Although the etiological relevance of the detection of microsporidia in human stool samples remains uncertain, the immunological status of patients has been posited as an important determinant of potential clinical impact of these parasites. To further assess the interplay between the epidemiology of microsporidia and immunological markers, we conducted a study utilizing real-time PCR targeting , , , and , combined in a single fluorescence channel. The study involved a cohort of 595 clinically and immunologically well-characterized Ghanaian HIV patients, alongside 82 HIV-negative control individuals from Ghana.

Rotaviruses, non-enveloped viruses with a double-stranded RNA genome, are the leading etiological pathogen of acute gastroenteritis in young children and animals. The P[11] genotype of rotaviruses exhibits a tropism for neonates. In the present study, a binding assay using synthetic oligosaccharides demonstrated that the VP8* protein of P[11] porcine rotavirus (PRV) strain 4555 binds to lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT) with the sequence Galβ1,4-GlcNAcβ1,3-Galβ1,4-Glc, one of the core parts of histo-blood group antigen (HBGA) and milk glycans.

Objectives: A core outcome set (COS) giving indicators of the quality of the process for minimally invasive valve surgery embedded into enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols should be developed.
Methods: Using web-based questionnaires, a Delphi process with three rounds was conducted from January to December 2022. Prior to the rounds, a systematic database search was performed identifying potential quality parameters.

Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized melanoma treatment, yet approximately half of patients do not respond to these therapies. Identifying prognostic biomarkers is crucial for treatment decisions. Our retrospective study assessed liquid biopsies and tumor tissue analyses for two potential biomarkers: danger-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) S100A8/A9 and its source, neutrophils.

Background: Although some evidence suggests that alcohol, substance use, and mental health issues diminish adherence to HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) among gay, bisexual, and other men-who-have-sex-with-men (gbMSM), findings are somewhat inconsistent and have primarily derived from studies involving non-random samples. Medical chart extraction can provide unique insight by in part surmounting sampling-related limitations, as data for entire PrEP clinic populations can be examined. Our investigation entailed comprehensive chart extraction to assess the extent to which chart-reported alcohol, substance use, and mental health issues were associated with chart-reported PrEP nonadherence.

Aim was to investigate to what extent cognitive functioning differs by three socioeconomic conditions: low income, being without employment, and living alone. A total of N = 158,144 participants of the population-based German National Cohort (NAKO) provided data on socioeconomic conditions and completed cognitive tests. Multivariable confounder-adjusted regression analyses indicated that cognitive functioning was lower in those with low income (b = -0.

Major diagnostic and therapeutic changes led to the implementation of the 'lung cancer diagnosis in small biopsies and cytology specimens' concept in the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Lung, Pleura, Thymus and Heart in 2015. Touch imprints are an established technique in cytology that provides a rapid and minimally invasive method for morphological diagnoses of clinical specimens, accurate subtyping, and molecular characterizations of malignancies. The extended diagnostic requirements from the increasingly limited material provided by minimally invasive biopsy techniques pose major challenges for pathology.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and trajectory of persistent symptoms following COVID-19 and to investigate factors influencing these among employees in the health and welfare services in Germany.
Methods: This exploratory, mixed retro- and prospective cohort study using paper-and-pencil questionnaires was conducted among insured persons of the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the health and welfare services with a SARS-CoV-2 infection in 2020. The baseline survey in February 2021 was succeeded by two follow-up surveys after 8 and 13 months.

Background: Healthcare and social workers had an increased occupational risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 during the pandemic. Some developed long-lasting symptoms known as post-COVID syndrome (PCS). To assess the consequences of COVID-19 for individuals insured by the German Social Accident Insurance, the BG hospitals (Berufsgenossenschaftliche Kliniken: clinics for occupational accident insurance) established an interdisciplinary diagnostic programme.

Background: Children under five continue to bear a disproportionate burden of malaria morbidity and mortality in endemic countries. While the link between socioeconomic position (SEP) and malaria is well established, the causal pathways remain poorly understood, hindering the design and implementation of more targeted structural interventions. This study examines the association between SEP and malaria among children in Ghana and explores the potential mediating role of behavioural and socio-structural factors.

Background: Cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized melanoma treatment, but the high number of non-responders still emphasizes the need for improvement of therapy. One potential avenue for enhancing anti-tumor treatment is through the modulation of coagulation and platelet activity. Both have been found to play an important role in the tumor microenvironment, tumor growth and metastasis.

Purpose: Targeted treatment and immunotherapy, both adjuvant treatment options, come with a certain toxicity and can cause severe side effects. To date, data about the underlying reasons for patients to accept or reject specific types of adjuvant therapy is scarce. Therefore, this study investigates the motives of melanoma patients for tolerating or rejecting adjuvant therapy and its side effects.

Dynamic structural biology enables studying biological events at the atomic scale from 10's of femtoseconds to a few seconds duration. With the advent of X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) and 4th generation synchrotrons, serial crystallography is becoming a major player for time-resolved experiments in structural biology. Despite significant progress, challenges such as obtaining sufficient amounts of protein to produce homogeneous microcrystal slurry, remain.

Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in naturalistic behaviour and in machine learning tools for automatically tracking it. However, questions about what to measure, how to measure it, and how to relate naturalistic behaviour to neural activity and cognitive processes remain unresolved. In this Perspective, we propose a general experimental and computational framework - kinematic coding - for measuring how information about cognitive states is encoded in structured patterns of behaviour and how this information is read out by others during social interactions.

Human atrial myocytes afford an attractive experimental model to investigate mechanisms underlying electrophysiological alterations in cardiovascular disease. However, this model presents limitations, such as the availability of human atrial tissue and a variable yield of myocytes isolation. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether overnight storage can increase the time window where the electrophysiological properties of human atrial myocytes can be determined.
