling life and decrease energy density of batteries and greatly hinder their development. Recent advancements in asymmetric electrolytes with various functions are promising to overcome such challenges for zinc batteries at the same time. It has been proved that the applications of asymmetric electrolytes show significant contributions in the field of zinc-based batteries in suppressing side reactions while maintaining electrochemical performance to satisfy both anode and cathode.

Lysosomes are best known for their roles in inflammatory responses by engaging in autophagy to remove inflammasomes. Here, we describe an unrecognized role for the lysosome, showing that it finely controls macrophage inflammatory function by manipulating the lysosomal Fe-prolyl hydroxylase domain enzymes (PHDs)-NF-κB-interleukin 1 beta (IL1B) transcription pathway that directly links lysosomes with inflammatory responses. TRPML1, a lysosomal cationic channel, is activated secondarily to ROS elevation upon inflammatory stimuli, which in turn suppresses IL1B transcription, thus limiting the excessive production of IL-1β in macrophages.

Triplet-ground-state nonalternant nanographene with high stability and long spin lifetimes.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, HKU-CAS Joint Laboratory on New Materials and Shanghai-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory on Chemical Synthesis, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.

High-spin carbon-based polyradicals exhibit significant potential for applications in quantum information storage and sensing; however, their practical application is hampered by limited structural diversity and chemical instability. Here, we report a straightforward synthetic and isolation method for synthesizing a nonalternant nanographene (1) with a triplet ground state. Moving beyond the classic m-xylylene scaffold for high-spin organic molecules, seven-five-seven (7-5-7)-membered rings are introduced to create stable high-spin diradicals with half-lives (t) as long as 101 days.

Creating and maintaining a favorable microenvironment for electrocatalytic CO reduction reaction (eCORR) is challenging due to the vigorous interactions with both gas and electrolyte solution during the electrocatalysis. Herein, to boost the performance of eCORR, a unique synthetic method that deploys the in situ reduction of precoated precursors is developed to produce activated Ag nanoparticles (NPs) within the gas diffusion layer (GDL), where the thus-obtained Ag NPs-Skeleton can block direct contact between the active Ag sites and electrolyte. Specifically, compared to the conventional surface loading mode in the acidic media, our freestanding and binder free electrode can achieve obvious higher CO selectivity of 94%, CO production rate of 23.

When low-light meets flares: Towards Synchronous Flare Removal and Brightness Enhancement.

Neural Netw

January 2025

Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, 230601, China; The Key Laboratory of Knowledge Engineering with Big Data, Ministry of Education, Hefei, 230601, China.

Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) aims to improve the visibility and illumination of low-light images. However, real-world low-light images are usually accompanied with flares caused by light sources, which make it difficult to discern the content of dark images. In this case, current LLIE and nighttime flare removal methods face challenges in handling these flared low-light images effectively: (1) Flares in dark images will disturb the content of images and cause uneven lighting, potentially resulting in overexposure or chromatic aberration; (2) the slight noise in low-light images may be amplified during the process of enhancement, leading to speckle noise and blur in the enhanced images; (3) the nighttime flare removal methods usually ignore the detailed information in dark regions, which may cause inaccurate representation.
