Objectives: Introducing SPINEPS, a deep learning method for semantic and instance segmentation of 14 spinal structures (ten vertebra substructures, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, spinal canal, and sacrum) in whole-body sagittal T2-weighted turbo spin echo images.
Material And Methods: This local ethics committee-approved study utilized a public dataset (train/test 179/39 subjects, 137 female), a German National Cohort (NAKO) subset (train/test 1412/65 subjects, mean age 53, 694 female), and an in-house dataset (test 10 subjects, mean age 70, 5 female). SPINEPS is a semantic segmentation model, followed by a sliding window approach utilizing a second model to create instance masks from the semantic ones.

Background: Canine mammary tumours (CMT) are among the most common types of tumours in female dogs. Diagnosis currently requires invasive tissue biopsies and histological analysis. Tumour cells shed extracellular vesicles (EVs) containing RNAs and proteins with potential for liquid biopsy diagnostics.

Background: Radiation science is of utmost significance not only due to its growing importance for clinical use, but also in everyday life such as in radiation protection questions. The expected increase in cancer incidence due to an aging population combined with technical advancements further implicates this importance and results in a higher need for sufficient highly educated and motivated personnel. Thus, factors preventing young scientists and medical personnel from entering or remaining in the field need to be identified.

Total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) of rectal cancer improves rates of pathological complete remission and progression-free survival. With improved clinical response rates, interest grew in a non-operative approach/watch and wait (WaW) for this disease. In 2020, the working groups of ACO/AIO/ARO published a consensus statement on the use of TNT, including a non-operative approach.

Canine malignant melanoma (CMM) is highly aggressive and mostly located in the oral cavity. CMM is the predominant type of canine oral malignancy and shows striking homologies with human mucosal melanoma. In comparative oncology, canine oral melanomas (COMs), as spontaneous tumor models, have the potential to acquire a unique value as a translational model of rare human melanoma subtypes.

Background: Postoperative continuous thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) is an integral aspect of pain management after major abdominal and thoracic surgery. Under TEA, postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is frequently noted, prompting a common practice of maintaining the transurethral catheter (UC) until the cessation of TEA to avoid the necessity for reinsertion of the UC. This study analyzes the effect of an early bladder catheter removal during TEA on POUR incidence.

Introduction: To assess differences in referral and pathologic outcomes for uro-oncology cases prior to, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, comparing clinical and pathological data from cancer surgeries performed at a university medical center between 2018 and 2023.
Methods: We collected data of 212 patients with radical prostatectomy (RP) for prostate cancer, 157 patients with radical cystectomies (RCs) for bladder cancer, 36 patients with radical nephroureterectomies (RNUs) for upper tract urothelial carcinoma, 133 patients with partial nephrectomies (PNs), and 160 patients with radical nephrectomies (RNs) for renal cancer, 93 patients with orchifunicolectomy for testicular cancer, 39 patients with newly diagnosed penile cancer. Data from patients treated between 2018 and February 2020 (before the COVID-19 pandemic) were compared with data from patients treated between March 2020 and March 2022 (during the COVID-19 pandemic) and between April 2022 and February 2023 (after the COVID-19 pandemic).

Increasing evidence suggests an essential function for autophagy in unconventional protein secretion (UPS). However, despite its relevance for the secretion of aggregate-prone proteins, the mechanisms of secretory autophagy in neurons have remained elusive. Here we show that the lower motoneuron disease-associated guanine exchange factor Plekhg5 drives the UPS of Sod1.

Background: Headache disorders are among the most prevalent neurological disorders worldwide. However, whether groups differing in socioeconomic position (SEP) are disproportionately affected by headache disorders has not yet been adequately clarified. Our aim was to analyse (1) the headache prevalence by socioeconomic position (SEP) and (2) the attack frequency by SEP in a German population-based adult sample.

Introduction: While ample data demonstrate the effectiveness of inpatient psychosomatic treatment, clinical observation and empirical evidence demonstrate that not all patients benefit equally from established therapeutic methods. Especially patients with a comorbid personality disorder often show reduced therapeutic success compared to other patient groups. Due to the heterogeneous and categorical personality assessment, previous studies indicated no uniform direction of this influence.

Background: Preserving residual hearing after cochlear implant (CI) surgery remains a crucial challenge. The application of dexamethasone (DEX) has been proven to positively affect residual hearing. To deliver DEX in a localized and controlled way, a round window niche implant (RNI), allowing drug diffusion via the round window membrane into the cochlea, may be used.

Metals play a crucial role in the human body, especially as ions in metalloproteins. Essential metals, such as calcium, iron, and zinc are crucial for various physiological functions, but their interactions within biological networks are complex and not fully understood. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are essential for tissue regeneration due to their ability to differentiate into various cell types.
