Background: Sigh breaths may impact outcomes in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) during assisted mechanical ventilation. We investigated whether sigh breaths may impact mortality in predefined subgroups of patients enrolled in the PROTECTION multicenter clinical trial according to: 1.the physiological response in oxygenation to Sigh (responders versus non-responders) and 2.

Oxidative stress resulting from a disturbance of the endogenous redox system is suspected in numerous diseases of the central nervous system, including epilepsy. In addition, antiseizure medications (ASMs), especially those of the old generation, may further increase oxidative stress. To evaluate the effects of ASM generation on oxidative stress, we conducted a cross-sectional study in patients with epilepsy treated with old, new, and polytherapy.

: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and survival is a pressing matter all around the world. Despite years of research and great strides and advancements, survival remains alarmingly low. The aim of this study was to measure the survival and characteristics of patients having an OHCA in Slovenia, with an in-depth look at how the bystanders affect the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and survival of OHCA.

Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) changed stroke prevention and decreased the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic complications in patients on oral anticoagulation (OAC) therapy. The numbers of patients prescribed DOACs has increased rapidly. Availability of specific reversal agents opened new avenues in the prevention and management of DOAC complications.

Background: Postinfectious Lyme arthritis (LA) is associated with dysregulated immunity and autoreactive T- and B-cell responses in joints. Here we explored the role of host genetic variation in this outcome.
Methods: The frequency of 253 702 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was determined in 147 patients with LA (87 with postinfectious LA and 60 with antibiotic-responsive LA), and for comparison in 90 patients with erythema migrans or the general population (n = 2504).

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are not recommended during the second and third trimester because of the significant risk of congenital anomalies associated with their use. However, data are scarce, especially regarding their use in the first trimester and about the impact of stopping just before pregnancy. Our study illustrates the profile of the women who used ACE-Is or ARBs during pregnancy and evaluates the impact on perinatal outcomes.

Mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment after perinatal stroke could be explained through brain network alterations. With aim to explore this connection, we conducted a matched test-control study to find a correlation between functional brain network properties and cognitive functions in children after perinatal stroke. First, we analyzed resting-state functional connectomes in the alpha frequency band from a 64-channel resting state EEG in 24 children with a history of perinatal stroke (12 with neonatal arterial ischemic stroke and 12 with neonatal hemorrhagic stroke) and compared them to the functional connectomes of 24 healthy controls.

Background: Significant improvement in neonatal care has enabled increasing survival of preterm infants. Metabolic bone disease of prematurity is often overlooked due to other comorbidities of preterm birth. The best approach is screening and prevention of the disease in high-risk infants such as preterm infants.

Introduction/aims: Diagnostic criteria for multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) and multifocal acquired demyelinating sensorimotor neuropathy (MADSAM) require the involvement of at least two peripheral nerves. However, many patients with very similar features have clinical involvement of only a single peripheral nerve, which may preclude their correct diagnosis and treatment. The present study aimed to present a cohort of such patients and discuss the role of ultrasonography (US) in their diagnosis.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) and about 20% of symptomatic patients with LEAD have DM. In subjects with DM, LEAD is a cause of morbidity and mortality. DM typically causes complications in the form of macro- and microangiopathy.

Obesity, primarily characterized by excessive fat accumulation, is a multifactorial chronic disease with an increasing global prevalence. Despite the well-documented epidemiology and significant advances in understanding its pathophysiology and clinical implications, the impact of sex is typically overlooked in obesity research. Worldwide, women have a higher likelihood to become obese compared to men.
