The ability to address specific sequences within DNA is of tremendous interest in biotechnology and biomedicine. Various technologies have been established over the past few decades, such as nicking enzymes and methyltransferase-directed sequence-specific labeling, transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), the CRISPR-Cas9 system, and polyamides of heterocycles as sequence-specific DNA minor groove binders. Pyrrole-imidazole polyamides have been reported to recognize predetermined DNA sequences, and some successful attempts have demonstrated their potential in regulating gene expression.

Linguistic validation of the Epworth Sleep Scale among healthy individuals into Moroccan dialect.

Sleep Breath

November 2024

Department of Epidemiology, CHU Mohammed VI, Faculty Medicine, University Mohammed I, Oujda, Morocco.

Background/aim: We performed a linguistic validation of the original version of the Epworth Sleep Scale (ESS) into the Moroccan dialect according to Guillemin's guidelines.

Materials And Methods: After translating the English version of the ESS according to the standard guidelines, we asked 120 healthy subjects to complete the questionnaire twice with an interval of 10 days. We assess the acceptability and internal reliability by Cronbach's alpha coefficient, while for the test-retest reproducibility we use the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (95% confidence interval (CI)) and the kappa coefficient.

Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Genotoxicity, and Antifungal and Antibacterial Studies of Ni(II) and Cd(II) Pyrazole Amide Coordination Complexes.

Molecules

March 2024

Institute of Condensed Matter and Nanosciences, Molecular Chemistry, Materials and Catalysis (IMCN/MOST), Université Catholique de Louvain, Place Louis Pasteur 1, 1348 Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

In this study, we synthesized two coordination complexes based on pyrazole-based ligands, namely 1,5-dimethyl--phenyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide () and 1,5-dimethyl--propyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (), with the aim to investigate bio-inorganic properties. Their crystal structures revealed a mononuclear complex [Ni()](ClO) () and a dinuclear complex [Cd()]Cl (). Very competitive antifungal and anti-Fusarium activities were found compared to the reference standard cycloheximide.

Given the ischemic risk due to the hypercoagulability associated with acute coronary syndromes, the administration of antiplatelet and antithrombotic agents is necessary to prevent intracoronary and postprocedural thrombosis during percutaneous coronary interventions. However, the risk of bleeding, hemorrhagic stroke included, is real, although it has a lower prevalence, and it complicates the management of the coronary event if it happens. We report the case of a 66 years old patient with no prior pathological history who was initially admitted for acute coronary syndromes, complicated by paroxysmal atrial fibrillation that was successfully thrombolysed.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 23-year-old patient experienced an acute myocardial infarction just one day after receiving the second dose of the COVID-19 BIBP vaccine, leading to severe heart dysfunction.
  • - Despite normal coronary arteries, cardiac MRI revealed signs of a recent heart attack, particularly in the left anterior descending artery area, with no evidence of myocarditis.
  • - The case suggests a potential link between the vaccine and the heart event, but it's important to note that severe complications from COVID-19 vaccines are very rare, and health experts still strongly recommend vaccination due to its overall benefits.

Systematic analysis of nutrigenomic effects of polyphenols related to cardiometabolic health in humans - Evidence from untargeted mRNA and miRNA studies.

Ageing Res Rev

August 2022

Université Clermont Auvergne, INRAE, UNH, F-63000 Clermont Ferrand, France; Department of Nutrition, University of California Davis, Davis, CA 95616, United States. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - Polyphenols found in diets are beneficial for heart and metabolic health, but their specific molecular mechanisms in humans are not fully understood and often studied in isolation.
  • - By analyzing data from multiple studies and examining nearly 5000 different genes in blood cells, researchers found that polyphenol intake correlates with positive changes in gene expression related to health, particularly in areas like metabolism and immune response.
  • - The research suggests that polyphenols have protective properties against diseases linked to aging, highlighting the potential of multi-omic bioinformatics as a powerful tool for studying these health benefits.

Leishmanioses are of public health concern in Morocco, mainly the Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) endemic in the Moroccan pre-Saharian area. Transmission of this disease depends on eco-epidemiological and socio-economic conditions. Therefore, a multivariable approach is required to delineate the risk and intensity of transmission.

Pesticides are a vital component of modern agriculture. So, these chemical compounds could play a crucial role in maintaining high agricultural productivity. However, high-input intensive agricultural production systems in which more effective and widespread use of pesticides could harm human health and the environment.

Hyperlipidemia and oxidative stress are risk factors for atherosclerosis. In this study, we investigated the hypolipidemic and anti-lipoprotein oxidation activities of polyphenol-rich extracts from almond hulls using Triton WR-1339 and high-fat diet-induced hyperlipemic mice as experimental models. We demonstrated that the almond hull extract significantly reduced total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein-related plasma cholesterol (LDL-C) in the two experimental models of hyperlipidemia, but significantly increased high-density lipoprotein-related plasma cholesterol (HDL-C).

One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.

The bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed in particular among outpatients with recurrent depression. Indeed, this work confirmed that the unrecognised bipolar disorder is common among depressed outpatients, which were younger, unemployed, single or divorced with a low socio-economic level. These socio-demographics data gives us an idea about the disability experienced by the unknown bipolar patients.

A novel algorithm to reconstruct neutrino-induced particle showers within the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. The method achieves a median angular resolution of [Formula: see text] for shower energies below 100 TeV. Applying this algorithm to 6 years of data taken with the ANTARES detector, 8 events with reconstructed shower energies above 10 TeV are observed.

Despite dedicated research has been carried out to adequately map the distribution of the sperm whale in the Mediterranean Sea, unlike other regions of the world, the species population status is still presently uncertain. The analysis of two years of continuous acoustic data provided by the ANTARES neutrino telescope revealed the year-round presence of sperm whales in the Ligurian Sea, probably associated with the availability of cephalopods in the region. The presence of the Ligurian Sea sperm whales was demonstrated through the real-time analysis of audio data streamed from a cabled-to-shore deep-sea observatory that allowed the hourly tracking of their long-range echolocation behaviour on the Internet.
