Soil microorganisms play an important role in the degradation of PAHs and use various metabolic pathways for this process. The effect of soil pH, different soil amendments and the co-cultivation of fungi on the degradation of PAHs in soil and on the activity of ligninolytic enzymes was evaluated. For that purpose, three fungi were studied: Trichoderma viride, Penicillium chrysogenum and Agrocybe aegerita.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are persistent pollutants of great concern due to their potential toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. A biotechnological approach to remove PAH from soil was evaluated in this work using a laccase mediator system. Initially, laccase was produced by fungal co-cultivation, using kiwi peels as substrate.

Over the past few decades, titanium (Ti) implants have been widely used to repair fractured bones. To promote osteogenesis, immobilization of osteoinductive agents, such as recombinant human bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP2), onto the Ti surface is required. In this study, we prepared rhBMP2 immobilized on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) deposited Ti surface through initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) technique.

Normal homeostasis of adult intestinal epithelium and repair following tissue damage is maintained by a balance of stem and differentiated cells, many of which are still only poorly characterised. Enteroendocrine cells of the gut are a small population of differentiated, secretory cells that are critical for integrating nutrient sensing with metabolic responses, dispersed amongst other epithelial cells. Recent evidence suggests that sub-sets of secretory enteroendocrine cells can act as reserve stem cells.

Poly(L-lactic acid), PLLA, a synthetic biodegradable polyester, is widely accepted in tissue engineering. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural polymer, exhibits an excellent biocompatibility, influences cell signaling, proliferation, and differentiation. In this study, HA crosslinking was performed by immersion of the polysaccharide in water-acetone mixtures containing glutaraldehyde (GA).
