Parallelization of particle-based reaction-diffusion simulations using MPI.

Particle-based reaction-diffusion models offer a high-resolution alternative to the continuum reaction-diffusion approach, capturing the discrete and volume-excluding nature of molecules undergoing stochastic dynamics. These methods are thus uniquely capable of simulating explicit self-assembly of particles into higher-order structures like filaments, spherical cages, or heterogeneous macromolecular complexes, which are ubiquitous across living systems and in materials design. The disadvantage of these high-resolution methods is their increased computational cost.

Assessment of the diagnostic value of serum cathepsin S and its correlation with HDL subclasses in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Background: Recent findings point to the key role of cathepsin S (CTSS) in the survival of malignant cells, as well as the significance of the anti-apoptotic properties of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) that contribute to enhanced cell survival. The purpose of this study is to analyse CTSS as a potential biomarker in lymphoma. Also, in order to better understand the role of CTSS in the origin and development of lymphoma, its association with cystatin C (Cys C), lipids, and inflammatory markers was analysed.

Bone quality analysis of the mandible in alcoholic liver cirrhosis: Anatomical, microstructural, and microhardness evaluation.

Objectives: Alcoholic bone disease has been recognized in contemporary literature as a systemic effect of chronic ethanol consumption. However, evidence about the specific influence of alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC) on mandible bone quality is scarce. The aim of this study was to explore microstructural, compositional, cellular, and mechanical properties of the mandible in ALC individuals compared with a healthy control group.

Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin disease marked by recurrent abscesses, sinus tracts, and scarring, often accompanied by systemic symptoms. Diagnosed clinically, HS affects around 0.4% of people in western populations, but standardized treatment options are limited, leading to inconsistent outcomes.

Background: The adoption of healthy self-care practices has proven necessary for professional life, as they often serve as a shield against stressors in the workplace. The COVID-19 pandemic created a high strain on general practitioners (GPs), contributing to increased workload, burnout, and anxiety. The present study aimed to identify self-care practices adopted by GPs amid the COVID-19 pandemic; and to explore the relationships between self-care practices and risk of distress.

Management strategy of giant inguinoscrotal hernia-a case series of 24 consecutive patients surgically treated over 17 years period.

Purpose: Management of giant inguinoscrotal hernia (GIH) is still a challenging procedure associated with a higher risk of intraabdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome as a life-threatening condition. The aim of the study was to present our management strategy for GIH.

Methods: This is a retrospective review of a case series including 24 consecutive patients with 25 GIH who underwent reconstructive surgery from January 2006 to June 2023, at the University Clinic for Digestive Surgery and Hernia Center Zuvela.

Optimal Medical Therapy for Heart Failure and Integrated Care in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Report From the ESC-EHRA EORP Atrial Fibrillation Long-Term General Registry.

Background: Heart failure (HF) often occurs in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), with a major impact on prognosis. Few data are available on the effect of integrated treatment strategies to improve prognosis in patients with AF. We aimed to evaluate the association between HF (according to left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF]), HF optimal medical therapy and adherence to the Atrial Fibrillation Better Care pathway, and major outcomes in patients with AF.

Evaluating frailty scores across experimental groups in rodent models: bridging physical and cognitive domains.

Frailty, a reversible clinical geriatric syndrome, impairs the ability to maintain homeostasis, leading to severe consequences such as hospitalization and death. Cognitive frailty, characterized by the co-occurrence of physical frailty and cognitive impairment, has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Preclinical models, especially rodent studies, are essential for understanding frailty and developing interventions to mitigate associated conditions.

Analysis of the 10-day ultra-marathon using a predictive XG boost model.

Objective: Ultra-marathon running races are held as distance-limited or time-limited events, ranging from 6 h to 10 days. Only a few runners compete in 10-day events, and so far, we have little knowledge about the athletes' origins, performance, and event characteristics. The aim of the present study was to investigate the origin and performance of these runners and the fastest race locations.

High-density theta oscillatory-modulated tDCS over the parietal cortex for targeted memory enhancement.

Objectives: Associative memory (AM) declines due to healthy aging as well as in various neurological conditions. Standard transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) protocols show inconclusive facilitatory effects on AM, often lacking function specificity and stimulation focality. We tested the effectiveness of high-density electrode montage delivering anodal theta oscillatory-modulated transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-Theta-otDCS) over the left posterior parietal cortex (PPC), aiming to target AM in a spatially focused and function-specific manner.

Are ultrasound salivary parenchymal lesions more severe in primary Sjögren patients with a longer disease duration? A cross-sectional study.

Objectives: Salivary gland ultrasound (SGUS) has an interest in primary Sjögren's disease (pSD) for diagnosis, but the evolution of parenchymal lesions over time is unknown. The objective of this study was to assess the severity of ultrasound abnormalities in relation to pSD duration from the time of buccal dryness onset.

Methods: In this cross-sectional international multicentre study, patients with pSD according to the 2002 or 2016 ACR/EULAR classification criteria were included.

sp. nov. isolated from watermelon and muskmelon in Serbia.

Six strains isolated from muskmelon and watermelon seedlings affected by stem rot and wilting in Serbia were reported as based on pathogenicity, LOPAT and cell wall fatty acid analyses. Recent bacterial isolates from cucurbit crops displaying -like symptoms in Alabama, USA, were identified as , prompting polyphasic re-evaluation of the Serbian strains. All six strains were found to cause severe disease in watermelon and squash seedlings under greenhouse conditions.

Single-Atom Catalysts: Are You Really Single?

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to a number of attractive properties allowing their application in different catalytic processes, including electrochemical ones. Due to the nature of the active site, consisting of only a few atoms, SACs are also very attractive for theoretical modeling as the active site can be directly translated into the computational model. However, as a rule, the possibility of the active site change induced by pH and electrode potential is disregarded in theoretical models.

Genome sequence data for 61 isolates of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris from Brassica crops in Serbia.

This Technical Resource describes genome sequencing data for 61 isolates of the bacterial pathogen pv. collected from and crops between 2010 and 2021 in Serbia. We present the raw sequencing reads and annotated contig-level genome assemblies and determine the races of ten isolates.

An unusual case of type I hyperlipidemia - infant with acute encephalopathy, bulging fontanel, vomiting and pink blood: a case report.

Background: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare genetic disorder with heterogeneous presentation, where acute encephalopathy is rarely described in literature. Therefore, initial neurologic symptoms could make the diagnosis and treatment challenging.

Case Presentation: A four-month-old male infant presented with acute encephalopathy, vomiting, bulging fontanel, decreased appetite and failure to thrive.

Herbicide-treated soil as a reservoir of beneficial bacteria: microbiome analysis and PGP bioinoculants in maize.

Background: Herbicides are integral to agricultural weed management but can adversely affect non-target organisms, soil health, and microbiome. We investigated the effects of herbicides on the total soil bacterial community composition using 16S rRNA gene amplicon community profiling. Further, we aimed to identify herbicide-tolerant bacteria with plant growth-promoting (PGP) capabilities as a mitigative strategy for these negative effects, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Pain, dietary habits and physical activity of children with developmental disabilities in Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Multiple studies have shown that children with developmental disabilities (CDD) often live with unrecognized and untreated pain, consume inadequate diet and have inadequate levels of physical activity. This study aimed to analyze pain, dietary habits and physical activity of CDD in Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia in March-April 2023 within the Erasmus+ SynergyEd project.

Pharmaco-Invasive Strategy With Half-Dose Tenecteplase in Patients With STEMI: Prespecified Pooled Analysis of Patients Aged ≥75 Years in STREAM-1 and 2.

Background: In STREAM-1 (Strategic Reperfusion Early After Myocardial Infarction), excess intracranial hemorrhage occurred in patients aged ≥75 years receiving full-dose tenecteplase as part of a pharmaco-invasive strategy, whereas no further intracranial hemorrhage occurred after halving the tenecteplase dose. In STREAM-2 (Second Strategic Reperfusion Early After Myocardial Infarction), half-dose tenecteplase was an effective and safe pharmaco-invasive strategy in older patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction presenting within <3 hours, compared with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We prespecified evaluating the efficacy and safety of a half-dose versus full-dose pharmaco-invasive strategy and compared the half-dose pharmaco-invasive strategy to primary PCI in patients aged ≥75 years.

Characterization and expression analysis of heat shock proteins HfHspc1 and HfHspc4 in Haemaphysalis flava ticks.

In this study, the cDNAs of heat shock cognate 90 protein 1 (HfHspc1) and heat shock cognate 90 protein 4 (HfHspc4) from Haemaphysalis flava (Acari: Ixodidae) were obtained using the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) approach, and the expression patterns of HfHspc1 and HfHspc4 in different developmental stages, engorgement stages and tick organs were analyzed by qPCR. The full length of HfHspc1 was 2411 bp, and its open reading frame (ORF) was 2196 bp, encoding a protein of 732 aa, containing five HSPC family signatures, with MEEVD motif at its extreme C-terminal. The full length of HfHspc4 was 2800 bp, and its ORF was 2364 bp, encoding a protein of 789 aa, containing a signal peptide and five family signatures, with HEEL motif at its extreme C-terminal.

Modeling Carbon-Based Nanomaterials (CNMs) and Derived Composites and Devices.

A review of different modeling techniques, specifically in the framework of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs, including nanoparticles such as graphene and carbon nanotubes-CNTs) and the composites and devices that can be derived from them, is presented. The article emphasizes that the overall performance of these materials depends on mechanisms that operate across different time and spatial scales, requiring tailored approaches based on the material type, size, internal structure/configuration, and the specific properties of interest. Far from attempting to cover the entire spectrum of models, this review examines a wide range of analysis and simulation techniques, highlighting their potential use, some of their weaknesses and strengths, and presenting the latest developments and some application examples.

Impairment of Left Ventricular Function in Hyperthyroidism Caused by Graves' Disease: An Echocardiographic Study.

The thyroid gland has an important influence on the heart. Long-term exposure to high levels of thyroid hormones may lead to cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction. The aim of the study was to evaluate the morphological and functional changes in the left ventricle in patients with hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease (GD) in comparison with healthy individuals, as well as to investigate potential differences in these parameters in GD patients in relation to the presence of orbitopathy.

Specificities of Myocardial Infarction and Heart Failure in Women.

Substantial evidence from previous clinical studies, randomized trials, and patient registries confirms the existence of significant differences in cardiac morphology, pathophysiology, prevalence of specific coronary artery disease (CAD), and clinical course of myocardial infarction (MI) between men and women. The aim of this review is to investigate the impact of sex or gender on the development and clinical course of MI, the mechanisms and features of left ventricular (LV) remodeling, and heart failure (HF). The main sex-related difference in post-MI LV remodeling is adverse LV dilatation in males versus concentric LV remodeling or concentric LV hypertrophy in females.

Is There a Relationship Between Prenatal Dexamethasone and Postnatal Fructose Overexposure and Testicular Development, Function, and Oxidative Stress Parameters in Rats?

Prenatal glucocorticoid overexposure alters the developmental program of fetal reproductive organs and results in numerous changes that can lead to various disorders later in life. Moderate fructose consumption during childhood and adolescence may impair the development and function of reproductive organs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prenatal dexamethasone (Dx) exposure in combination with postnatal fructose overconsumption on testicular development and function in fetal and adult male rat offspring.
