Introduction: CHAMOMILE (CHaracteristics and impact of flares on clinicAl and econoMic OutcoMes In patients with systemic Lupus Erythematosus [SLE]) examined how flares in the year of SLE diagnosis impact future disease activity and damage, productivity, healthcare resource utilization (HCRU), and costs in patients with SLE in Germany.

Methods: CHAMOMILE was a retrospective cohort study of adults with an SLE diagnosis in the German Sickness Fund Database from 1 July 2010 to 31 December 2013. Patients were classified according to their greatest flare severity during the baseline year (none, mild, or moderate/severe).

Oncologic long-term outcome of single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for colorectal cancer.

Int J Colorectal Dis

August 2021

Department of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery, Leverkusen General Hospital, Am Gesundheitspark 11, 51375, Leverkusen, Germany.

Purpose: Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) has been introduced as a less invasive alternative to multi-port laparoscopic surgery (MLS). MLS is widely accepted for the treatment of colorectal cancer, but there remains minimal evidence for the use of SILS. Thus, we compared both short- and long-term outcomes of SILS and open surgery (OS) in matched cohorts of colorectal cancer patients.

Closure of the posterolateral defect in some cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) can be difficult. Percutaneous transcostal suturing is often helpful to create a complete, watertight closure of the diaphragm. A challenge with the technique is passing the needle out the same tract that it entered so that no skin is caught when the knots are laid down into the subcutaneous tissue.

Ductal occlusion has been postulated to precipitate focal pancreatic inflammation, while the nature of the primary occluding agents has remained elusive. Neutrophils make use of histone citrullination by peptidyl arginine deiminase-4 (PADI4) in contact to particulate agents to extrude decondensed chromatin as neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). In high cellular density, NETs form macroscopically visible aggregates.

Effects of inhaled corticosteroids in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Pulm Pharmacol Ther

February 2011

III. Medical Clinic, Dept. of Pulmonary Disease, University Medicine of Johannes-Gutenberg University Mainz, University Medicine Mainz, Langenbeckstr. 1, D-55131 Mainz, Germany.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been described as a heterogeneous multifactorial disorder associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the peripheral airways and with variable morphologic, physiologic and clinical phenotypes. This notion of the disease is actually poorly supported by data, and there are substantial discrepancies and a weak correlation between inflammation, structural damage, functional impairment and degree of clinical symptoms. This problem is compounded by a poor understanding of the complexity and intricacies on the inflammatory pathways in COPD.
