Iatrogenic nerve lesion following laparoscopic surgery. A case report.

Background: Peripheral neuropathy after surgical treatment is an under recognized potential untoward event. Pelvic surgery may be associated with nerve lesions by essentially three main mechanisms: transection, entrapment and pressure-stretching; the latter is the modality most frequently linked to patient's positioning on the operating room table.

Presentation Of The Case: A 25 years old woman, after undergoing a laparoscopic gynaecologic procedure lasted >3 hours, on postoperative day one presented with numbness over her lateral right leg and dorsum of the foot, right foot drop and gait instability due to compression-stretching of the right superficial peroneal nerve.

Management of Mirizzi Syndrome in Emergency.

Introduction: Mirizzi syndrome (MS) is a rare complication of cholelithiasis. Despite the success of laparoscopic cholecystectomy as a minimally invasive approach to gallstone disease, MS remains a challenge, also for open and robotic approaches, due to the subverted anatomy of the hepatocystic triangle. Moreover, when emergency surgery is needed, the optimal preoperative diagnostic assessment could not be always achievable.

Clinical biomarkers and management of post thrombotic syndrome.

The post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a long-term complication of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) that is characterized by chronic, persistent pain, swelling and other signs in the affected limb. PTS is common, burdensome and costly. It is likely to increase in prevalence, since despite widespread use of and improvements in the efficacy of thromboprophylaxis, the incidence of DVT has not decreased over time.

Clinical biomarkers in esophageal adenocarcinoma.

This review describes genetic and molecular changes related to adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) with emphasis on prognostic value and possibilities for targeted therapy in clinical setting. The progression of Barrett's esophagus to adenocarcinoma has been the focus of particular scrutiny, and a number of potential tissue and serum-based disease biomarkers have emerged. Tissue biomarkers allowing risk stratification of Barrett's are reviewed as well as strategies currently being used to discover novel biomarkers that will facilitate the early detection of esophageal adenocarcinoma.
