Background: Clinical guidelines advise osimertinib as preferred first line treatment for advanced epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with deletions in exon 19 (del19) or exon 21 L858R mutation. However, for first-line osimertinib the real world overall survival (OS) in mutation subgroups remains unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the real-world OS of those patients treated with different generations of EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), and to identify predictors of survival.

Differences in IgG autoantibody Fab glycosylation across autoimmune diseases.

J Allergy Clin Immunol

June 2023

Department of Immunopathology, Landsteiner Laboratory, Amsterdam University Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Increased Fab glycosylation of autoantibodies is prevalent in chronic B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases, with varying levels found across several conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • Assessment methods included lectin affinity chromatography and autoantigen-specific immunoassays to determine glycosylation levels.
  • The study demonstrated that chronic disease states lead to increased Fab glycosylation, while acute autoimmune diseases did not show this association, suggesting a complex relationship between autoantigen exposure and glycosylation.

Background: The closure of extensive burn wounds with widely expanded autologous split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) is associated with undesirable scar formation and contraction, due to the lack of dermis. Various materials for dermal replacement have been developed, either of xenogeneic, allogeneic or synthetic origin and are placed in the wound underneath a thin STSG in order to improve scar quality. In this study, a porcine wound model was used to compare several commercially available acellular dermal substitutes with an acellular dermal substitute prepared from glycerol preserved human skin: Glyaderm.

Background: We designed a new multi-modal version of the MSmonitor, called the MSmonitor-Plus and Video calling Care (MPVC), a self-management and education program with e-health interventions that combines frequent use of specific questionnaires with video calling in treating multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and feasibility of MPVC compared to care as usual (CAU), with the goal of achieving equal or better quality of life for MS patients and their partners/informal caregivers. Our hypothesis is that by using MPVC, monitoring will become more efficient, that patients' self-efficacy, quality of life, and adherence to treatment will improve, and that they will be able to live their lives more autonomously.

Although guidelines recommend a kidney biopsy in prospective living kidney donors with unexplained microscopic hematuria, individuals with mild hematuria are commonly allowed to donate without a biopsy. However, the prognostic implications of pre-donation hematuria are unclear. We investigated whether pre-donation microscopic hematuria is associated with changes in post-donation eGFR, proteinuria, or blood pressure.

Avian influenza H7N9 virus has first emerged in 2013 and since then has spread in China in five seasonal waves. In humans, influenza H7N9 virus infection is associated with a high fatality rate; thus, an effective vaccine for this virus is needed. In the present study, we evaluated the usefulness of dissolving microneedles (MNs) loaded with influenza H7N9 vaccine in terms of the dissolution time, insertion capacity, insertion depth, and structural integrity of H7N9 virus in vitro.

Article Synopsis
  • Dupuytren's disease is a fibrotic condition leading to irreversible finger flexion and lacks approved treatments for early-stage cases; a study identified tumor necrosis factor as a potential target, finding that 40 mg adalimumab was most effective.
  • In a phase 2b trial, adults with early-stage Dupuytren's disease received either adalimumab or saline injections every three months, with nodule hardness as the primary outcome measured after 12 months.
  • The results showed that adalimumab significantly lowered nodule hardness compared to saline, with no serious side effects reported, indicating it may soften and reduce the size of the nodules in early-stage patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - Elderly kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) face significant COVID-19-related risks, with low vaccination responses that underscore the need for improved strategies.
  • - The OPTIMIZE trial tested two immunosuppressive regimens: one standard and one adapted with everolimus, finding that KTRs on the everolimus regimen had significantly higher seroconversion rates after COVID-19 vaccinations.
  • - Results indicate that an adjusted regimen without mycophenolate mofetil and reduced CNI dosage enhances vaccine response in elderly KTRs, suggesting a need for further studies in broader transplant populations.

Arginine (Arg) and lysine (Lys) moieties of proteins undergo various post-translational modifications (PTM) including enzymatic N- and N-methylation and non-enzymatic N- and N-glycation. In a large cohort of stable kidney transplant recipients (KTR, n = 686), high plasma and low urinary concentrations of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an abundant PTM metabolite of Arg, were associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Thus, the prediction of the same biomarker regarding mortality may depend on the biological sample.
