Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome which is due to cardiac structural and/or functional abnormalities that result in elevated intra-cardiac pressures and/or inadequate cardiac output. Hemodynamic assessment in HF allows the identification and characterization of cardiac dysfunction, systemic and/or pulmonary congestion and the eventual impairment of systemic perfusion which are fundamental to phenotype HF, risk stratify HF patients and to guide their treatment. Patient hemodynamics can be characterized invasively with right heart catheterization but also non-invasively with the use of echocardiography and other non-invasive ultrasound tools.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and stiffness in muscles and joints. Traumatic life experiences and post-traumatic stress symptoms play a role in its development and persistence. Although previous research suggests that pain and FM symptoms decrease after eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, its effectiveness has not been investigated in a controlled manner.

The correct identification of Campylobacter species remains cumbersome, especially when conventional biochemical tests and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns are used for a phenotypical identification. Correct identification is important for epidemiological purposes and for studying changes in antimicrobial resistance patterns. Six erythromycin-resistant campylobacter strains were investigated by 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing, 23S rDNA sequencing, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of a putative heme-copper oxidase domain described as being specific for thermophilic Campylobacter species.

Although it has been demonstrated that lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells kill tumor cells in a selective way without being toxic to a variety of normal cells, contradictory results exist about the possible toxicity of natural killer (NK) and LAK cells for hematopoietic progenitor cells. Therefore, the cytolytic activity and growth inhibitory effects of LAK cells on normal bone marrow progenitor cells and the ability of LAK cells to eliminate neoplastic hematopoietic cells from populations of bone marrow cells in vitro was studied. The results of these experiments show the following: (1) LAK cells have little cytolytic activity against normal bone marrow cells; (2) normal bone marrow cells fail to cold target compete for the killing of the hematopoietic tumor cell lines K562 and HL60 or freshly frozen acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) blast cells by LAK cells; (3) LAK cells inhibit the growth of K562 and HL60 to more than 90% in clonogenic assays; (4) LAK cells have no inhibitory effect on hematopoietic progenitor growth in CFU-GM (colony-forming unit-granulocytes, macrophages), CFU-E (colony-forming unit-erythrocytes), BFU-E (burst-forming units-erythrocytes), or CFU-GEMM (colony-forming unit-granulocytes, erythrocytes, macrophages, megakaryocytes) assays.
