Simulating cardiac fluid dynamics in the human heart.

Cardiac fluid dynamics fundamentally involves interactions between complex blood flows and the structural deformations of the muscular heart walls and the thin valve leaflets. There has been longstanding scientific, engineering, and medical interest in creating mathematical models of the heart that capture, explain, and predict these fluid-structure interactions (FSIs). However, existing computational models that account for interactions among the blood, the actively contracting myocardium, and the valves are limited in their abilities to predict valve performance, capture fine-scale flow features, or use realistic descriptions of tissue biomechanics.

Understanding the psychosocial context of employment and occupational productivity among women living with HIV: A mixed-methods study.

Background: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) are particularly vulnerable to poor employment outcomes, impacting their socioeconomic independence and personal sense of empowerment.

Objective: This article presents the results of a mixed methods study, which examined the personal, clinical, and socioeconomic contexts associated with employment and occupational productivity among employed WLHIV (n = 164) in the Southern United States.

Methods: The Stanford Presenteeism Scale-6 was used to assess the perceived impact of HIV disease on the ability to maintain focus and complete tasks at work.

The impact of diabetes mellitus on HIV virologic control: results of the MACS/WIHS combined cohort study.

Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with lower antiretroviral (ART) drug exposure among persons with HIV (PWH) compared to PWH without DM. The association between DM and virologic control in PWH, however, remains unknown.

Methods: We included participants in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study/Women's Interagency HIV Study Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS) who had initiated ART between 1999 and 2020 and had a suppressed HIV viral load (≤200 copies/ml) within 1 year of ART initiation.

Pilot evaluation of the Fiscal Mapping Process for sustainable financing of evidence-based youth mental health treatments: A comparative case study analysis.

Background: Sustained delivery of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) is essential to addressing the public health impacts of youth mental health problems, but is complicated by the limited and fragmented funding available to youth mental health service agencies. Supports are needed that can guide service agencies in accessing sustainable funding for EBTs. We conducted a pilot evaluation of the Fiscal Mapping Process, an Excel-based strategic planning tool that helps service agency leaders identify and coordinate financing strategies for their EBT programs.

Benchmarking the Immersed Boundary Method for Viscoelastic Flows.

We present and analyze a series of benchmark tests regarding the application of the immersed boundary (IB) method to viscoelastic flows through and around non-trivial, stationary geometries. The IB method is widely used to simulate biological fluid dynamics and other modeling scenarios in which a structure is immersed in a fluid. Although the IB method has been most commonly used to model systems involving viscous incompressible fluids, it also can be applied to visoelastic fluids, and has enabled the study of a wide variety of dynamical problems including the settling of vesicles and the swimming of elastic filaments in fluids modeled by the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation.

Background: Health systems rapidly adopted telemedicine as an alternative health care delivery modality in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Demographic factors, such as age and gender, may play a role in patients' choice of a phone or video visit. However, it is unknown whether there are differences in utilization between phone and video visits.

A promising strategy to cure HIV-infected individuals is to use latency reversing agents (LRAs) to reactivate latent viruses, followed by host clearance of infected reservoir cells. However, reactivation of latent proviruses within infected cells is heterogeneous and often incomplete. This fact limits strategies to cure HIV which may require complete elimination of viable virus from all cellular reservoirs.

EXPLORE B: A prospective, long-term natural history study of patients with acute hepatic porphyria with chronic symptoms.

One-year data from EXPLORE Part A showed high disease burden and impaired quality of life (QOL) in patients with acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) with recurrent attacks. We report baseline data of patients who enrolled in EXPLORE Part B for up to an additional 3 years of follow-up. EXPLORE B is a long-term, prospective study evaluating disease activity, pain intensity, and QOL in patients with AHP with ≥1 attack in the 12 months before enrollment or receiving hemin or gonadotropin-releasing hormone prophylaxis.

Co-occurring Epidemic Conditions Among Southern U.S. Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in an Online eHealth Intervention.

Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) face disproportionately higher risks for adverse sexual health outcomes compared to their non-Hispanic White counterparts. This disparity can be attributable to overlapping and intersecting risk factors at the individual and structural levels and can be understood through syndemic theory. Using longitudinal data from the HealthMPowerment trial (n = 363), six conditions related to stigma syndemics were indexed as a cumulative risk score: high alcohol use, polydrug use, depression and anxiety symptomology, and experiences of racism and sexual minority stigma.

OLIG2 Is a Determinant for the Relapse of MYC-Amplified Medulloblastoma.

Purpose: Patients with MYC-amplified medulloblastoma (MB) have poor prognosis and frequently develop recurrence, thus new therapeutic approaches to prevent recurrence are needed.

Experimental Design: We evaluated OLIG2 expression in a panel of mouse Myc-driven MB tumors, patient MB samples, and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumors and analyzed radiation sensitivity in OLIG2-high and OLIG2-low tumors in PDX lines. We assessed the effect of inhibition of OLIG2 by OLIG2-CRISPR or the small molecule inhibitor CT-179 combined with radiotherapy on tumor progression in PDX models.

Yet, their role in autoinflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) remains incompletely defined. The NLR, Nlrp12, has been reported to both inhibit and promote neuroinflammation in an animal model of multiple sclerosis (experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, EAE), where its T cell-specific role has been investigated.

Same-day antiretroviral therapy initiation for people living with HIV who have tuberculosis symptoms: a systematic review.

Objectives: Tuberculosis symptoms are very common among people living with HIV (PLHIV) initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART), are not specific for tuberculosis disease and may result in delayed ART start. The risks and benefits of same-day ART initiation in PLHIV with tuberculosis symptoms are unknown.

Methods: We systematically reviewed nine databases on 12 March 2020 to identify studies that investigated same-day ART initiation among PLHIV with tuberculosis symptoms and reported both their approach to TB screening and clinical outcomes.

Background: Public health measures, such as social isolation, are vital to control the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but such measures may increase the risk of depression. Thus, this study examines the influencing and moderating factors of depressive symptoms among individuals subjected to mandatory social isolation.

Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect data from people under mandatory home or centralized social isolation in Shenzhen, China, from February 28 to March 6, 2020.

Re-transplantation in pediatric patients with failure of primary transplant due to recurrent focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: A pediatric nephrology research consortium study.
