Introduction: Periodontal health and biofilm control are primordial to success in orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwashes on periodontal status and extrinsic tooth staining in orthodontic patients.
Methods: Thirty-three patients of both sexes, aged 11-33 years, under orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances at <16 months, were randomly distributed into 2 groups.

The identification of mechanosensitive ion channels and their importance in innate immunity provides new starting points to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of orthodontic tooth movement. The mechanosensitive electron channel PIEZO1 (Piezo Type Mechanosensitive Ion Channel Component 1) may play a crucial role in orthodontic tooth movement. To investigate the role of the PIEZO1 channel, periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLF) were subsequently treated with a PIEZO1 inhibitor (GsMTx) with simultaneous pressure application or with an activator (JEDI2) without mechanical strain.

Objective: To perform an overview of systematic reviews (SR) assessing the impact of malocclusion treatments (Orthodontic Treatment - OT and/or Orthodontic Surgical Treatment - OST) on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL).
Materials And Methods: A search strategy was conducted in electronic databases until June 7th, 2021, followed by a manual search in grey literature and registration databases. Two independent authors applied the eligibility criteria, extracted the data, assessed the risk of bias (AMSTAR-2), and performed the certainty of evidence (GRADE) evaluation.

Intestinal microbiome diversity plays an important role in the pathophysiology of acute gastrointestinal (GI) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and influences the outcome of patients after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (ASCT). We analyzed clinical data and blood samples taken preconditioning and on the day of ASCT from 587 patients from 7 German centers of the Mount Sinai Acute GVHD International Consortium, dividing them into single-center test (n = 371) and multicenter validation (n = 216) cohorts. Regenerating islet-derived 3α (Reg3α) serum concentration of day 0 correlated with clinical data as well as urinary 3-indoxylsulfate (3-IS) and Clostridiales group XIVa, indicators of intestinal microbiome diversity.

Background: The aim of this in vivo study was to quantitatively evaluate pain after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in young rats by analyzing the activation of nociception-related structures, that is, the caudalis, interpolaris, and oralis subnuclei, according to the Fos expression.
Methods: A total of 65 Wistar rats were assigned to three groups: control group (n = 15) with no treatment, positive control group (n = 25), and experimental group (n = 25) with RME. The experimental animals were euthanized at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after RME, and the brain was later carefully collected.

Objectives: To assess the influence of estrogen deficiency on tooth eruption rate (TER) and gene expression of estrogen receptor alpha and beta (ERα and ERβ) in the odontogenic region of teeth with continuous formation in a rat model.
Materials And Methods: Ovariectomies (OVX; n = 25) and sham surgeries (SHAM; n = 25) were performed in female Wistar rats when animals were 25 days old. The TER of the lower incisors, both in impeded (hyperfunction condition) and unimpeded (trimmed incisal edge-hypofunction condition) conditions, was evaluated using standardized digital photographs acquired every 48-72 h for 3 weeks (35th-53rd day of life), using a camera coupled to a stereomicroscope.

Considering that smoking is a public health problem that has been growing among adolescents, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of cigarette smoke on osteogenic and osteoclastogenic signaling in middle palatal suture of rats. Male Wistar rats exposed (n = 30) or not to cigarette smoke (n = 30) were used. Exposure to smoke was carried out for two daily periods of 3 minutes each, with an interval of 12 hours between exposures.

Background: The endogenous hormone melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm and impacts on bone metabolism. As patient compliance to wear removable orthodontic appliances is generally higher at night, when melatonin release is increased, a boosting effect on tooth movement would be favourable for therapy, whereas an inhibiting effect would indicate daytime wear to be more therapy-effective. We hypothesize that melatonin has either a stimulating or impeding effect on the expression profile of periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLF) during simulated orthodontic compressive and tensile strain, which would suggest either an accelerating or inhibiting impact on orthodontic tooth movement in vivo.

Materials And Methods: Four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS) were electronically searched until November 22, 2020, followed by manual and gray literature search. Case-control or cross-sectional studies that evaluated genes involved in the susceptibility of orthodontic patients to EARR were eligible.

During orthodontic tooth movement, transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) is stabilised in the periodontal ligament. While HIF1α in periodontal ligament fibroblasts can be stabilised by mechanical compression, in macrophages pressure application alone is not sufficient to stabilise HIF1α. The present study was conducted to investigate the role of myeloid HIF1α during orthodontic tooth movement.

Purpose: Apart from other risk factors, mechanical stress on joints can promote the development of osteoarthritis (OA), which can also affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), resulting in cartilage degeneration and synovitis. Synovial fibroblasts (SF) play an important role in upkeeping joint homeostasis and OA pathogenesis, but mechanical stress as a risk factor might act differently depending on the type of joint. We thus investigated the relative impact of mechanical stress on the gene expression pattern of SF from TMJs and knee joints to provide new insights into OA pathogenesis.
