June 2010

University North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, UNC Eating Disorders Program, 101 Manning Drive, CB ]7160, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7160, USA.

This study investigated the prevalence of eating disorder symptoms in first-year students at the University of Puerto Rico. Responses to the Bulimia Test Revised (BULIT-R), the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were analyzed in a sample of 2,163 freshman students. The percentage of students at or above the clinical cut-off points was 3.

Projected elevation of seawater temperatures poses a threat to the reproductive success of Caribbean reef-building corals that have planktonic development during the warmest months of the year. This study examined the transcriptomic changes that occurred during embryonic and larval development of the elkhorn coral, Acropora palmata, at a non-stressful temperature (28°C) and further assessed the effects of two elevated temperatures (30°C and 31.5°C) on these expression patterns.

The effect of downhill running on Notch signaling in regenerating skeletal muscle.

Eur J Appl Physiol

July 2009

Exercise Physiology Laboratory, Department of Kinesiology, University North Carolina, Charlotte, Charlotte, NC 28223, USA.

Notch signaling expression in regenerating muscle following injurious downhill running (DHR) was characterized in male C57BL/J6 mice (3 mo). Hindlimb muscles were harvested from control mice or at 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 h post-DHR. Muscle injury was observed at 96 h (3.

Temporary diverting ileostomies are routine performed as a "protective" adjunct to ileal pouch procedures. The need for routine diverting ileostomies has been challenged because of the risks associated with their management. A review of the available data and my personal experience demonstrates that diversion results in lower pouch leaks but a higher instance of pouch failure and strictures.

The researchers document the individual and workplace characteristics associated with decreased work productivity and intent to stay in nursing for nurses employed in direct patient care in the hospital setting. Factors associated with decreased work productivity were age, total years worked as a RN, quality of care provided, job stress score, having had a job injury, and having a health problem. Nurse leaders must place additional efforts on changes needed to improve the hospital workplace environment to decrease job stress, improve RNs' ability to provide quality care, and to assure the health and safety of nurses.

Evidence supporting nutritional interventions for persons in early stage Alzheimer's disease (AD).

J Nutr Health Aging

January 2008

University North Carolina at Greensboro, Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality, HHP Building, Greensboro, NC, USA.

The purpose of this paper is to grade research evidence supporting nutritional interventions for persons with early stage dementias and to report the recommendations of a consensus panel. Thirty four studies were reviewed in the areas of dietary restriction, antioxidants, and Mediterranean diet with strong support from epidemiological studies found in all three areas. The body of evidence to support nutritional interventions in the prevention and treatment of AD is growing and has potential as a treatment modality following translational studies.

Calcium loading, calcium accumulation, and associated cardiovascular risks in dialysis patients.

Blood Purif

June 2005

University North Carolina, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, USA.

Calcium and phosphate imbalances are important mutable risk factors for cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Nearly all dialysis patients require phosphate binders. These include traditional calcium-based compounds and, more recently, the calcium-free, metal-free, non-absorbed agent, sevelamer hydrochloride.

We compared the economic well-being and maternal employment of parents whose children did or did not have developmental disabilities. This prospective study is a secondary analysis of data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, collected when respondents were aged 18, 36, and 53, on average. Although the two groups were similar at age 18, income and savings differed markedly by age 53, but statistically significant differences were not found on other measures.

Objective: To examine associations of hypertension with obesity and fat distribution among African American and white men and women.

Research Methods And Procedures: The analysis sample included 15,063 African American and white men and women between the ages of 45 and 64 years who were participants in the 1987 through 1989 examination of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC). Odds ratios and adjusted prevalences of hypertension were calculated across sex-specific quintiles of body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio (waist/ height) and adjusted for age, research center, smoking, education, physical activity, alcohol consumption, hormone replacement therapy, and menopausal status.

Previous studies have found variable evidence suggestive of a role for human papillomavirus (HPV) in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. In this study 49 cases of primary verrucous or squamous cell carcinoma from patients referred to a regional medical center were examined initially by Southern blot hybridization to detect HPV types 2, 6, 11, 13, 16, 18, and 32. Approximately 60% of carcinomas from certain head and neck sites, particularly the floor of the mouth, tongue, pharynx, piriform sinus, and larynx, were positive for episomal viral DNA of HPV-6, -11, -16, or -18.

Immunological aspects of markers of joint disease.

J Rheumatol Suppl

February 1991

Department of Surgery, University North Carolina, Chapel Hill 27599.

There is considerable potential for using immunological methods to detect and quantify markers of joint disease in man and animal models. These markers usually result from increased matrix turnover as the disease develops, and fall into several categories. Anabolic markers are those that specifically recognize epitopes in macromolecules that are newly synthesized in the cells' initial response to repair and remodel the tissue in the early stages of the disease.

The abnormal patterns of binocular stimulation produced by unilateral eye immobilization (monocular paralysis) alter the physiology of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), shifting the LGN X/Y ratio in such a way that X cells are encountered far less frequently than Y cells. These changes are not observed in cats treated with intraventricular injections of the neurotoxin, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) during the period of chronic monocular paralysis. Additional experiments indicated that the blockade was not due to any non-specific effects associated with the injection procedures, nor to any direct effects the drug itself may have had on LGN cell recording.

A high performance liquid chromatographic procedure has been used for the purification of rat Sertoli cell secretory protein S70 and S45-S35 heterodimeric protein to determine their role during spermatogenesis. These two proteins display binding affinity for each other and appear antigenically related. We have observed that: 1.
