How control modulates pain.

Trends Cogn Sci

January 2025

Department of Systems Neuroscience, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, 20246 Hamburg, Germany.

Pain, an indicator of potential tissue damage, ideally falls under individual control. Although previous work shows a trend towards reduced pain in contexts where pain is controllable, there is a large variability across studies that is probably related to different aspects of control. We therefore outline a taxonomy of different aspects of control relevant to pain, sketch how control over pain can be integrated into a Bayesian pain model, and suggest changes in expectations and their precision as potential mechanisms.

Background: In DanGer Shock (the Danish-German Cardiogenic Shock trial), use of a microaxial flow pump (mAFP) in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock led to lower all-cause mortality but higher rates of renal replacement therapy (RRT). In this prespecified analysis, rates and predictors of acute kidney injury (AKI) and RRT were assessed.

Methods: In this international, randomized, open-label, multicenter trial, 355 adult patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock were randomized to mAFP (n=179) or standard care alone (n=176).

Patient-specific diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are important in the care of people with chronic wounds. The heterogeneity of underlying disease profiles and the diversity of the wound micro-environment make generalized approaches difficult. While high-throughput molecular diagnostic methods are increasingly widespread and available, the analysis of objective biomolecular disease patterns has not found its way into everyday wound management.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by inattention and impulsivity, linked to disruptions in functional brain connectivity and structural alterations in large-scale brain networks. Although sensory pathway anomalies have been implicated in ADHD, the exploration of sensory integration regions remains limited. In this study, we adopted an exploratory approach to investigate the connectivity profile of auditory-visual integration networks (AVIN) in children with ADHD and neurotypical controls using the ADHD-200 rs-fMRI dataset.

Establishing a strategy for sequencing of T cell-redirecting therapies for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) is a pressing clinical need. We longitudinally tracked the clinical and immunologic impact of bispecific T cell-engaging antibodies (BsAb) as bridging therapy (BT) to subsequent B-cell maturation antigen-directed chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapies in 52 patients with RRMM. BsAbs were a potent and safe option for BT, achieving the highest overall response rate (100%) to BT compared with chemotherapy, anti-CD38, or anti-SLAMF7 antibody-based regimens (46%).
