Intravenous thrombolysis for ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objectives: Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is recommended in patients with ischemic stroke in the anterior and posterior circulation. Neurological outcomes due to posterior circulation strokes (PCS) without treatment remain poor. Our aim was to overview the literature on outcomes of IVT and conservative treatment in PCS, based on a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Assisting the implementation of screening for type 1 diabetes by using artificial intelligence on publicly available data.

The type 1 diabetes community is coalescing around the benefits and advantages of early screening for disease risk. To be accepted by healthcare providers, regulatory authorities and payers, screening programmes need to show that the testing variables allow accurate risk prediction and that individualised risk-informed monitoring plans are established, as well as operational feasibility, cost-effectiveness and acceptance at population level. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to contribute to solving these issues, starting with the identification and stratification of at-risk individuals.

Current spectrum and outcomes of infarct-related cardiogenic shock: insights from the CULPRIT-SHOCK registry and randomized controlled trial.

Aims: We analysed consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock (CS) who were enrolled into the CULPRIT-SHOCK randomized controlled trial (RCT) and those with exclusion criteria who were included into the accompanying registry.

Methods And Results: In total, 1075 patients with infarct-related CS were screened for CULPRIT-SHOCK in 83 specialized centres in Europe; 369 of them had exclusion criteria for the RCT and were enrolled into the registry. Patients were followed over 1 year.

Cardiovascular health and rate of cognitive decline in preclinical dementia: A 12-year population-based study.

Objective: We investigated whether vascular risk factors (VRFs), assessed with Life's Simple 7 (LS7), are associated with the rate of cognitive decline in the years preceding a dementia diagnosis.

Method: This study included 1,449 stroke-free participants aged ≥60 years from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen, who underwent repeated neuropsychological testing (episodic memory, semantic memory, verbal fluency, perceptual speed) across 12 years. The LS7 score, assessed at baseline, included smoking, diet, physical activity, body mass index, plasma glucose, total cholesterol, and blood pressure.

Objectives: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is linked to systemic inflammatory responses and oxidative stress. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an antioxidant enzyme with a cardioprotective role whose activity is decreased in systemic inflammation and in patients with acute myocardial and global ischemia. Glucocorticoids counteract the effect of oxidative stress by upregulating PON1 gene expression.

Electrochemotherapy combined with immunotherapy - a promising potential in the treatment of cancer.

Electrochemotherapy is a novel, locoregional therapy that is used to treat cutaneous and deep-seated tumors. The electric pulses used in electrochemotherapy increase the permeability of the cell membranes of the target lesion and thus enhance the delivery of low-permeant cytotoxic drugs to the cells, leading to their death. It has also been postulated that electrochemotherapy acts as an vaccination by inducing immunogenic cell death.

Dental silicate ceramics surface modification by nonthermal plasma: A systematic review.

Objectives: Nonthermal atmospheric or low-pressure plasma (NTP) can improve the surface characteristics of dental materials without affecting their bulk properties. This study aimed to systematically review the available scientific evidence on the effectiveness of using NTP for the surface treatment of etchable, silica-based dental ceramics before cementation, and elucidate its potential to replace the hazardous and technically demanding protocol of hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching.

Introduction: Several techniques have been employed for defect reconstruction after total laryngectomy, among others sliding epiglottoplasty. As there is a paucity of data on sliding epiglottoplasty after total laryngectomy, this study aimed to present this reconstruction technique in detail with the retrospective analysis of the patients.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed single-center medical records of patients who underwent pharyngeal reconstruction after total laryngectomy between 2007-2013, with a follow-up to 2020.

Evaluation of Optical Genome Mapping in Clinical Genetic Testing of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is the third most common hereditary muscular dystrophy, caused by the contraction of the D4Z4 repeats on the permissive 4qA haplotype on chromosome 4, resulting in the faulty expression of the gene. Traditional diagnostics are based on Southern blotting, a time- and effort-intensive method that can be affected by single nucleotide variants (SNV) and copy number variants (CNV), as well as by the similarity of the D4Z4 repeats located on chromosome 10. We aimed to evaluate optical genome mapping (OGM) as an alternative molecular diagnostic method for the detection of FSHD.

Efficacy of alitretinoin in the treatment of Darier disease: a case report.

Darier disease is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis that initially first presents in adolescence with scaly reddish brown keratotic papules and plaques with a seborrheic and intertriginous distribution. The absence of specific targeted medications complicates the treatment process, and managing resistant cases can prove challenging due to recurrent exacerbations that may result in serious complications such as secondary bacterial and viral infections. Treatments of choice include antiseptics, topical corticosteroids, and systemic retinoids, mainly acitretin and isotretinoin.

Perception of genomic newborn screening among peripartum mothers.

Advances in genomic technology have generated possibilities for expanding newborn screening from traditional procedures to genomic newborn screening (gNBS). However, before the implementation of gNBS, it is crucial to address various aspects, including parental attitudes, at the national level. With this aim, we analyzed the attitudes and expectations of Slovenian peripartum mothers regarding gNBS and the acceptability of its implementation into the Slovenian health system.
